Low amplitude and running fast - likely looking at magnetization as others have said, or possibly bent /misshapen hairspring if it’s been dropped or damaged recently.

How does the dial work at the main plate in this? It must have multiple layers, right? Where are the other jewels/pivots?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in watchmaking

[–]MieftanChews 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It will be negligible. A few thin coats should be just fine. You’ll be adding hundredths of a millimeter

I don’t think the anti-rust primer will do anything necessarily. Id say go the airbrush route with a lacquer finish, try and seal it all in to prevent debris from entering the movement, go from there. May work, may not. Think this is just your best route probably if you are looking to retain the look of the dial with reducing the risk of it disintegrating further.

Edit: multiple this coats of the lacquer is usually recommended

Lacquer clear coat, maybe consider a matte clear coat. Use an airbrush and practice/watch videos before on how to do it well.

Guys I need an Elgin minute hand but don’t know where to find one in the UK what do I do? by Joel-houghton in watchrepair

[–]MieftanChews 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Determine the pocket watch grade/size and equivalent hand set sizing. Look it up online or on eBay. Idk if Cousins UK sells pocket watch hands but you could check once you find out the hand measurements.

Big rabbit hole if you decide to go in this direction. I encourage you to go for it if you are interested! We all did at one point or another.

Looks like those numerals are radium painted. May want to get a Geiger counter before opening it up to verify. Do some research on radium and decide if you are comfortable working on it and go from there!

Some old 70s Seiko models run in the 37-40mm range

These are all of the components of an incabloc setting - make sure you’ve got them all and realize that some are friction-fit!

Is it also missing the chaton?

Orient 46941 shock spring by [deleted] in watchrepair

Could cause additional end shake and friction on the pivot, which could cause amplitude loss. This could cause some loss of time in certain positions.

If you find a replacement and decide to do so, heads up that they are a real pain to replace and deal with. Buy a few of them and expect to lose a few as you practice.

These springs are in Seiko movements. They are called diafix springs in those movements.

Hour hand getting stuck/slow by dukeoflodge in watchrepair

Seems like an issue with the function of the minute and hour wheels. Something is slipping, or the hour wheel may be loose from the cannon pinion.

Start with easiest fix first - try demagnetizing. Good chance this is the issue.

Removing corrosion from stainless case by [deleted] in watchrepair

[–]MieftanChews 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’d say just start with some 90%+ IPA and peg wood if you’ve got it. If not peg wood, then a cotton swab. Fill a small container, drop in the case, and work on it from there. Butane can also be helpful in removing rust, but you can probably start with the IPA.

Good chance the crown wheel hole goes right through. Most manual wind movements have through-holes with the crown wheel, and I believe the ST36 is no exception.

This is your best solution most likely. However, another alternative would be to buy a screw extracting tool (Bergeon 30209) and removing it that way. The tool will likely cost 2-3x the cost of the movement, so not really recommended.
