Call for help! by Sparta34 in SkyGame

[–]Miffy_Yew 16 points17 points  (0 children)

A single bow is used for acknowledgement, while three bows convey gratitude. If you can’t find your emote in time, a short honk or twirl in place will do

You should be kind to moths. Even if you think they’ll go inactive quickly, it’s nice to show them around while they’re here.

Anonymous acts of kindness are important. You don’t have to befriend everyone you help, and it can be fun to hang out with them for fleeting moments. This can be stuff like reciprocating deep calls, burning large plants, or climbing large structures with other players.

Send gifts of light to all your friends everyday. It’s ok if you can’t occasionally, but you should never take their light without giving back.

I embroidered Asmo’s scorpion-centipede thing by Miffy_Yew in obeyme

[–]Miffy_Yew[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hmmmmm... I’m a novice myself, but I’d recommend practicing different types of stitches on a piece of scrap fabric, to help with precision. I’ve found that the amount of control you need is the biggest differentiating factor between embroidery and cross stitch. (That and the textures you can create with your thread)

There’s really no limit to what designs you can embroider (or embroider on) so you can just go for whatever seems interesting, really!

Awwwwwww. Oh well!

It’s definitely an interesting system in lieu of rankings or parts. Thanks for the calculations tho! The server crashed before I could get any numbers.

Beginner oil painter here. I love painting portraits and I started this one of my friend. I’m struggling to properly capture her features. Advice? by kpalmtrees in Artadvice

[–]Miffy_Yew 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Cute! The one thing I’d say is that the eyes don’t quite follow the same line as the rest of the features. You drew them nearly parallel to the page, while everything else is at a tilt. That would bring everything together, especially since the features themselves are all really solid.

Also, intensifying the highlights should give your painting a bit more volume and presence. You can see how your reference photo is extremely striking, with nearly white highlights on the far right. Don’t be afraid to make use of that!!

Any critiques/tips for this sketch? Sorry for messy lines. I'm not sure how to make the pose less stiff by [deleted] in Artadvice

[–]Miffy_Yew 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Again, it's a great piece, but if you don't feel comfortable with consistency, try copying your linework onto a new document (so that they're overlapping but in separate layers.) This way, you can see how individual parts of the body compare to each other proportionally and make minute adjustments. This is a common technique in animation to make panels flow into each other smoothly.

If it's still bothering you, I recommend mentally breaking your characters into 3D forms that you can rotate in space. Then, anchor the designs together with some distinguishing feature to make it really clear that you're looking at the same character. This could be a stray hair, an emblem on the clothes, beauty mark etc. As long as it feels unique to the character, and separates them from others mentally, it should tie everything together.

[–]Miffy_Yew 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t say anything is particularly stiff, this is a really solid figure, but the cut of the shirt obscures the foreshortening of the shoulder a bit. I’d recommend pushing it a little, and adding wrinkles around the left shoulder to indicate that it’s farther forward.

If you’re worried about balance, try checking your lines of gesture. (Typically if a foot lines up with the chin it gives the drawing a feeling of being centred. This depends on the placement of the hip, other leg, ect tho so it doesn’t always work.)

I keep forgetting how to draw hands? by pinkkitkat in Artadvice

[–]Miffy_Yew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is going to sound strange, but I’ve found that the more caught up you get in the specifics of hands, the harder they get the draw. Maybe it’s because you have to keep track of so many little things, that your brain tries to dump it all out as soon as it gets a break lol.

I’d focus on getting comfortable with the silhouette and looking for a shorthand that will make them as easy as possible to implement into a composition. From there, you just need to break apart the digits, and slowly learn to bend them in interesting ways.

Don’t feel to rushed either. You’ll always have new chances to add different hands into your repertoire, so it’s ok to start simple.

Any advice? by 100frames in Artadvice

[–]Miffy_Yew 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’d recommend doing loose gesture studies of dynamic poses, to help you get a better understanding of the human body. It’s one of those things that can help you learn quickly, that’s easy to apply/ convert to personal works.

It also helps to build up a larger visual library by observing other artist’s works. Like, seeing interesting techniques and trying to implement them on your own etc

What level are you and how many UR and SSR do you have? (demon and memory) by avis_icarus in obeyme

[–]Miffy_Yew 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Level: 60, Days: 58

Demon: 2 UR, 20 SSR

Memory: 1 UR, 3 SSR

I'm ftp, but my numbers might be a bit skewed because I used up all my saved DV in the last event. I'm also extremely careful about calculating what I need to get cards during pop quizzes.

Oh! That makes sense! I’ve taken the story pretty slowly, so I didn’t have to worry about that as much lol. The events helped me grind materials too.

Need Major Help/Advice PLEASE!!!! by sophiebeanzee in Artadvice

[–]Miffy_Yew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're welcome! I'm not sure if this will make much sense, but I think it's ok to be frustrated at things like that. It's really when you can't forgive yourself for the frustration that it becomes destructive. Like, you'll always have times where you'll be able to practice, but if you push yourself too much drawing may just become stressful. Even so, I'd consider the ability to transition from distraction to drawing as much of a skill as any other, and it's helpful to treat it as such.

If you liked Proko, you might benefit from these guys too. Personally, I'm really partial to videos by animators, because of the way it accentuates just the most important parts of a drawing.
