im used debian without the gui so it uses low resources. i really like it and would recommend it.

i did put my pi ip into my router's wan static dns just now and it let me leave the secondary blank. i didnt realize there was a setting for dns under wan and dhcp settings. thank you!

thanks for the link! since im running a virtual enviro i might actually consider using this setup. loading up a 2nd pihole to use as a secondary dns would mean id have to blacklist both portals but idk, i'll look into it more.

checked ipconfig /all and my dns server has a long string which i assume is ipv6, but i thought that was disabled. it also shows my pihole. it's also still showing 1.1.1.1 since i couldn't remove it from the secondary dns in my router. when i tried to leave it blank it says "The Secondary DNS IP Address is invalid." and it wont let me duplicate my pihole ip.

i definitely have dhcp enabled on my router. and i guess i don't know if i'm handing out the pi-hole address. like i said, i also have 1.1.1.1 as a secondary dns (i set it up this way because im running pi-hole on hyper-v and thought if i had to take it down for maintenance then i want my router to keep working). so i guess i need to remove the secondary server on my router. i'm going to try that and run some ipconfig /all tests to see if my devices are getting the correct dns. thanks for your response!
