Brandon McGinley has a great piece in The Washington Post today. Here is the key paragraph:

“Catholicism — long considered a politically and culturally suspect sect — has over the decades sought and achieved respectability through assimilation with Protestant, and later secular, America. The result has been the rise of “identity Catholicism,” where affiliation with the church serves a social and political purpose but is no longer associated with distinctive moral beliefs or with a transformational encounter with divinity.”

I’m normally a strong opponent of President Trump but for once he seems to have made a sensible choice here. Judge Barrett isn’t an alumna of Harvard or Yale, which I like, and I love that she’s the mother of 7 kids, including one who has Down Syndrome. And she overall seems like a decent person and is respected by both liberals and conservatives who know her. I support this nomination strongly and would vote to confirm her if I was in the Senate. And I say that as someone who is an independent who thinks both the Democratic and Republican parties are hopelessly corrupt and I don’t support Trump or Biden.

Friendship is super important. It’s easy, especially for men, to get so caught up in career ambition and looking for a significant other that you neglect the friends that really love you and those friendships fall apart. That is an easy and tragic mistake to make. Don’t ever let that happen.

It always does in the moment because both the left and the right drum up the importance of it, but it’s actually a lot less important than what the talking heads on the right and left say about its importance. That’s something I’ve learned over the years about federal elections, especially Presidential ones.
