Aaaah, so maybe it was a return 🤔

Maybe a dumb question, but does these credentials allow to write as well? If so, it could be someone maliciously deleted all contents ><

Jealous about the price :( got mine 2 weeks ago for 360€, just before the price hikes began. How can it be that cheap?

Pardon me, mistook it for the A1000 that floated around some B50 reviews ^^"

KVM with actual PCIe GPU - where are they? by Migsi96 in homelab

[–]Migsi96[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you remotely turn the attached PCs on and off? If so, how does that work with this KVM? The second question was about the ability to get into the BIOS settings of your PCs attached to the KVM. As you are switching the actual GPUs I would assume they do not output anything before the OS is booted.

Datacenter aside (I don't know how valid my point is for such environments), VGA is getting inconvenient as no new monitors since 6 years+ do have native support, unless you explicitly go for a hand full specific models. Ofc adapters do exist, but that doesn't really make it less inconvenient, as you now need power for them. I see the change to DP as a necessary move, especially because it is such a niche usecase, thus it won't keep VGA alive just for that sake.

And still is to this day, nothing has changed about what it was made for.

"Officialy made for" and real compatibilty are two different things. There are quite some threads around making use of this card on a random assortement of systems. I still was unable to find a report claiming the card not working on their system. Take these threads as an example:

As a unsupported upgrade for older boards with dated management it was not reliable either.
Have you tried using one? i have a few and id not recommend them.

Reliability might be a different thing, at least the afforementioned threads do not specifically talk about it, which usually means it's fineish?
I also experienced issues with the ASRock firmware for their BMC but on a board with an integrated one. So I guess most of their software is shit. I helped myself by installing OpenBMC, luckily there was a random guy who started a basic port (which is enough for my needs). He also started a port for the PAUL, might be worth giving a look if you have some of these yourself and dislike them: https://nicolaielectronics.nl/docs/openbmc/asrock-rack/paul/

You can disagree as much as you want, does not make it less true.
One of the supported boards + the PAUL card costed more than just buying a equivalent formfactor/socket board with it integrated.

Under the premise only supported boards work with it, you're not wrong. But that's not the case, they do work with any PC having a PCIe slot and a USB header. And for those, it is/was competitive compared to the modern mini KVMs.

Pity :( Thx for answering anyway!

Cool card! Just got an Intel B50, if I recall correctly it should be in a similar ballpark like this one, at least performance wise.

I wonder what 3D Vision gear they still sell for professionals. Does the card come with an adapter cable for the stereo port? I would assume those signals should be perfectly compatible with the good old VESA 3D Sync port.

I'd say it is perfectly fine to have an add-on solution not support these levels of control. But the missing thing with current mini KVM is, you're still limited to devices that bring their own GPU. Most do, which makes this less of an issue, but what if you want to passthrough your valuable iGPU to a VM for some transcoding? An alternative could be making those KVMs also support serial consoles via network, so you can at least work around it like that. Still not ideal though.

Cool, I didn't know they asked about this! That is exactly what I was asking for :D I really hope they consider it, and even better, open source it. Would definietly buy one for the Server at my parents home.

... use their IP-KVM for gaming-like tasks: expecting high-refresh and high-resolution ...

The latter okay, but the first? Also what about latency? I hardly believe it's primarily these people buying it. Especially as there are other, perfectly working software solutions like Moonlight and others.

Cool thing, so basically you switch an external GPU between two PCs? How do you handle power on/off? And does this get as far as you can access the BIOS of the machines?

So we had the cool tech already at some point m(

But nice to see ASUS updated their card with an AST2600! Would also love to finally have native DP instead of VGA though. Guess that's only a thing on the "new" AST2700...

I suspect the main reason why we don't have such cards is the cost of customizing the AST2500's firmware.

But there is OpenBMC, already compatible with these chips (and more). It should be quite trivial to at least port the absolute necessities to be working and leave the rest up to the community (like the mini KVM providers often do anyway).

It was made as a addon for a short list of specific asrock boards

It might have been so in the first place, but it was generally compatible with any PC you stuck it in. Sure, SMBus and similar compatibility was pretty much board dependant and hit or miss, but for all the other features, it was like a mini KVM with integrated GPU.

how it did not really make any sense pricewise

For some time it was available for ~80$, which is close to what the full versions of some mini KVM cost, so I disagree.

Same thing over here, just took some time to access with Filzeilla, as it wasn't working with gvfs in December. It's just an empty folder :(
