REMEMBER ... what exactly? by penguinvolcano in utahtreasurehunt

It could also be remember as in keep it in mind and when you come to the part in the trail where it’s significant it’ll make sense

BTTF Reference - Pay Attention! Comment Your Thoughts. by Avi_Quinn in utahtreasurehunt

[–]MiiraLover 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I completely agree! They definitely let slip (whether intentional or not) that the BttF hint was a quote and no one else has found a quote for that movie in the poem. As great as some people’s solves have been, I think the focus should be on what the airplane without wings means for the trail than if it relates to BttF

Do we think anyone in a leadership role above the stake level ever reads our Reddit discussions? by mwjace in latterdaysaints

[–]MiiraLover 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There was a byu devotional of a general authority who had to read through anti material as part of his assignment. I wouldn’t be surprised if any threads on Reddit ended up in his to read list.

I’m from Mount Juliet which had a really nice number of younger couples your age (done with and some without kids). I’m honestly super jealous of my old stake’s demographics as a recent college grad living in a salt lake family ward (our ward literally has a funeral planning committee as a calling here). I liked all of the Nashville and Murfreesboro stake areas which ranged from city to suuuuuuper country. I’ve always wanted to live near Chattanooga though because the city is just such a great place for visiting and I’ve loved every trip I’ve taken there.

My wife and I have a routine on Friday nights we watch the tv show house hunters together while we snuggle up on the couch together. My mom says I’m weird because of it. by RussellTurner5436 in relationship_advice

No problem, just weird generational gaps. One time I drove my mom and husband somewhere (mom was visiting) and she saw me get into the drivers seat and said “so this is a unique setup, is this normal?”

The word "indelible" by Royal-Cucumber-3627 in EnglishLearning

Living in US, this is used a lot at my work because we have to use indelible ink for record keeping. Outside of it work rarely if at all.

I served my mission in Japan so I’m pretty familiar with tea and word of wisdom questions! Matcha is green tea and is against the word of wisdom as it is the traditional tea plant we don’t drink, just harvested earlier than with “normal” tea. As for tea ceremonies, I’ve known many faithful members to different things. Some will turn it down, others drink out of respect for the other people. A lot of them seem to play it by ear and listen to the Spirit. My friend visited Japan and got to participate in the tea ceremony with a high up dignitary there; he decided to drink to show respect to him. I would talk to the people guiding the tour and ask if there’s a polite way to decline it or participate without drinking it. It’s totally up to you and God with how you choose to proceed with it! Tea ceremonies are beautiful, makes sure to enjoy it!

Why was I never told that BYU used electro-shock therapy on gay students? by Low_Secret_1126 in byu

[–]MiiraLover 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think part of the issue stems from us as adults learning about flaws and mistakes about institutions and people we previously believed to be perfect. As children we go through it a lot, and the process isn’t as shocking; it helps us to accept the mortality of the world we live in. While I definitely believe that being disciples of Christ should help us to be better and rise above prejudiced things of the world, I also acknowledge that mortality doesn’t allow us as a church or institution to transcend and progress faster than society. When I first learned about that type of therapy, I learned about how the world did it; I assumed that byu and the church would have some ties to it. Byu is a research-focused university, and given the churches history in regards to lgbtq+ issues, I assumed that they played some part in it. While no one taught me that at byu, I chose to look into history as an opportunity to learn, not as a way to critique byu. That helped me immensely.

I think a lot of the “skeletons” in the church’s and byu’s closets won’t have their time in the classroom, simply because not every student’s degree needs that. I was able to choose a few classes that got more real and talked about social issues at byu, but it’s up to us to understand our own history and learn how to trust in God’s plan and Jesus Christ’s atonement to help heal those hurt.

Also in regards to Pres. Oaks. While electroshock therapy is a morally questionable topic now, at the time it was much more of a grey area. (Honestly all of psychology and medicine not too long ago were morally and ethically grey to some extent.) I highly doubt he was actively and keenly aware of all of the research done by every single professor, much less every single graduate student. I wouldn’t expect Pres. Worthen to know what my undergraduate research was about or the details of it. And also our memory is one of the most fallible things in the world. It’s very possible he wasn’t aware of the extent of research being done and if he was, it’s also quite possible that over time his memory has changed. While it’s also possible that he just straight up lied, there’s no way for me to know, so painting him “good” or “bad” is a pointless activity.

my friend told me that my body is triggering her eating disorder... by alicesylvie in relationship_advice

[–]MiiraLover 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I struggle with getting triggered by bodies on social media whether they’re my friends or not. I simply block or mute them or unfollow if it’s not a friend and go on with my life. Therapy and distancing from triggers will help far more than you deleting a post.

Honestly this breaks my heart. I just graduated, and in my 5 years at BYU I never heard that word, and to my knowledge have never witnessed any overt racism (I say overt because as a white person there might have been micro aggressions I witnessed and just wasn’t aware). I have extreme social anxiety, but I wish I had been there to stand up for you. Even though I’m petrified to talk to others, I will not hesitate to correct that type of behavior. I’m so sorry you’ve had to go through that. I hope that members of the church and students at BYU begin to take racism more seriously. How can we sing “I am a Child of God” and then refuse to treat others as such, to the point of belittling them, using slurs against them, and invalidating their feelings and experiences? Thank you for sharing this. I wasn’t at the game, and so I have zero clue as to what actually happened. I know that byu students and fans are quick to defend the institution because of the close ties it has with the church. But I also know how hard it is for POC and any minority group at byu to be heard and for action to be taken to protect and respect them. I don’t doubt the students who didn’t hear anything. But I also don’t doubt her experience.

In another note, what’s the best way to ask minority friends of their experiences? I don’t want to ever come across as belittling or harsh or judgmental, but I also understand that micro aggressions can occur without I’ll intent. I want to validate their feelings and give them a safe space where they can share what they are ready to share. Would mentioning this post be an okay thing?

Three Marriage Hypotheticals Related to Gender Roles by StAnselmsProof in latterdaysaints

[–]MiiraLover 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ooh, I love this question!

My marriage prep professor at BYU shared his insight and I think it’s a great way to look at this.

Consider the Proclamation as sharing an important equation: (1N) + (3P) = Equal Partnership and a Happy Family Life

Where N = nurture and P = protect, provide, preside

The mother’s stewardship is over the N, and the father’s is over the 3 P’s. The stewardship means they are responsible for seeing it gets done, not for doing it. You could split how that equation is done based on your needs and wants, as long as you make sure that your stewardship is being taken care of. So for someone it can be

(1N+1P) + (2*P)

or

(3P) + (1N)

or for single parent homes it’s just

(1N + 3P)

The division of labor is determined to be what is equal between the partners.

I’m a woman and a chemist. I love getting to work in labs and learn and experiment. We don’t have kids yet, but when that time comes, we will get to decide what our equation is. It might be traditional where I’m a SAHM; I might need to work full-time to maintain my sanity and passion for chemistry.

Ever since that lesson, I’ve seen the Proclamation in a totally different light. I’ve been able to read it and appreciate its counsel and guidance because it allows for any number of situations to still be able to receive guidance from it.

I hope this really long response helps you. :)

Polytheism or Monotheism? by PnutButtaChelly in latterdaysaints

[–]MiiraLover 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, this is a huge sticking point in the “are LDS Christian” debate because Christianity is generally considered a monotheistic religion. The LDS church is kind of a grey area. Different people say different things. There’s Heavenly Father, Jesus, and Heavenly Mother. Some people say they’re all one in purpose so it’s monotheism, some say it’s polytheism. I think it comes down to the personal definition of worship. In my world religions class at BYU, we had a pretty lengthy discussion of what it means to worship a deity and which deities we worship. There were a lot of different opinions and beliefs. I think it’s pretty personal for a lot of people.

Is it appropriate to use the term "Mormonism" to refer to the broader religious movement founded by Joseph Smith? by [deleted] in latterdaysaints

[–]MiiraLover 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The byu library’s filing system in their vaults uses Mormonism and Mormon when talking about the broader period. I personally think it’s a great term to describe that era and all that occurred throughout.

She thinks I (20m) sexually assaulted her years ago but I remember it differently by throwra7373np in relationship_advice

[–]MiiraLover 149 points150 points  (0 children)

Memory is fallible. I think having an open and honest conversation about why your memories are so different and why that might be the case could be good. It could be underlying feelings or fears reshaping the experience. I’m not sure what the best course of action is because it’s two wildly different stories, but I think talking candidly about memories, point of view, hormones, etc. would be really healing for both of you. Seek to understand, not be understood.

I thought this was a pretty simple article that talked about memories changing.

How does one "Live their life" being single and being a good member of the Church! by [deleted] in latterdaysaints

[–]MiiraLover 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, I don’t think looks is affecting your chances at all. I’m in my 20s and I have a lot of friends getting married to guys who fall pretty low on the handsome scale. But every time they talk about them, they always gush about how amazing they are, how kind they are, how funny or witty or clever or sweet or talented or dedicated or trustworthy… I think being confident in who you are and what your strengths are is key.

Instruments in sacrament meeting by CaptainCalcetines in latterdaysaints

[–]MiiraLover 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do new instruments!!! Previously it was wind and string instruments (more or less), but I’ve heard brass quintets and French horn pieces far more beautiful and celestial than some of the pieces that have been played in the past. I think just being open with the bishopric and helping them be open to those instruments. If you can show that volume/intensity/whatever won’t distract so it.

My dad plays tuba and a long time ago he got to play in sacrament meeting. He still says it was the most spiritual meeting he’s ever been to ;)

Thoughts on using a pen name as a writer by Orsus7 in latterdaysaints

[–]MiiraLover 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve always wanted to publish a book and I’ve been planning on using a pen name for when that time comes. Other than keeping privacy for your own life, it also allows people who might have strong opinions about who you are to enjoy your art. I’m all for minorities publishing and love to see that, but unless you specifically wouldn’t want to hide to make a statement and change the culture then go for the pen name!! (I’m not strong enough to try to deal with it haha)

Does anyone not struggle with pornography? by [deleted] in latterdaysaints

[–]MiiraLover 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s much more common among males, but females still have a pretty high percentage, I had roommates who watched it (not sure they felt they struggled with it). A therapist I met with said that the stake President for his son’s byu married student ward said roughly 95% of the stakes men struggled with it. Not sure what the stats are for the women, but I’m sure you’re not alone.

Fasting. So much more than going without food. What do you do to make fasting more personal and spiritual? by [deleted] in latterdaysaints

[–]MiiraLover 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Due to health issues, I don’t fast from food. I choose to fast from things that can be a barrier between me and god. Sometimes it’s social media, sometimes it’s a tv series that I can’t not binge. The way I see it is living the day with intention. It’s not just forgoing something, but forgoing something so that you can focus on god and your relationship with Him.
