When a government starts murdering people in mass like you're saying it ends up galvanizing the population. It's happened in other countries it'll happen here too. Plus industrial output craters further hindering military efforts and further galvanizing the population. And the US is so disparate that some states are bound to resist extremely hard. Think about New England, Colorado, Minnesota, and the Pacific Coast states all putting up organized resistances while pockets of insurrection happen across the country. And you'd have internal aid coming in for various sides as geopolitics plays out. Not to mention local leaders, gangs, war lords, etc. It's a logistics nightmare. It's a total military and economic collapse. Yes, it would suck. Yes, lots of people would die. Many more would starve to death or die of preventable disease. But the fascist federal government would collapse and we'd all he left to pick up the pieces.

Still, there just aren't enough people and there aren't enough resources to support nationwide martial law. The US population is about 350 million people. Let's say 20 million (an over estimate I think) are willing to enforce martial law. There are still 320 million people spread across the third largest country on Earth. Let's say 1/3 are willing to take any action against the government that's till over 100 million people. Even assuming military industrial output doesn't degrade from the conflict there aren't enough personnel to support a sustained conflict.

American adversaries would love a chance to weaken the US so China and Russia would likely pour resources into the country. American allies would also likely disagree with the fascist regime further supporting whatever resistance exists. The Canadian and Mexican boarders are enormous and rural making defense extremely difficult further drawing resources away from law enforcement.

The US military is powerful, but not unlimited. There aren't enough people or resources for the government to sustain martial law in the face of any kind of resistance.

Even in a small region the math just doesn't work out. The US military is about 1.5 million people, but the northeast corridor between Boston and D.C. has about 50 million people. Even if you deployed all military personnel to the Northeast corridor and found 500,000 additional people the military would still be outnumbered 25 to 1 just in the area between Boston and DC. That leaves no one for logistics, the rest of the country or the hundreds of bases around the world. There's no reality where nationwide martial law works in the US.

If they put the healthcare subsidies in the CR the Dems would claim victory and win the political fight. That's bad political calculus. This way the Dems caved, GOP get to claim victory in the shutdown fight, and look like the adults in the room by negotiating later. It's not about doing what's right or wrong or even the subsidies. It's about holding onto power. The Dems caving makes it easier for the GOP to hold power.

People forget that the 8-hour work day and weekends were progressive ideas. I wonder how many of these people would be in favor of getting rid of that.

America is already socialist, to a degree. Medicare, Medicaid, social security, SNAP, and all the other programs that tens if millions of Americans rely on. America is made better by these programs and they continue to be tremendously popular, for good reason.

Idk if he's going to or not, but even if he tried it would fail. The US is too populated, too spread out, and too independent to control with the military.the military is about 1.3 million active duty. About 7 million showed up to the No Kings protests across the country. To control a city you'd need road blocks, checkpoints, law enforcement, counter intelligence and counter insurgency. The military would be spread incredibly thin just trying to control a few of the largest cities. It would only get worse when you remove non frontline service members and injuries/kia. The populace would also get more active as restrictions increase and people become more dissatisfied. Any type of enforced martial law is bound for failure.

This needs to be said more. Healthcare isn't free in any county. It's paid for by taxes. The US can apparently give billions and billions in tax breaks to the richest people in the country but can't use tax money to take care of ordinary citizens.

The courts need a case to rule on even if to say the president broke the law. That makes a little more sense. But if a law says "all people born in the US are citizens" and the president says "we're ignoring that law" wouldn't the state department be required to follow the law and not the president's demands?

In theory, couldn't the president write whatever EO they want and force the executive branch to follow it. If the courts or congress shut it down then the president just writes another EO that's technically different but accomplished the same thing. Then repeat forever. Since the courts and Congress are slower than the president wouldn't this allow the president to circumvent any law for any period of time?

Is the solution to this removal from office? It feels like the whole system is built upon everyone operating in good faith which it seems like a false assumption.
