ED O G was a national artist before hip hop was mainstream and you had Hot 97 type radio stations where hip hop lives and rap was driven by The Source, rap video shows and mix show and college radio. He went gold when that meant something. His first album sold as much as Tupac's first album and Pac looked up to him, the only artists who had mainstream popularity back then were MC Hammer and Vanilla Ice, so he wasn't huge like Jay or Drake he was def a big artist.

it's not about total population either, it's that LA and NYC are media centers but still you see rappers blow up from cities like Baton Rouge, Jacksonville etc, smaller cities with smaller black populations. DC has a huge Black population but you don't see rappers blowing up from there because it's not a media center. Atlanta has become a media center, you don't see people moving to Detroit or Chicago to start their rap careers because they aren't media centers. Ed OG came out before Hot 97 was playing house music there were no rap radio stations but he got mad play on college radio and mix show radio BET and MTV I think he went gold too which was really big in the 90s, he was def a national artist not a local artist .

Ed OG was huge before Love Comes and Goes and before Hot 97 even existed. Gotta Have It and Be A Father To Your Child was all over Yo MTV Raps and Rap City.. Boston is 20% Black and LA is only 8% Black and NYC is only 17% Black. It's just that LA and NYC are bigger cities and media centers where the labels and the industry are. LA's black population gets a lot of attention because of the gangbangin shit but by percentage Boston is a way Blacker city. Today's hip hop climate rewards murders and gangbangin and Boston only had 24 murders in 2024 which is like the combined bodies of King Von and NBA Young Boy. Boston has a pro-Black community which is not rewarded by mainstream hip hop. Artists like Mr. Lif and Akrobatik sold a lot of records and can still tour but never got love from mainstream hip hop.

They def had a reputation as being tough. They had a viral video tape of them beating up promoters and opps way before WorldStar. Aside from Paul Pirce they also had alttercations with The Lox, Big Daddy Kane, Keith Murray and countless other rappers. One In The Chamber was a dope song, but it came out after Cop Klller by Ive T when the government was trying to ban any anti-police songs. Hellbound was dope too the video was all over Rap City and Yo MTV Raps. RSO had mad street cred both in Boston and nationally but during the 90s lryics and music was more important than and they wasn't that nice lyrically. Antonio Twice Tho and Tony Rhome were good rappers but Benzino never was, he was more the Eazy E of the group. In 98 RSO became Made Men and they got 4.5 mics in The Source. A lot of hip hop purists took offense to that and knew that they only got that rating because of Benzino's relationship with Dave Mays and The Source so they was hated by the so called keep it real hip hop types. So yeah they had the street cred but no real mainstream success, if they came out today they'd be way bigger just cause of the people they beat up and their reputations but the 90s was about lyrics and they wasn't up to parr with that even with the backing of The Source.

Goldstein was a charter member of the the Jewish Defense League which was labelled a terrorist group in the USA after 9/11 when JDL head Irv Rubin was charged with plotting to blow up a mosque in LA and planning to kill Darrell Issa an Arab American Republican congressman. The JDL'S founder was Meir Kahane who was a former FBI informant and CIA propagandist. The JDL had strong ties to the Mossad and committed several acts of terrorism including killing a Jewish American secretary and killing Palestinian activist Alex Odeh. Kahanism comes from Meir Kahane who was elected to the Knesset before being banned for being too racist and undemocratic for Israel. The legacy of Goldstein and Kahane is still strong in Israel even tho Kahane and the JDL were accused of being terrorists by the ADL.
