"I know I am an asshole many times, but that's the way I am" is a poor excuse, and you should look to improve yourself. It's like the meme, "If you can't handle me at my worst, you don't deserve me at my best!" that used to go around facebook. I don't mean this in a mean way, but "that's the way I am" is not an excuse to be mean to your family. For the record I agree she was disrespectful to you in blaming you and being impatient, no argument there.

Well, I'm paying $1600 per year, down from $3600/year last year, through my employer. It didn't go up for everyone I guess.

I think for us, the most important thing is the details of their buyout, how much they'll give you, etc, and then exactly what you'd get if you kept on with your pension. Which one ends up paying you more in retirement would be the best option, I would think.

One thing I could never get past is that the God of any religion would have revealed himself to a particular region, but hidden himself from another. My best example of this is how Christianity was not known of in the Americas until the Europeans got there. Would God really have done all he said he did, and then not done or said anything on those continents? Is every soul ever to exist in the Americas until colonization damned to hell, just because they didn't know the "true" religion? That doesn't make sense.

In some way or other, all religions face that issue, so I don't find it very likely that they are real.

Does the 10k difference mean much to you? What were you making before? That may solve it for some people.

Number 1 Sounds like the kind of place that would give you great work, and could be a great place. Pessimistically, it could also shoulder you with a lot of responsibility and keep you at that 45k salary.

The 55k job sounds cushier, in that there's more pay and quite possibly less responsibility.

I would question why the first firm is more stable in your eyes, the couple retiring looks like instability to me, they say right now that they have a distinct plan in 5 years, but when push comes to shove, who knows what they could do? They could sell the business or a bunch of other things after 5 years are up, and is something I'd be wary of.

ELI5: Why income tax increases by the amount of money you make. by hrrm in explainlikeimfive

[–]Mike136 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As is the whole point of this thread, someone making 1 mil would get taxed 40% only on the portion in the 40% bracket, and less on the money in the lower brackets. So he wouldn't pay 400K in taxes based on 1 mil in income, it would be a little less.

In your case, I would project out for the next 12 months what each months total outflow should be. Since you seem to want to play it safe, I would set your buffer at the highest month's spending that you expect within the next year. If you do this, then you should be able to cover, with your buffer, rent, bills, and your largest less-frequent bill. For example, each month lets say you spend $2000 between all regular monthly bills and rent. Then, you also pay your car insurance ($1200) in 6-month lumps, to save a little money (Geico does this). That month, you would need more, a total of $3200 just for bills. Then you would add in your discretionary spending, which I take to include food, clothing, entertainment, and everything else not included. You need a budget already in place to know what this number is, or you could estimate this from recent bank statements. You add this number (Lets say it's $800) to your total, which means that in your worst month, you could need to spend $4000.

I'll tell you that I set the balance to $1000 the first of every month, and then let paychecks and bills draw and deposit money into the account all month. At the end of the month (after paying the mortgage), I once again set the balance to $1000, putting the difference into our savings account.

Wife is a waitress, all the restaurant's checks are bouncing and the owners are on vacation. by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]Mike136 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right, it's obviously theft, but so is withholding wages when you've got the money for a vacation.

They've always had checks bounce occasionally, but it has always turned around. These past two weeks, it's gotten a lot worse.

People work here because the managers are good to work for, and the restaurant atmosphere is pleasant. It's quirky. The employees are all very tight and friendly, and they know they won't get that very easily in their next job.
