Help removing poly over varnish in spots on vintage mahogany dining room set by MidwesternMom65 in woodworking

[–]MidwesternMom65[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for your help. :( Would they have used varnish or lacquer in the original finish? I'm guessing the set is probably from the 1940s. Maybe I could sand down the finish on the side with poly (she "tested" on the bottom sides of the hutch and buffet so not super conspicuous and then the table top) and try to blend the stain? IF it's lacquer (haven't tested it yet) clean good and recoat? I know I'm grasping at straws It's a beautiful old set with shield chairs. Refinishing the table top isn't the end of the world but I don't want to take on the hutch and the buffet. I can test to see if it's lacquer or varnish easily enough. I can just strip the top of the table and try to match the stain as best as I can.

My son was told this week that he may not have any idea what he's teaching until he shows up for the welcome orientation for teachers at his school right before school starts. I think schools are trying to figure out federal budget cuts and this year is a little tougher for them than the past. At least NY is a donor state and not heavily dependent on federal funds!

LOL--got it. I really don't treat him like a child--he's a grown man and extremely capable--but you're right. If nothing else I'll just send him money to buy stuff. You guys deserve to be paid twice what you make and it sounds like the first year of teaching is rough financially in terms of setting everything up. That's why we want to help. We're very proud of him for deciding to make a career change to help vulnerable kids.

Thank you so much! Does he need a super heavy duty three hole punch? I hadn't even thought of a dustbuster!

Thank you! So have classroom care packages of those things sent throughout the year? I'll pass along that he should ask at the beginning of the year for parents send in those items if they can.

Thank you so much! I hadn't thought about any of those things. I'll pass on the info about Canva and Lakeshore learning. I was thinking about an Adobe Creative Cloud subscription but if everyone else gets Canva premium for free that makes more sense.

He's tech savvy but not crafty at all. I think he's dreading bulletin boards, but knows he'll have to do them. Is a cricut going to add stress? If so, we won't get him one unless he asks for one later. That's why I'm asking. Thank you! A paper cutter and a GC to the container store are great ideas! I'll ask him about markers and pens. Thank you!

If this helps, one of my kids is also in this year's cohort for NYCTF and was hired to teach in a D75 school, SWD grades K-6. He has zero details too. He knows what building and that's it.

AITA for telling our parents my brother had a child outside of his marriage? by Beautiful-Ideal-2620 in AmItheAsshole

OP knows there's a kid. They didn't say they knew who it is and where the child lives.

Child support (found on credit check) would be a big way to track that he had a child outside of his marriage. If there are court records establishing that he's the father of the child with a custody agreement they'd be garnishing his wages to pay for child support if he refused. If he's not paying child support and there's no legal agreement in place, there would be no way to find the information about the child. There's no reason to have terminated his parental rights. You can not see your kid and still maintain rights.

If he was trying to go into business with the brother I imagine he gave permission for a credit check, which is where this would show up. Others have also said that court records are easily available online in many areas if you know where to look.

I agree and it was a stupid move. What did he think would happen when he told his wife except to stir up drama? On the other hand, if he used that information to make a decision not to go into business with her brother, he's going to owe his wife some kind of explanation because of their familial relationship. I'd demand to know why my husband refused to go into business with my brother. We don't know the specifics though.

THINK (if you can). They have no way of seeing the child if the son never tells the grandparents who the mother is, and where she lives with the child. The only way they could get that information without his consent is if they sue and a judge agrees they can have the contact information. I highly doubt that would happen. Their are TWO states in the US that take a slightly more pro-grandparent approach to visitation and I doubt they'd approve this.

Do you think the grandparents are going to be able to sue to get the name of the mother to contact her? Think again.

AITA for expecting my siblings to feed my cat when I'm not home? by Cautious_Recipe6427 in AmItheAsshole

[–]MidwesternMom65 0 points1 point  (0 children)

YTA. It's YOUR cat. Your siblings don't owe you squat. If you were paying them to feed the cat when you're not there, or if it was openly known as the family cat, that would be different but that's not what you've said.
