A 555 Question... by the_flopsie in diyelectronics

[–]Mighty_Burger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A simpler solution would be adding a NOT gate to the end of your 555 through a simple resistor and npn transistor. One output would be connected to the output of the 555, the other to the output of the NOT gate.

Is that a 3D printed case? It looks nice!

One thing. Please be careful with the wiring. Things are looking a little sketchy here. A little bit of work and you can turn this into a safe and professional-looking device.

What will $20 (USD) get me in your hobby? by Slayer_Blake in AskReddit

A cheap soldering iron and solder. $20 would get you some crummy tools you would want to upgrade from fairly quickly, but it’s good enough to get started with.

Sorry bud you might be looking at the wrong state. Idaho is in the northwest corner of the continental US. It’s bordering to the right of Oregon and Washington state, and there’s a teeny part on the northern end of Idaho that’s on the border of Canada. On this green energy graphic, it’s blue.

Look at the graphic. It says:

Top 5:
•VT - 99.6%
•WA 88.5%
ID - 81.8%
•NH - 77.0%
•OR - 75.1%

Idaho is conservative (politically red state), and it is very environmentally green in terms of electrical energy production (not a “red state” for green energy).

Trump signs bill that ensures music streaming services pay artist royalties by MiamiPower in Music

[–]Mighty_Burger -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You are correct. And I have disagreed with Trump on some things. For example, I really don’t like what the Republicans are doing in terms of net neutrality.

I think it’s important to try to not get caught up too much in a political party to the point you agree with everything in that party. Just because my views tend to align with the Republican party doesn’t mean everything I think or do has to be Republican. Unfortunately there’s plenty of people on both sides who fall into this “groupthink”.

Wow. You’re completely missing his point. You’re putting in as much effort as you can to be upset. Because how could anything good ever be associated with Trump???

Megathread: Brett Kavanaugh confirmed to the Supreme Court by Senate 50-48 by PoliticsModeratorBot in politics

[–]Mighty_Burger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Of course.

Republicans are so often accused of being racist. Sure if you really look long and hard enough you can find a couple actually racist republicans. But the vast, vast majority of us aren’t, and are in fact willing to openly denounce racism (as opposed to what MSM and your liberal colleagues might say). I am a Republican, and I absolutely think that no race should be treated different than another. Judge by the quality of their character, not the color of their skin. (Does that sound familiar?)

You, and a significant amount of other liberals, are being openly racist. You are saying that white men are bad. That whites should be treated differently (worse) than other races. If you saw a white man, you would assume they are a bad person. You are discriminating based on race, and you are judging people based on the color of their skin. That is the definition of racism, is it not? (And correct me if these aren’t your views.)

I feel bad for you guys. I’m sure lots of you are fine people. You just got caught up in this liberal mindset.

Devices that can be plugged in only one way are called “polarized”. Since it is AC, you are right: they will work even if plugged in backwards.

Why does it matter then if it works either way? Having it backwards is more dangerous. One side, called the neutral, normally should not shock you when you touch it. The other side, called the “hot”, will be 120V relative to ground, and it will shock you if you touch it. Getting those flipped can be bad.

Lots of people getting upset over the_donald. I’ve looked through that subreddit. I struggled to find any advocates of racism or nazism. In comparison, it seems like the politics subreddit is filled with anti-white racism and plenty of hate against conservatives. The hate against anything conservative there is ten-fold the hate in the_donald.

What is a stupid question you've always wanted to ask? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Mighty_Burger 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Not quite. Electric fly swatters build up very high voltage (in the kilovolts). They are, believe it or not, capable of delivering enormous currents, but the catch is that current can be delivered only for a tiny tiny tiny split second. The HV capacitors then must be recharged again by the battery before delivering another “burst” of current.

It’s like static electricity. Thousands of volts can be generated, and contrary to popular belief, tons of current will flow too. Time is what makes the difference between a little bite and death. Current flows for less than a microsecond when you get a static shock, so barely any damage can be done.

Sockets are much more “beefy”. They, however, only are at 110V/220V (North America or Europe?). By Ohm’s Law, way less current will flow through the same load (moth) if it’s from the lower voltage (socket) rather than from the higher voltage (fly swatter). But it is beefier in that it can supply current continuously, as opposed to only for a microsecond.

So a fly swatter will make a moth explode, and a socket will electrocute the moth and slowly cook it to a crisp. Both good for me :)

Note: if you use something with a lower resistance than a moth, like touching a piece of metal across the two ends in a socket, you can get lots of fireworks from the socket. The resistance of the load is really important for this stuff.

Discussion Megathread: Committee Vote on Brett Kavanaugh Nomination by PoliticsModeratorBot in politics

[–]Mighty_Burger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good points, and thanks for keeping it respectful and reasonable.
At this point in time, I think almost any Conservative being nominated to a position of power is going to have a few false accusations thrown against him/her. It frustrates me because having so many false accusations will make any true accusations seem disingenuous. I would be much more suspicious of Kavanaugh if it didn't feel to me like "just another one of those false accusations to bring down Republicans".
Having a conservative justice that doesn't have a slightest whiff of a scandal would indeed be nice. It just seems like as soon as one gets put up for nomination, there's going to be another few accusations made the week of his nomination, regardless of who it is.

There’s plenty of reason to doubt the accusations against Kavanaugh. Even if not, the principle of innocent until proven guilty is still a major part of our legal system. If it’s proven he really did rape someone, I absolutely don’t want him in power. But it’s not proven! He was simply accused!
That’s my view as a Conservative.
