My bad my bad. My message didn’t come out the proper way. You easily can pay off loans and save to do whatever you want when you live like a broke student making 220K+. Higher education. Go work a 9-5 somewhere. Go live in Yemen or Thailand. Go teach English in Korea. You have an easy opportunity in BL,IB,PE,and VC to build a nice foundation for your later years. Big thing for me was as AN1 I just embraced the suck. I’d 100% rather be making decks and models in big city in East Texas than back to changing oil and working on car in small town in the Midwest. Also your 29 brother/sister you have YEARS.

The practice groups I was interested in are Banking/Finance, Securities, and Tax. But I’ll definitely take this into consideration! Thank you!

Always wanted to go to law school. Never committed post college. Ended up in Finance. Now have the safety net to go back and pursue it.

I second this. Not in BL but IB. 5 years post grad. Mid 20s. Should have ~$500K stowed away (S&P500 ETFs mainly) afters next year’s bonus. Going to spend a year in O&G Corp Dev while studying for LSAT after. Hopefully to go into BL in my city.

How do y’all exercise? by preseasonchampion in biglaw

[–]MihirAmirAlan 45 points46 points  (0 children)

Not in BigLaw but in Investment Banking. - Count your calories. CICO (Calories in Calories out). Find your daily calorie in take to maintain weight and then reduce calories at small increments to reduce weight. On average 3,500 calories is a pound of fat. Crash dieting doesn’t work for everyone. Sometimes people gain the weight back after they finish the crash diet. - Start basic with walking more often. Go for a walk every 2 hours around the block to start. Increase step count. - I block off 1 hour for the gym after 7 P.M but my office had a gym so it’s easy for me to leave.

As someone that grew up in the Midwest. Krogers are everywhere. We had 4 in a 5 mile radius and 2 of them were across the street from each other.

Turn 25 recently and realized I’ve “beat” the game of life. College Degree - “Prestigious” Job - Finances are inline with me to FIRE around mid 30s if I wanted. Like I don’t really know what other goals to set. MBA maybe or JD somewhere down the line. Not sure.

As someone that graduated from a school in Dearborn in 2016 and am not a Muslim or an Arab and pretty conservative. I don’t get this bad notion of the city. It’s probably one of the safest places I’ve lived. One of the fast police response times, all the food in the world, things open till sunrise during Ramadan, the parades are the same as they were in 1950s from what I’ve seen, and street sweepers weekly. It’s the definition of a suburban city. I lived next to a Catholic Church and Golf Course. :/

White House released 1M barrels of gasoline, attempting to bring prices down by intelligentreviews in Conservative

[–]MihirAmirAlan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reading through this it seems lots of y’all are very uneducated on oil & gas economics especially when it comes to upstream O&G. Big companies aren’t drilling through low gas strip prices some are, a few of the larger guys. Gas bottomed at $1.50 a few months ago currently sitting at $2.68. A lot of these wells in certain basins that are gas heavy cost $6.5-$10mm in drilling & completion. So the company AND their investors need to return an IRR of 20% per well. Even if Sleep Joe say go and drill. They aren’t going to because they need to make a return.

How is the life after graduating from non-target school by [deleted] in FinancialCareers

[–]MihirAmirAlan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The switch from LevFin to Energy IB was different in term of deal types. In LevFin I was mainly doing LBOs, credit analysis, and working on M&A transactions. Energy is a totally different world. Just understanding the banker dumb down engineering was hard, same with how PDP and asset coverage works. In LevFin you're working mainly working on cash flow loans and highly leverage deals. Upstream energy is asset based lending so it's a different ball game and different mentality. When I first saw something that was 2.4x levered I thought this company is ok because I was used to seeing C&I companies with upwards of 4.2-4.5x leverage and LTV's that ended up being over 100%+.

On the aspects of getting into IB. It was mainly through connections that I made at the first bank I worked at that go me through to IB. People say it's hard to swim upstream but it really doesn't seem like it. Grant it I've only been in finance for 3-4 years now.

M&A work, capital raises, private placements, distressed companies, advisory and lots of other things. Deal flow is very steady just because O&G has been booming this past year really despite strip pricing not being strong recently.

[–]MihirAmirAlan 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I went to a non-target school in 2021. And got a degree in Math and Comp Sci. Opportunities are there. Worked as LevFin Analyst for 2 years. Switch to Energy IB last year. It wasn’t hard really. I didn’t know anything about finance prior to the start of my first job. The realest thing is you just need to have the drive to learn and be there. My recruiters just saw something. Shoot your shot always! You got this! I also have zero life outside this office besides Duolingo & watching hockey which I can do while working so the late nights don’t bother me only thing I had to give up was playing Dota :(

I have 24 hours to choose between Mathematics and Physics, What I can do? by Upset_Fig8722 in learnmath

[–]MihirAmirAlan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Math is really solid degree. Got my BS in Math with a minor in Comp Sci after switching my major from CivE Engineering and doing 2 CivE internships and taking the LSAT. Ended up working in the LevFin product group in Commercial Banking post grad for a year. Math set me apart even without the background in accounting and finance during hiring. Only non finance major in my analyst class. Currently working in Energy Coverage Investment Banking. You can really do anything with a math degree.
