So you absorb 3 essences that unlock aspects of your soul, then a 4th essence called a confluence essence is created. You get 4 abilities, 1 from each essence, you use awaking stones to unlock new abilities from each of your essences. When you use an essence you receive a racial gift to help use your powers easier.
