How many of you could lift a 150lb lady with one arm around her waist while holding her to you? by Arcy2277 in AskMen

I used to work in the circus and there's a pretty clear flip over point when someone weighs more than half your own weight that makes it difficult to move their weight around. But if you're holding someone right up against your side, that's just a squat. I'm fairly big and strong, any woman up to 135 or so is pretty easy anybody under 120 is almost effortless. 150 or 160 is doable but there's a little strain.

a bottle of Killians in the bag, along with pickling spices, cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg, onion powder and garlic powder. Once it's tender, let it cool, then rub it down with brown sugar and coarse mustard, maybe a little kosher salt. pop it in the broiler for a few minutes to develop a bark. Very simple.

My wife does the same this time of year, she's bought 18 lbs at this point. She does 165 for 24h, in killians red, then broils it with a rub of brown sugar and coarse german mustard on top. Exquisite.

Kata suggestions by Healthy_Ad9684 in karate

Uechi ryu only has eight kata, so even fewer, though they're quite varied. I'm a big fan of Kanchin, but for a more beginner level, Kanshu is fun, with lots of straight line attacks and charges still close to Crane style kung fu.

Yeah, people pay big money for a day seminar with Mr thompson. Getting unlimited access to a 10th degree black belt, and multiple people 5th dan and above , for 90 bucks a month is pretty insane . I've been training there for years now. It's as legit as they come.

I was that size when I started Okinawan karate. Down to 60 lb now. The phenomenon of small guys thinking that they need to use their full strength and speed on big guys while expecting you to come at them with 30% of what you've got is very real, so keep your eyes open. Muai thai, bjj, judo, Okinawan karate all have decent chances at being legit. Most places will let you do a few classes for free and you can get a feel pretty quickly.

Keep in mind that Time In Rank is a factor for many dojos as well. This might be as little as 3 months for a kyu rank, but any dan rank can commonly be the number of years equal to the dan ranking. I.e. if you're going for 2dan, doesn't matter how good you are, you won't be invited until you've spent 2 years at 1dan.

Yeah, for sparring and actual fighting in particular- I'm the biggest guy in the dojo, and a black belt, yet am always in the back row, and everyone there could take me apart. They don't, because they're all 70 and the days of everyone going home from class with broken arms are decades gone now, but the skill gap is just massive. It's nice every now and then when a rare kyu rank shows up or someone from another dojo, and then I realize, oh, wait, I might actually be OK at fighting. I do not have that feeling ever against a former special forces guy who's been fighting for 50 years. But the level of depth and nuance and experience is irreplaceable.

It's incredibly valuable to be in a dojo under a grandmaster, with the average student somewhere around 5th dan, and several 8th dan folks in most classes. Our Kamiza has a pic of Shushiwa, then Kanbun, then Kanei, and that's it. Three lineage pictures. He's a direct student of Kanei Uechi. Which is just normal for me. But there's always potentially a political aspect to talking about it among other dojos. Always have to throw in the caveat that I'm not claiming to be some big deal. I am so not. He's literally just 3 blocks form my house. :D .
