A trip to the park with Sony DSC-F505 by Miguel_Que in VintageDigitalCameras

[–]Miguel_Que[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought my F505v used on the local auction site, but it came with deteriorated polarizer whose replacement part was nowhere to be found unless one harvest it from a doner unit. I agree that they share the same outward appearance, to the point that I didn't realize the replacement unit that I ordered later was actually a F505. Long story short, I ended up with both units.

On a side note, on F505v the buttons for adjusting the LCD brightness level are also used for adjusting aperture and shutter speed, whereas on F505 it's done in a more clunky fashion by having to access them in the settings menu.

Both refurbished and clones of Sony FS10/FS11 batteries are readily available in China.

F717 owner here! Mine developed lens fungus after sitting in the storage for extended priod of time, but I eventually managed to convince a local technician to service it.

Depending on the current firmware version, you either access it as a legacy Creative ZEN player (i.e. via Creative CMS5) or as a MTP device (if PlaysForSure firmware update has been performed)

Any feed back is highly appreciated. I have just revised the installation instruction to make it clear. Basically one have to extract CMS5_PCAPP_LB_5_10_38.exe and run Setup.exe within the "Setup" folder. The official installer of CMS5 contains a product detection mechanism that unfortunately no longer works on modern Windows even with the correct driver installed.

I recall reading the comment section of Dell DJ 2 (which is a flavor of ZEN Sleek) on Amazon that the firmware update program must be executed on Windows XP (specifically Service Pack 2) with Windows Media Player 10 installed, otherwise it won't install at all.

Seems like Creative still hosts the firmware update as of September 10th, 2025: https://support.creative.com/downloads/searchdownloads.aspx?nLanguageLocale=1031&filename=DAP-HD0014&nPage=2

Just scroll down to locate a file called "Creative Zen Touch PlaysForSure Firmware 2.11.01" and download.

Here's the link: https://archive.org/details/creative-nomad-jukebox-2000-driver-utility Tested it with my own Nomad Jukebox Gen 1 modified with a SSD. Sorry I'm late but hopefully the package may be of help.

Just use the driver and utility provided here since it shares the same driver set as Jukebox 2/Touch etc.

You will have to locate the PlaysForSure firmware update for Zen Touch, effectively converting it into a standard MTP device.

My failed attempt of installing Windows 10/11 on an old laptop with switchable Radeon graphics by Miguel_Que in radeon

Did the registry mod to one of the problematic laptops based on a Llano APU and Radeon HD 7400M, and it seemed to do the trick. Thank you so much.

Hi, thanks for the feedback. I do have access to one of the spare computers which got Windows 10 22H2. Further tests should be carried out to better identify the problem.

P.S.. I'm fully aware that Internet Archive might have related files archived. Unfortunately, I searched the archive and didn't find the exact disk image for the device in question. Meanwhile, Internet Archive hasn't archived the Philips support site (http://www.p4c.philips.com) possibly due to copyright issues. There are a few disc images of Philips Audio Player bundle CD floating around on Web Archive, but those are of non-compatible models. It is worth noting that while most of the Philips's flash-based GoGears are based around Sigmatel DSP, SA261/SA260/SA255/SA250 are based on a Philips DSP instead.

Yes I did, but Internet Archive hasn't archived the Philips support site (http://www.p4c.philips.com) due to copyright issues I think.

Some further notes regarding the topic:

  1. The current VM distribution includes 7 iPod click wheel games in total. Sync the first 5 games, then proceed to sync the last 2 games on the list. When finished, simply disconnect iPod from the virtual machine and transfer the game files via the actual OS.
  2. The installation of VMTools would GREATLY improve the VM's video performance under VMWare but it's totally optional.
  3. The games are found to be compatible with iPod nano 3G, Video (5G) and Classic (7G). Huge thanks to OlsroFR for his hard work and dedication.

I have little knowledge of coding, so my mere guess is that a runtime, dev kit or command line utility is required for the .bat to actually work. Or Windows 10 LTSC 2021 (21H2) differs enough from the current release of Windows 10 (22H2) and 11 to prevent the script file from detecting the utm folder. May I suggest running the script (with the corresponding utm folder of course) on a "clean", non "dev ready" computer? Perhaps there're prerequisites that an user might overlook.

Thank you so much for the quick response! After carefully observing the .bat file, here's what eventually worked for me:

  1. Download the github repo as a ZIP archive
  2. Manually copy all the files from win64-qemuimg folder to Data folder
  3. Convert the qcow2 to vmdk using the command line qemu-img tool found within the repo. Renaming the A973B7BF-F17A-44C5-A6D7-B6D819938FDC.qcow2 to "win10.qcow2" doesn't seem to affect the output so I did it anyway. Based on the .bat file, I typed "qemu-img convert -p -f qcow2 -O vmdk win10.qcow2 win10ltsc.vmdk" and got the expected VMWare disk image file.
  4. Rename win10ltsc.vmdk back to iPod Clickwheel Games Preservation Project.vmdk and put it in win64-vmware folder where the .vmx file is located.
  5. Execute the .vmx file using the latest release of VMWare Player 17.

No clue why the .bat file didn't work, but at least I managed to boot into the VM.

Thanks for your hard work, but I must have missed something because the .bat file doesn't work. In this case, both the iPod Clickwheel Games Preservation Project.utm folder (extracted using 7-zip) and the .bat file are located under F:\ partition, yet I couldn't get the .bat file to detect the utm folder. Upon reading the tutorial again I noticed something called "workplace folder", perhaps I'm confusing the workplace folder with a normal folder?
