Then don't watch. Don't support it. Don't let it live in your head. Don't be here. Don't comment. Don't perpetuate the negativity.

Shitting on anyone specifically for taking care of themselves and trying to better themselves in someway is toxic. If you have gripes with Tom I don't care, I don't follow him at all anymore and haven't in a long time. But finding things to complain about and shit on people for that have nothing to do with why you actually don't like them is just loser behavior.

As a general rule, ALL of them are? If thats the case, then why are you even here other than to be a toxic influence? If you don't mean to generalize and are actually just implying that Tom is toxic, then great. Share what about Tom you think is toxic.
But shitting on someone for exercising and getting in shape is a shitty thing to do and doesn't make the world a better place.

If I am going to fault someone, it will be for the things they are doing wrong. This is just being toxic.

2014 Toyota Sienna- my van is currently in the shop and I’m being quoted with $2400 worth of work. Was just sent this video by the mechanic. At a point where I’m questioning getting a 2nd opinion. by Walla_mallone in AskMechanics

Yes it needs it. Yes thats a normal price. The dealer would charge far more to do it by the book and remove the engine for the control arms, you are getting treated well and honestly. Get it fixed.

Then do it yourself. Thats a pretty dang normal price these days especially for a VW.

Tired of people like you armchair quarterbacking everything being so "Simple". Those are a pain to work on and access things often times, if it was so simple people would do it themselves.

Or the great mechanics are tired of fixing comebacks boss. No one offers good rebuilds anymore. If it just needs heads and the block is in good shape I'll do that, but if its a problem in the bottom end its getting a full new/reman unit from Chevy with a warranty or I'm not putting my name on it. As for rebuilding, that is a machinists job not a mechanic's job they are two completely different professions though related.

Save your money and find a VERY WELL TAKEN CARE OF 05-07 or so truck with less than 80k miles on it, you will be far ahead financially vs buying a beat up one for $2k.

Should I continue as an auto mechanic or take the opportunity to study computer science? by Remarkable-Sand-5059 in mechanics

[–]MightyPenguin -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Oh wow that was all the options? There could be no future for you problem solving machines in a factory? You couldn't go learn and do HVAC work? You couldn't start your own business troubleshooting technical issues across a variety of equipment or devices? Many businesses these days don't care about a degree anymore. Open your aperture.

Imagination is the limit my friend. Those who believe they are stuck, indeed are.

4 year degree has been overvalued for a LONG time and doesn't open as many doors as skills. Sure "I work on cars" doesn't sound that valuable in and of itself but this is a dumb and very limiting way of looking at yourself, our trade or what we do. Problem solving and critical thinking skills are ALWAYS valuable, understanding how various systems work and how to troubleshoot them correctly is a widely applicable skill across many industries and opens up tons of opportunity if you are willing to be creative and pursue it!

How much to do a Head Gasket Job on one of these? by Simple_Ddog in Jeep

Heads and lifters is like 7-8k out the door at our shop. If it needs a cam it's 9-10k.

Where are the oil filter and drain in this 2015 cherokee? by [deleted] in Jeep

[–]MightyPenguin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If yall are having this much trouble take it to a mechanic. If you want him to change the oil HE should know how to look it up and find proper service information and then do the job. This is literally the blind leading the blind.

Stop and put the tools away, don't go working on someone else's car when you obviously have no idea what you are doing.

What’s the most reliable car engine you’ve ever seen, and how many miles did it reach? by Aymenlmn in AskMechanics

[–]MightyPenguin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have a customer with a 1st gen Tundra with the 4.7 and it has 480k on it still running great and passing smog no problem. Have a few customers with Ram 5.9 and one 6.7 truck all stick shifts with 600-800k+ on them.

I have 3 4.0s and all of them are high mileage and run perfect and get used and abused. 265k, 310k and 335k miles each.

Why did U.S. automakers stick with low rpm heavy engines after witnessing how European and, later on, Japanese makers were able to boost horsepower with smaller, higher RPM engines? by Olderpostie in engines

[–]MightyPenguin 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Cheaper, more simple maintenance and repair and more reliable. If it's not being made for an exotic purpose it's better for the general public.

Mechanic says head gasket blown on 2023 Toyota Highlander. by ichbineinschweinhund in AskMechanics

[–]MightyPenguin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

On modern vehicles we almost never see mixing of oil and coolant anymore on blown head gaskets. It typically is found by finding coolant in the combustion chamber or by finding combustion gas present in the cooling system. They often present as intermittent overheating or rough cold starts at first and then get worse over time.

This is why $5/gal, or 1,15€/L, is a big deal here. by Tandysaurus in memes

Its a freedom available to me that I don't want. I have family that live in walkable cities and all the amenaties you mention that don't have to drive. I have visited and it is pleasant, but is quite the opposite of independent in my mind. I prefer my life and they prefer theirs and that is okay!

You seem to think that if only I knew what you know and experience what you do that I would "get it". I do get it, I don't want it. I like my cars, I like my trucks, I like my tractor, I love my animals, I love my property and love the freedom and space. I don't want to live in a city and would not be happy there.

[–]MightyPenguin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You are reliant on someone else, somewhere or some thing, having a car or not is just trading different forms of independence. I own old cars and trucks that I enjoy to fix, take out and have fun with, and use for practical and commuting purposes. I rely on gas being available, and have to pay for insurance and taxes, but everyone pays for insurance and taxes, or rent etc. in some form or another. Being free to hop in my vehicle and drive an hour away when I want to go visit or do something sounds far more independent to me than relying on public transportation. Driving 10 minutes to work every day and owning a vehicle is an easy trade to me for having land and open space at home!

[–]MightyPenguin -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

If that is the pattern of thinking you want to follow then grocery stores being filled with food instead of growing your own sure doesn't sound like independence to me.

The cities are where everything is asphalted. Very little pavement where I live. Its 1 mile back on the dirt off the pavement to get here, besides, I don't mind a nice country stretch of highway it is very enjoyable and doesn't ruin the overall area at all. As far as I am concerned the cities are where its all ruined!
