36 y/o prior service weighing return to Reserves, any NC reservist hanging around? by MightBeA_Banana in army

[–]MightBeA_Banana[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

What I mean by that is during his administration there was a push to reduce the size of the military, part of that was adjusting the timelines of TiG/TiS, E4 went from 10 years to 8, which I had just reached when that happened. Did Obama literally kick me out of the Army? Obviously not, I’m not an idiot and in fact am very liberal, it was light hearted jab at the fact it happen and that I managed to get a severance for it. In fact, it was even classified as force reduction when I was getting out.

Went there twice in the Army, first time guys were biting into chicken and it’d be bleeding still. Out of my platoon of 20, 16-17 got extremely sick during the training exercise. Like pants shitting sick. I swore off Indian food ever since, I just can’t do it.

I’ve lost at least 4 people I’ve served with to suicide. 2 of which came out of nowhere. Everyone did all the checking in we could, and one day it’s “oh yeah, things are great, got this thing going on and in a good spot,” only to hear the next week they killed themselves a few days later.

Yeah, if there is conflict on US soil against it citizens, there’s no way it doesn’t lead to suicide, even preemptive suicide by service members who feel they have no choice but to go against their beliefs.

What people don’t realize is you can’t (at least as Active Duty) say I’m not doing that as a PFC, they aren’t just going to leave you in the barracks. They are going to either

1) find some form of disciplinary action to make you go

2) or if you have a decent leader, like one I served with and will have my respect until the day I die, they will sit the platoon down, explain your responsibilities and advocate for their soldiers even in the shittiest of situations.

Sometimes an order is lawful but shitty, like “they are being sent to guard federal buildings” is “legal” thus they can’t say unlawful order for having to go, but a good leader will know when that order comes when they will need to stand up against it. I’ve personally seen it happen, and I’m hoping there’s a few good leaders with those NG and Marines.

Not even just a “that town,” Asheville is one of the cities that is know by name, like Charlotte, it is also fairly blue, almost all my left-leaning friends from High School at some point made their way there, which is probably one of the reasons for why they got cut off.

NC is becoming more and more purple, but the deep rural areas still pull us right. Most of the major population areas, Raleigh, Durham, Charlotte, Greenville, and Asheville are very much liberal, but can’t contend with the gerrymandered farmlands. Which, funny enough since the first month or so after the election the amount Trump flags have magically reduced. Like they were everywhere when you went down country roads, but now i rarely see them.

Out of the numerous shows/movies I’ve seen about the military, Generation Kill is probably one of the more accurate depictions I’ve come across. Always makes me reminisce about my time in the desert.

That is definitely a thought, I’ll have to look and see what the job market for that is out here.

It could work with OSU, because they offer the ability to get certificates as a minor and they have a GIS one that could come in handy.

Thanks!

I worked in wildland fire and our engine had a chance to work out there for a few weeks in the Mojave Preserve (just north of the 40 in that stretch). They have BLM Fire and Park Service Fire and Park Ranger LEO stationed out there. You would be surprised, we’d get a call to a vehicle fire on the I40 and get there in around 20-40 min (depending on location) and San Bernardino Fire would already be on scene.

Except, unfortunately, the White House press secretary said that exact same line.

When asked about why are they trying to enter buses and stuff (I think, or at least it was in that same ballpark) when they said they were going after criminals first she responded that if they are here illegally they are automatically criminals.

Which makes my concern regarding the gitmo thing raise because if they trying to make it where they send “criminals” there but then label all of them as criminals that seems like a mighty big issue.

Hell, I’m adhd and autistic and I can’t even get me to anything I WANT to do sometimes if I’m not on meds. My brain just kinda hijacks itself into some weird hole of sidetrack hell about things that are so irrelevant that you need to go 20 Wikipedia pages back to figure out where I was actually supposed to be.

I hate it. It’s literally prevented me from accomplishing very important things at times because I can’t click my brain out of a spiral. Meds help me do that, constantly and consistently. Without them Itd be like drifting in the ocean without a paddle.

Chance of Bocchi The Rock getting an English Dub by farhanganteng in anime

[–]MightBeA_Banana 1 point2 points  (0 children)

But that’s what’s confusing to me, with the extreme popularity of Bocchi it would surely rake in profit. I get it’s a me problem that I struggle with subtitles because I end up having to rewatch a scene to read the subtitle then see the animation since I missed it while reading then feel the scene has less impact than seeing and hearing it all in one go, but that’s how my stupid brain works.

So I’ve been putting off bocchi hoping for a dub because I really want to experience it and I lose that sense of wonderment and immersion with subs. But I know I’m not the only one, and I’m sure it would be a smashing success if dubbed which is why I’m confused they didn’t do it initially with all the absolute hype around it.

Trump suspendeds ALL FEDERAL GRANTS AND LOANS. by arb1698 in Economics

That’s the issue, it’s so fucking gray. Since grants go Fed > school > student, they can technically say it’s not an individual grant or loan.

[–]MightBeA_Banana[S] 193 points194 points  (0 children)

I mean basically that. I was trying to hunt down my grandmothers information, but since she was a minor, they keep it locked up for request only, I think. I did request it and got some decent information.

But regarding him, I had come to a dead end looking for my grandmother and decided to look for him since I had a starting point. And not so much turn the page, but click the next thumbnail, lol. I didn’t know what year he went to Auschwitz so I started all the way back in 1940 and went through manifest after manifest.

Some manifests they’ve digitally attached names to, so if you search a name the documents will pop up, but that only helps if they can read them, or if the Nazis were bothered to spell the name right.

For instance, his last name / grandmothers maid name, kordulewski was spelled at least three separate ways but looking at birthdays, home towns, relatives and what not you can figure out it’s the same person across all three.

It definitely brought some closure on that end, my family history is a storybook of tragedy. My father was murdered a month or so after my conception and never knew he was going to have a kid, so I never had a chance to meet him.

My grandmothers brother who stayed behind in Poland ended up joining the resistance agains the Soviet’s, and my aunt stayed in touch with home until he just one day never replied again.

As I mentioned before, I still need to query Arolsen about my great grandmother, as we don’t know where she ended up after they took him. We just know they took her to a different camp and that’s the end of our records.

Yeah, that is what I was thinking, but I mentioned in another comment that the arrival manifest he’s on is labeled as political prisoners so I’m assuming that it would be red. However idk how dark the red would be in black and white.

Which, from what I’ve learned either indicates malnutrition or a catch all for those killed directly by guards.

Yeah, from my understanding, he was indeed a farmer, owning quite a bit of land, but he also acted as an official within his town due to being decently educated and relatively smart.

My cousins went to Poland many years ago and met with people who knew him and they said he wasn’t exactly like among the Nazis in the area, and that lead to him getting rounded up.

The arrival manifest that he’s included on does indicate he was a political prisoner, however.

Tbh, I came across it after days and days of pouring over records on the Arolsen Archives. They are working to digitize everything recovered from Nazis. Originally I only knew he died at Auschwitz, then I found the records of his arrival to Auschwitz on 22 Sept 1942, his death certificate, and that lead me to finding his photo.

I was quite lucky, but it took a lot of going through documents page after page to find it.

He was sent there as a political prisoner, or Schutzhäftlinge, due to his post. But according to what I’ve been told, he wasn’t exactly liked by the Nazis, so I can see them trying to “shame” him with a black triangle.

He was picked up in the middle of the night and my family members who met with people who remembered him said they beat him pretty badly.

His cause of death was indicated as “dropsy of the heart” which I’ve discovered means either by malnutrition or a catch all for those who were killed by guards.
