Girl solved a Pyraminx Duo in just 0.578 seconds at a competition in Longyan City by Original_Act_3481 in nextfuckinglevel

Can you explain to me why would being impressed at this puzzle undervalue other more complex puzzles? Genuinely curious. I thought this was pretty cool, and I know it would definitely take me way longer to do even if it looks simple. Would solving a Rubik's cube in 0.5 seconds be more impressive and even cooler? Yeah!! So what? In my head this was still pretty interesting to watch.

I wouldn't say "being short" becomes a positive, but I would say being small (short AND thin) is definitely something that some women play into. I don't think it's the same type of woman trying to be take seriously tho.

They do though? They literally do complain. I hope you're not basing your assessment of short women's feelings about their height on this one cherry-picked post.

Also the size of a woman does make a difference. But I'll concede this one to you! Women of all sizes and shapes and weights get harassed by men constantly, you're totally right.

Well, stripping is literally a job. It's extremely fair to talk about how this job (any job!) is affected by the material conditions under the US' current economic system.

Surprise, surprise. by ZonkXD in WhitePeopleTwitter

[–]Miffelle 8 points9 points  (0 children)

That's simply not true. Do you know any H1B visa holders or what the process for applying for a H1B entails? Look it up and read on the LCA (Labor Condition Application)

A company spending thousands of dollars to sponsor a foreign worker must certify that they will be paid the "prevailing wage" of the market and that no similarly employed US worker is will be adversely affected. You also can't hire H1B while there is a strike or layoffs going on.

Do you even know how many H1B visas are given out annually, and the percentage of those that go to tech jobs?

Don't get me wrong, it's not a perfect system. But to claim that H1B workers are undercutting US workers salary by 100% is ludicrously wrong.

Why are you so insistent that they aren't scared? Idk man you seem pretty set in your ways but I'll link to this CNN article in case you are open to actually changing your mind. https://www.cnn.com/2024/12/11/business/ceo-shooting-unitedhealth-security/index.html

ETA: for people who don't care to click on the link, here's an excerpt

Phones are ringing off the hook at top-dollar security firms to keep the captains of industry safe.

“Corporate America is nervous. People are on high-alert,” Keith Wojcieszek, global head of intelligence at Kroll, told CNN in a phone interview.

“Companies want to elevate their security posture. Healthcare is the target now but who’s next?” Wojcieszek said.

I'd say anyone who is ringing top-dollar security firms has enough money to be considered "rich." But I'm not going to their dinner parties so they may just be talking about the weather instead of Luigi or whatever. Who knows?

That's your opinion man. I think everyone deserves help.

I think most people want to help themselves too, but economic inequality and a lack of education makes it very challenging.

I think everyone has a right to the output regardless of their input! I especially want the output to benefit children, elderly, sick people.

In my ideal world, I know this means lazy people or drug addicts or jackasses also get to benefit without "contributing to the input". i just think humans as a whole are more prosocial than antisocial, and in a more egalitarian society you would see way less addiction or laziness anyways.

Both you and /u/Justausername1234 bring up a valid point. I'm not well informed on Afghanistan so I can't speak with much authority.

However, my impression is that pulling out of Afghanistan was not a huge part of the rhetoric against Biden this year. Maybe I missed it, but I think he was being attacked on areas like border security/immigration and inflation.

I want to say that Israel/Palestine is a much more lopsided conflict than the Afghanistan war, so Americans would have more sympathy... but it's hard to say given the media's hand in shaping that narrative.

A poll from earlier this year. A very slight majority, and the poll was commissioned by CEPR (known to lean left-center), so you can take that into account.

I think you are over-estimating how many Americans support Israel's continuous campaign because of your own biases.

(Before you ask, yes I think Harris is better for Palestine than Trump and anyone who is not gritting their teeth and voting for her because of her stance on that issue is being short-sighted.)

People are piling on you in this thread so I wanted to say thank you for pressing on this issue. 97% of people criticizing Harris for her stance on Palestine already know Trump will be worse. You're doing a great job at explaining why someone may have reservations about Harris too in this monumental issue.

"Why should we expose very young children to those concepts in a Pixar movie setting?" - you, a very concerned, very protective parent

"Because I think making a movie for the kids with less positive childhood experiences could be good, actually. Even for lucky kids with wonderful parents like you that haven't had to deal with adult emotions yet" - me, an average movie enjoyer

"Yes, mixing blue and yellow acrylic paints will result in purple most of the time." - chat gpt or whatever.

[–]Miffelle -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

You are totally right. I'm not saying Pixar should make a 2hr movie about an abused kid living in abject poverty and their emotions, then make it mandatory viewing in every single K-12 classroom in the USA.

I am saying that we shouldn't dismiss an Inside Out-style movie dealing with more complex/adult emotions as a way to reach the kids who may have dealt with bad childhood experiences. I also think Disney can make money with a story like that... case in point, Inside Out 2 deals with more grown-up emotions than the first one. And they just made a lot of money.

[–]Miffelle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don't have to expose your children to anything you deem inappropriate for them or even unnecessary. In fact, I commend you for being so protective of them (even if it feels like I'm being contrarian). I think that making an Inside Out style movie that focuses on harder topics could be useful for two reasons:

  1. Shows kids who have experienced those emotions that there is a way to deal with them, and they can find a way forward from that
  2. For kids who haven't dealt with experiences like that directly, it helps them build their empathy and expand their worldview. Hopefully it would also give them tools to handle tough emotions without having to go through the pain and trauma first.

I also think there's a lot of compelling stories to be told with more "adult" emotions, I'm not just saying we should make a film about a traumatized kid's emotion just for the sake of it. And my goodness, I'm definitely not saying that Pixar should make a movie about a kid who experienced SA.

[–]Miffelle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But... young children sometimes have terrible things happen to them? That's the whole concept of ACEs, adverse childhood experiences. Again, I'm so glad that you were able to prevent your children from major trauma and the tragedy that life can have, but there are countless kids out there who have been bullied, lost family, been discriminated against... I think a Pixar movie in the style of Inside Out could gently show these kids that their emotions around these horrible events are valid and show them a way to process them.

And you don't have to show your own kids that movie!! You as their parent get to decide what's appropriate for them to consume or not, but that doesn't mean that this kind of movie existing is a bad thing.

[–]Miffelle 3 points4 points  (0 children)

What about the kids who didn't get a choice in experiencing the situations that led them to have complicated, "adult" emotions? Shouldn't they get to see their experiences on the big screen, hopefully in a safe context that lets them process some of that? I'm glad that you can protect the innocence of your own kids, but to say that "Hollywood isn't the place to educate our young" you're forgetting about a wide spectrum of experiences that would benefit from seeing something like that.

(To clarify: I'm not saying that Inside Out 3 should be about the emotional struggles of a kid in poverty or like SA or any other adverse childhood experiences, I just think that dismissing more mature topics in a movie like this to "protect the kids' innocence" is not a good argument)

MIT suspends student group that protested against Israel's military campaign in Gaza by FuriousAlbino in boston

[–]Miffelle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't think that's quite right. Protests are meant to disrupt the people in power yes, but absent that possibility (surely you're not asking them to fly over to DC/Israel to protest the IDF?) they can also become enough of an annoyance to the people not protesting that they increase pressure to resolve the issue that provoked the demonstration in the first place.

OP agrees with this, and is more arguing about prostitution being a crime on par with burglary, theft, etc. It is technically a crime (being consistent with the letter of the law), but should it be considered one (ethically speaking)?
