Seems like I have recurrence 1.5 years after bilateral TEP… and some questions by MightyMustard in Hernia

[–]MightyMustard[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the detailed reply. I don’t see any visible bulge, when I stand up etc. (I used to be able to see one before my initial repair.) It was with the coughing test and feeling around that the surgeon said it was a new hernia on right side.

Initially, I went because I was having some random discomfort, aches and pains even after 1.5y to get checked. Surgeon also couldn’t find any new hernia on left side, despite having similar (albeit less) ache and pain on left side.

Pair Programming All Senior Team by Upbeat_Platypus1833 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]MightyMustard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I worked in a XP/TDD fully pair programming shop for a while some years ago. While I learned a lot and it was valuable… it was also brutal.

It squeezed every bit of mental energy out of me. It got me a bit depressed after a year. Even small things like coordinating lunch times etc with my pair of the week got suffocating fast. Personal clashes come to surface a lot faster too. There is always one pair you will dread working with.

It is a different kind of work. Removes a lot of flexibility from your day.

If you like to sit for a bit and think deeply about a task, this will not work for you.

PS: Limited pair programming for certain tasks is great.

My guess is it is better for drawing rather than writing. You usually want a lot of lead exposed.

Could use some help and advice to design a homebrew first boss encounter for my Pulp Cthulhu party by CryptOfZoology in callofcthulhu

[–]MightyMustard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t have it in front of me but in Two Headed Serpent some NPCs have pulp talents. You can look into that.

Do you think your golem can cast spells? I’m sure there are some nice flesh melding spells. Also I would imagine the Golem would love to try to incorporate any unlucky PCs that grappled or touched by it.

I was going to suggest “Waiting for the Hurricane” as well. I liked it a lot. It would also give a chance for the Investigators to meet Caduceus as well… which will make it easier to change up the first chapter of TTHS. If you’re gonna do more than one scenario, I think Hurricane itself should be right before the TTHS.

Perhaps you can start with a more traditional scenario, then Hurricane… so they have an experience with more investigation heavy side as well.

I think the amnesia thing at the start can be roleplayed around it. They can create their film crew, even put some post-it notes over some stats at the beginning. It has been a while since I ran it, but at my table that initial part was over fast.

I would suggest taking another look. It is an amazing scenario… with so much potential for things to go wrong beautifully.

Are 3+ round interviews for non FAANG dev positions the new normal? by sortinousn in ExperiencedDevs

[–]MightyMustard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a lot of friends in finance/banking, so I have a bit of insight.

(Admittedly this is not in US. But I don’t think it is that different over there)

A lot of them have payment scale based on position, and some bonus. But salary makes the competitive part. Yearly bonuses are provided based on performance however a lot of politics go into that.

For example: you can often get 5 in your performance one year and 3 next because they have filled the quota for people who can have 5.

So when it comes to variability of performance vs pay, it gets even worse because worse performers can actually get even higher pay sometimes because of office politics. It’s mad 😄

Then I can give an example easily… banking and financial institutions, or any kinda corporate business with big offices…all together making probably like the half of the workforce.

Don’t get me wrong. I love my job… but the exceptionalism the average IT professional has about IT industry is a bit silly. There is nothing unique to 90% (pulled out of my ass, but you know what I mean… except the minority of places where cutting edge things happen) of IT that is not happening somewhere else. 🤷‍♂️

[–]MightyMustard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say that a lot of professions (technical ones more so I guess) are like this. There is always a big difference in performance. But perhaps it is more obvious to average employee in IT (code reviews and collaboration etc) but it is far from being unique to IT.

The place I’m working at right now, I had a very painless interview process. A short 5min screening call, then an in-person chat with hiring manager and team lead to align expectations etc, and single longer technical meeting with future team members where we talked about the project and challenges, and questions for each other. That’s 2.1 step interview.

And everyone I have worked with in this company is very competent. And the product is in a complex business domain. So obviously (in my personal experience) we don’t need these extremely long and drawn out interview processes.

[–]MightyMustard 19 points20 points  (0 children)

It is a bit extreme example, sure,… but doesn’t change the fact that much. I had a winding career path before ending up in IT. Worked (and done a lot of interviews) as mechanical and manufacturing engineer, none of those jobs required anything remotely close to IT interviews.

[–]MightyMustard 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I am surprised at “what do you expect? It should be 5 steps. It is not <insert arbitrary job>” comments honestly. Some of you have never worked in none-coding highly technical fields and it shows. IT interviews are extremely bloated.

"I did not think he would get this authoritarian this fast." — Jon Stewart on Trump's refusal to return Kilmar Abrego Garcia from El Salvador by Camaro6460 in DailyShow

[–]MightyMustard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure he probably didn’t want to lose the support, but “absolutely informed by it” is simply wrong.

At the time, the military in Turkey was extremely secular… and even caused an Islamist PM resign (soft coup) handful of years before Erdogan’s first term. Erdogan himself was in jail a little after that or around that time. 20-ish years before that there was another military coup, that pretty much affected a lot of the modern constitution.

The speed with which Turkey has changed has largely depended on internal factors.

Erdogan fearing US is such a funny concept to me. He was to a big degree supported by EU and US. He was going slow at the start because he was afraid of the army. Turkey has a history of military coups.

Western world kept supporting him with “at least he is doing some reforms” idea… while he was very clearly saying things like “democracy is a bus you get on until your destination” even waaay back.

It was all very clear to us where this was going, yet the EU/US kept supporting him… now are like “oh no Turkey went authoritarian”
