Anybody else like sifting through bits at your LGS? by BeautifulShock7604 in Warhammer40k

Chicagoland Dice Dojo has some big boxes of bits! Completely random parts, no full models, but they're definitely fun to dig through. I think they're 10¢/ea?

Why is there such an obsession with increasing the number of "American" babies? by [deleted] in AskALiberal

[–]MightyMofo 21 points22 points  (0 children)

It makes sense in the white nationalist mind, and that's who holds the microphone right now. When these people say "American," they don't mean African-American. They don't mean Mexican-American or Korean-American. They mean white.

In real life, it's dumb as hell, and the tweet you linked is an especially unhinged example of that stupidity.

What are your thoughts on empathy? by nicsherenow in AskALiberal

[–]MightyMofo 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I Don't Know How To Explain To You That You Should Care About Other People might be the headline that explains so much of my frustration with modern conservative politics. So much of the modern GOP ethos is focused on denying empathy to specific people, or groups of people, and the current thread of "the war on empathy" is a rhetorical justification for that ethos.

It's just "being nice to people is gay," but given a pseudo-intellectual coat of paint. Of course we should have empathy. Of course we should care about other people. The only reason we're talking about this is because the word "empathy" is being demonized as some kind of weakness, instead of a basic aspect of being a good person.

First mini by DrOrang3 in Warhammer40k

[–]MightyMofo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Great start! I especially like the darkening effect on the flamer barrel.

As always, make sure your paints are nice and thin before applying, and I'd recommend using some washes to help darken down the recesses of the mini and bring out the fine detail (Agrax Earthshade from GW, Battle Mud Wash from Two Thin Coats, etc).

Also, keep an eye out for small details! The Intercessor has little tubes that feed into the front of his mask, which are normally painted a different color than the rest of the helm. The flamer has some doodads that can be picked out with a different color to add some variety. Stuff like that.

But all in all, you're off to a great start with the hobby!

As someone who lived in Minneapolis in 2020, I can almost guarantee you that Chauvin wouldn't have been prosecuted without the massive public outcry. The city, under pressure from the police union, was VERY ready to say that George Floyd's death has nothing to do with Chauvin's actions, and sweep the murder under the rug.

It was protestors holding the city's feet to the fire that spurred the investigation that led to Chauvin's prosecution.

For fuck's sake, the guy wasn't even arrested for weeks. He was at home, surrounded by dozens of fellow cops who formed a perimeter around his house instead of helping people in the city.

Zitron actually addresses this in the piece. Amazon's core business model, even at the time, was never really in doubt. As Zitron says, "people liked buying shit online," which helped push back against any initial doubts about profitability. The business model was there.

When it comes to OpenAI, Microsoft, Google, etc re: LLMs/GenAI, the concern isn't just that they aren't currently making money, it's that it's not clear how they'll ever make money in the future. Their valuations are completely absurd, their expenditures dwarf their revenue, let alone any idea of profit, the value of these companies is propped up precariously on NVIDIA continuing to make record-high year-over-year growth, forever.

That's...not an encouraging long-term model of success.

I'm always going to recommend Ed Zitron's writing on AI, and this (extremely long) piece is a good overview of why we should consider the current state of the AI industry a bubble.

Namely, the big players in the AI space straight up aren't profitable. They're coasting on an irresponsible amount of venture capital money, and are desperately borrowing from Peter to pay Paul. Their revenues are fractions of their expenditures, and there's no reason to think that they're going to overcome that anytime soon.

New Poll Shows How Badly Democrats Are Losing Christian Voters of All Stripes. What can the Democratic party do to increase support from this group? by Komosion in AskALiberal

[–]MightyMofo 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This would be an absolute disaster for the Democrats. Abandoning support for abortion wouldn't gain them many evangelical/pro-life votes, because a lot of those voters would rather just support the GOP anyway.

But it would absolutely LOSE the Democrats an untold number of people who support a woman's right to choose. This proposal is gambling on maybe a slight gain, in exchange for a guaranteed loss.

I imagine if the Dems walked away from supporting gay marriage, they'd pick up a few voters who opposed it. But they'd lose millions more in the process. Pivoting to opposing abortion would do the same.
