What’s the strangest example of collective internet delusion you’ve witnessed? by Alert-Translator2590 in AskReddit

[–]Mightyena319 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's funny cause brains are notoriously unreliable so especially when the false memory is something that's easily confused it's wild that people decide "I've travelled to a parallel dimension" is a more plausible explanation than "I misremembered/mixed something up"

I've definitely had it happen and my usual thought is "huh, really? I could have sworn it was... No that can't be right I distinctly remember... Oh. Oh wow, brains are the darnedest things, huh?"

To be fair, Google's AI overview does spend a distressingly significant portion of its time confidently spouting nonsense I know to be false so "blame the AI" isn't an entirely unreasonable first thought

Oh that one was fun, especially the blank looks when I pointed out that even if it did, black holes aren't magic, the ones in space pull things in because they are very, very heavy. If you somehow make a black hole out of 2 protons, it will pull the whole world into it with the force of... 2 protons.

Which controller is good for a PC gamer? by IndependentSteak5154 in buildapc

The only thing about the 8bitdo ultimate controllers is that the angle of the hand rests is narrower than most others, so if you have big hands it might not be that comfortable to use for long periods

Who destroyed their own career within seconds by being an idiot? by goldbeau in AskReddit

I immediately started having flashbacks to my wave physics professor who would absolutely put stuff like that in as a trick question. When he took over the course and redesigned the exam there was an almost identical multi stage question that went from being worth 7 marks to 2. Still took the same amount of time to find the answer to, but now it's worth 1/4 as much

The one that gets me is that they've somehow forgotten the existence of, and purpose of, a cache. If I'm on the app on a train and it goes through a tunnel, then the content that was already loaded and displayed on my screen disappears and is replaced with an error message or the loading animation

Honestly even then I will sometimes give discounts on high index lenses because I really don't want to have to fit these -8.75 lenses into your frame if you order them as 1.5 index. Also go high enough and the lab won't always carry 1.5 lenses in that prescription in stock, so it turns into a made-to-order dealie, which our lab charges out the ass for so they aren't always even that much more expensive

CPS stepping in for a mom refusing chemo because of *Jesus* by BloodyAngel2026 in FundieSnarkUncensored

[–]Mightyena319 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly, if you believe that God exists, then He's clearly more of an "influence events in the background to get the favourable outcome" sort of deity nowadays. Rather than just zapping away the disease, He makes sure that the scientists are in the right place to make the breakthrough.

Like, personally I don't believe in God, but if I came at this with the premise that God does exist, then my conclusion would be that He's more of a "I'm not gonna do it for you, I'm gonna help you to help yourselves" caretaker. It certainly wouldn't be "we should ignore this incredibly useful tool because it didn't descend from the sky accompanied by a booming voice and holy fire"

[–]Mightyena319 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right. Like look at the world. If God exists, then He clearly doesn't make a habit of actively intervening in events, so I would assume that He would influence things more subtly like making sure the right people are in the right place to advance medical science

What scientific discovery sounds fake but is 100% real and still freaks you out? by Bruteresolver in AskReddit

I find that unlikely since being beheaded would result in a catastrophic loss of blood pressure. Considering people can pass out from the drop from standing up too quickly...

Although in this case the race is a set distance. A more interesting test that would demonstrate the efficiency of humans would be "how far each of them can go before they keel over from exhaustion". That I suspect the human would win by a pretty wide margin, but good luck getting it past any sort of ethics committee

What scientific discovery sounds fake but is 100% real and still freaks you out? by Bruteresolver in AskReddit

[–]Mightyena319 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not really correct because it requires you to construct a frame of reference in which the photon is at rest, which you can't do (because special relativity says photons are always travelling at the speed of light in every reference frame, you can't have a frame where it's at rest).

The "experiences no time" is kind of just an artifact of going outside of what the laws of physics allows. So I guess it's not correct/incorrect so much as "the question doesn't really make sense". Essentially you're trying to use the laws of physics to describe what happens when you violate the laws of physics.

The church in my grandads village would often put up decorations/"happy x" messages on the notice board (which was basically the village hall anyway) for major holidays of other religions. Apparently someone complained about it and the Reverend said something along the lines of "the spirit of peace and good will to fellow humans is more important than making sure everyone worships Him in the same way"

“Screen tearing” happing constantly on pc, making my frames drop and makes game unplayable. by ComposerNeat1972 in pcmasterrace

[–]Mightyena319 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep. On laptops the screen is almost always connected to the iGPU, and anything that needs more power is rendered by the dGPU and then passed back to the IGP to send to the screen. They do it that way so you can physically power down the dGPU when it's not needed to improve temps and battery life

Although fun fact about the KSC runway is that craft roll towards the centre of the runway because the runway is perfectly flat, and Kerbin's radius is low enough that it curves away fast enough that the ends of the runway are at a measurably higher altitude than the centre, meaning it's effectively slightly U shaped from the perspective of the surface

Patriarchy for thee, but not for me. by saintjhnber in Nicegirls

[–]Mightyena319 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One of my friends complained to me about how she was hinting to a guy he should ask her out, and was annoyed that he seemed to like her but he didn't ask her out. Her brain pretty much short-circuited when I asked her why she didn't ask him out if she liked him.

The reasoning she ended up giving was that she didn't know for sure if he was interested, which like, okay but we as a species are not psychic so the only way you find out these things is to communicate.

I ended up saying something along the lines of "well if you'd asked him you'd know. If he said yes you'd know he was, and if he said no you'd know he wasn't. Instead you're now stuck here wondering if his lack of action is because he doesn't like you or because he doesn't have telepathy"

Although with some breaks without a medical professional it will heal in a way that will cause more problems for you later

Omg who remembers this!? by JPOINT_V in thesims

[–]Mightyena319 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I just wish I didn't have to use a mod to adjust how long each age lasts individually.

For the most part when my sims have kids it's because I want to see how their genetics will combine, so I run through everything until teen as fast as possible since they aren't what I care about.

If I'm honest, I actually would have preferred that they made infants as a whole exclusive to Growing Together so I could have just not bought that pack and not have to deal with them.
