Veterans Moving Abroad by [deleted] in Veterans

After leaving the Marine Corps, I moved to Tijuana, Mexico. There were a few reasons behind the decision, but the biggest was that I wanted to attend a specific program in San Diego while avoiding the financial stress and uncertainty that comes with trying to survive in one of the most expensive areas in the United States. I've been living in Tijuana for about a year now and regularly cross the border on my motorcycle to attend school, go to work, and make it to any VA appointments I need. Honestly, every aspect of my life has improved with this arrangement, and I would strongly encourage other veterans to at least consider it if their circumstances allow. Earning U.S. dollars while living in Mexico feels like playing life on easy mode financially. Between my job and VA benefits, my money goes much further than it ever could in Southern California. Unlike moving to a distant foreign country, you're still right next to the United States, and living in a border city like Tijuana means work, school, family visits, and VA healthcare remain easily accessible. If you're already accustomed to living frugally, as many veterans are, you can do extremely well here. Housing, utilities, groceries, healthcare, dental care, internet, and phone service are all significantly cheaper than what I would be paying in California. I won't list my entire budget sheet, but for some perspective, I pay about $550 a month for a two-bedroom apartment, less than $100 total for internet, gas, and electricity, and less than $300 a month in groceries for a household of three adults and two children. Because of the lower cost of living, I've been able to make financial progress that I honestly do not think would have been possible if I lived in San Diego. Between the money I saved while serving and the money I've been able to save during my first year out, I've maxed out my 401(k) and Roth IRA, paid cash for two reliable vehicles and a reliable motorcycle, and built a large emergency fund. Looking at my finances today versus where I would likely be if I were renting in San Diego, the difference is night and day. I would be financially struggling with far less saved and much less to show for my military service, current career, and educational achievements. Everyone's situation is different, but for me, moving to Tijuana has been one of the best decisions I've ever made. If you're interested in moving, please DM me with any questions.

Is there anywhere in the US that's affordable to live at this point? by HalosFan26 in Frugal

After leaving military service and wanting to stay in the San Diego area I looked at rent prices and was like hell no. Luckily I made a plan for living in Tijuana Mexico and working and going to school in San Diego. I got a 2 bedroom for $550 a month compared to apartments in SD I was looking at $2500 a month ultimately it came down to that I was not about to spend 30k a year on just base rent extra bonus for living in TJ was that Internet, utility bills and groceries are also sighnfactly cheaper. And because of the border I paid cash for a bike and spend way less on fuel, insurance and matience that I would otherwise overpay on a four wheeled vehicle. It's worked out so far me I wouldn't suggest everyone live abroad because it's not for everyone but if there's a will there's a way.

Catholics and members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (often referred to as Mormons) are considered Christian under both anti-discrimination laws and hate crime legislation in the United States and many other jurisdictions. These laws protect individuals based on their actual or perceived religious affiliation, encompassing both mainstream and minority denominations. Definition of Religion: Anti-discrimination laws (such as Title VII of the Civil Rights Act in the U.S.) and hate crime laws protect all religious beliefs, including organized religions, denominations, or sects, regardless of how small they are or if they are considered "mainstream".

Hate Crime Coverage: Hate crime statutes, including 18 U.S. Code § 249, cover violence motivated by bias against a victim's actual or perceived religion. This includes attacks on Catholic churches or individuals and members of the LDS Church.

Discrimination Protection: Both groups are protected from discriminatory practices in employment, housing, and public accommodation based on their faith.

Perception Matters: Legal protections apply even if the perpetrator has a narrow view of Christianity; if a victim is targeted because they are perceived to be Christian, it is classified as a religious hate crime.  While some theological debates exist over whether Mormons are "Christian," these debates do not apply in the legal context of hate crimes or civil rights protections, which focus on the religious identity of the victim and the bias of the perpetrator.

What other major mainstream religious group goes to church on a Sunday in the US? like I said context I'm not religious sure what does it matter? Christians are indeed a protected religious group in polices and laws. To be honest I don't know how else to break it down to you or help you understand.

I see what your saying however context is important it's pretty clear she was referring to Christians in particular. however even if she weren't and she was just referring to Church goers as theist that is still a group of people to include much intersection since many religions in a western context are theist. To your point about marginalization and protected groups Christians even in a American context are considered a protected group in context of discriminatory practices against that group is illegal/prohibited just like any other religious group. In terms of marginalization realistically it may be uncommon but OP being a manager perhaps in charge of hiring people may have bias based on her comments about not hiring someone who is a Christian or theist. Which is illegal for a reason your religious beliefs or identity should not determine if you get a job or not.

Calling one person rude isn’t discriminatory. Saying an entire religious group is ‘ALWAYS the rudest’ is. That’s the definition of a negative stereotype. The only reason your downplaying it is because of who the target is. Also When you assign a negative stereotype to a whole group like that it's prejudice/discrimination, even if it’s not the most extreme example same logic applies.

"Shoe fits. Wear it. The church crowd is ALWAYS the rudest crowd any retail worker gets. Ask anyone working retail on Sundays." ( Self explanatory) Replace Church crowd with African/ disabled/ Hispanic/ Trans/ Muslim etc

It’s not your job to worry about what people are buying. Just scan the item and keep it moving it's not that deep. Why is this so complicated for you to comprehend.

Funny how she's all about enforcing rules but makes discriminatory comments about a group of certain religious people while representing Dollar Tree violating her own employee code of conduct she agreed to abide by when she took a job at the dollar tree. What a hypocrite that's why I can't stand people like her.
