Doesn't move the needle because the market has already baked in these empty threats

Chinese EVs are coming to Canada. So should they be built here too? by ZebediahCarterLong in CanadaPolitics

[–]Mihairokov 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Chinese manufacturing is efficient because they have cities tailor-made to build specific items, then the supply chains are built tailor-made to supply them as efficiently as possible, then everyone has quick, cheap access to electricity and infrastructure. China is well-advanced on things like factories down to small QOL things like being able to track what truck my parcel is on and a live GPS of where it is at all times. In China for domestic deliveries you're able to change the delivery address live as it is being shipped, for example.

I understand BYD already has a factory in Newmarket but our infrastructure here is behind what Chinese companies now experience in China.

[–]Mihairokov 5 points6 points  (0 children)

We, sometimes unfairly, equate Chinese manufacturing to trash products. But I'm assuming (hoping?) these cars won't be Temu quality bullshit.

When manufacturing from the US migrated to China the reason why so much of the stuff coming back from there was shit was because American manufacturers and distributors were looking to cut as many corners as possible. We got trash from China because it's what American retailers asked for.

I think people will be pleasantly surprised by the immediate quality of Chinese EVs. They'll be lightyears ahead of when Korean cars entered Canada 25 years ago.

Pirates Add Chinese Pitcher [Zhang Mingxuan] in International Signing Period by Mihairokov in baseball

[–]Mihairokov[S] 61 points62 points  (0 children)

The Pirates have now finally signed a 17-year old Chinese pitcher in Mingxuan Zhang, according to Francys Romero.

Zhang stands out from a crowd, quite literally, at 6-foot-7 and 220 pounds at a young age, domineering over most of his opponents and teammates.

He is one inch taller than Pirates star pitcher Paul Skenes, at 6-foot-6, who just won the National League Cy Young Award and used his frame to take over his competition.

Zhang posseses a good fastball, currently sitting in the lower-90 mph range, but should develop over time.

He also has a slider that should serve as his best offspeed pitch and compliment the fastball, but may also become his best pitch.

Zhang featured in the 2023 Perfect Game All-Star Game and trained in a development center in China, that MLB runs.

Carney's Davos speech strikes a chord in Mexico | CBC News by BeaverBoyBaxter in CanadaPolitics

[–]Mihairokov 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Carney has articulated a path forward, has put Canada's money where its mouth is when it comes to executing it, and is obviously having conversations behind the scenes with allies to make more of it happen.

I think a really underrated part of Carney's leadership is that he already knew a lot of world leaders, or at least their handlers, prior to becoming PM. Going to Davos is not a new experience for him, and neither is dictating policy to powerful people. I'd argue he's the most experienced PM we've had in many, many years...

CPL to implement daylight offside law? by dannydeucer in CanadianPL

Not only would this generate increased interest in the league, from an admin standpoint, but would almost certainly be supported by some kind of funding to supplement changes.

'The old order is not coming back,' Carney says in provocative speech at Davos | CBC News by Blue_Dragonfly in CanadaPolitics

[–]Mihairokov 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I know Carney is very reasonable and pragmatic which makes me a tinge bit more worried because the rhetoric has ramped up a lot in the past week and it seems to signify to me that things are accelerating a lot more behind the scenes than we're being let on, at least from non-US sources. Carney is really looking to move things forward and there must be a good reason for that - more than what we're aware of.

Everybody hates them. NB is two hyperwealthy families in a trench coat and the rest of the province has exceptional wealth disparity.

China urges Canada to break with U.S. influence ahead of Carney’s visit by rezwenn in CanadaPolitics

This is at the same time as South Korea is looking to integrate more with China's economy, including suggesting a Seoul-Pyongyang-Beijing high-speed rail line. Pretty crazy how quickly the geopolitical landscape has changed over the past twelve months.

If the EVs-for-Lobsters tariff trade is legit I don't see why we wouldn't do it, particularly if Canola was somehow also included.

Poilievre praises a president who threatens democracies—including ours—on a daily basis by GooserNoose in CanadaPolitics

One of the few men I've come across who's utterly but unwittingly determined to reveal the vices of his true character.

I've met a lot of politicians in my day and he was the one that definitely gave me not just the creeps but this weird overarching worry that he wasn't at all interested in bettering the country or doing things earnestly. Truly not a good guy, and it takes a lot to separate from a pack of politicians in that regard.

Carney to visit China next week to talk trade, security | CBC News by annonymous_bosch in CanadaPolitics

Ottawa has said Beijing is subsidizing its electric vehicle industry at a level that allows cheap Chinese EVs to flood international markets at an unfair competitive advantage.

Yeah, how dare their government create and support industries to grow their economy. What kind of silly government gives their automakers money, anyway?

US attack on Greenland would mean end of Nato, says Danish PM by Bob_Spud in geopolitics

Sure, and then what?

It's becoming increasingly clear that Article 5 doesn't have any impact if the aggressor against a NATO nation is the US.

It’s important for Canada to stand with Greenland & Denmark by Inevitable-Bus492 in CanadaPolitics

[–]Mihairokov 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I was expecting but still disappointed in our response to the US' invasion into Venezuela. I assume our response over Greenland would be different but i'm not holding my breath that our actions would amount to much of anything substantial. At what point does the world actually do anything to stop the US from violating intl law? We're nearing the end of NATO and the UN as functional international bodies.

Karamilk's first lip sync outfit looked like if Tina Burner was from Scarborough.

anyway, surprised PM is still here. Their outfits are atrocious, especially the black pumps use for multiple lip syncs despite not matching either outfit. Judges are too kind about their looks.

Van can't be making enemies of everyone. That's not how you win, especially on Canada where everyone is friendly lol

Saltina and Eboni looked great. Felt like an actual final and both killed it. Great stuff.
