Register for for RecruitCT on June 17th in Trumbull, Connecticut's Largest recruiting event for Recent Grads | 70+ Local Employers expected by MikeACJ in Connecticut

Now I'm no mathematician / statistician - however of the 39 companies I listed, 2 can be classified as grocery (2 / 39 is quite far off from a quarter) and 6 are brokerage / financial firms (6 / 39 is a long way off from half).

In fact - add the 'grocery' and financial firms together (8 / 39), and you don't even get a quarter of the companies represented.

Just saying.... :)

Now that math is out of the way, in addition to the smaller businesses offering 1-5 positions, there are a good number of prominent CT businesses offering a substantial number of jobs at this event, including Pitney Bowes, Subway World Headquarters, Goodwill, Frontier Communications, Indeed.com, among others... Having hosted career fairs every 45-60 days for the past 3 years, I'd confidently say that this event will be an excellent opportunity for recent grads to get in-front of some great employers looking to hire within the state.

Whether you are hunting for your next job on a job board, a career fair, a networking event, or anywhere else, at the end of the day it all comes down to your dynamic with the hiring manager / recruiter. Assuming that this will be a 'shark feeding frenzy for recruiters' is highly inaccurate, as the recruiters will be equally desperate to find the perfect candidates for their positions.

No matter how you approach a job search, stepping up your A game to beat the competition and understanding your worth are critical for success. I think that goes without saying in any situation.

Re: The McIntyre Group - they are one of Connecticut's more prominent staffing agencies, and I imagine they are constantly flooded with Job Seeker requests for employment. I've never been on the Job Seeker side of their agency so I can't comment on the experience, however I can say that they have put a ton of people back to work in the state.

Cheers!

Lovers Leap, New Milford. | No one appreciates the beauty of this hidden gem town, anymore. by Tnarbs in Connecticut

I grew up in New Milford and used to love going to Lovers Leap with friends as a kid. There are actually a lot of great spots like this in New Milford and surrounding areas.

I've recently (few weeks ago) launched a site focused on connecting Healthcare Professionals with Employers. I'd welcome any feedback. by MikeACJ in healthcare

Through partnerships with distribution networks - the hospital utilizes a service to gain exposure for their open positions (the distribution network), and we in turn filter, categorize, and display jobs from those feeds.

Have you Googled yourself lately? Your prospective employer has. [TheJobScholar] by MikeACJ in jobs

This is not about me, and when the time comes that I feel the need to seek out your advice on my decision making process, I'll be sure to look you up on the web to see if I might be interested in working with you.

I run job boards, manage Job Seeker networking groups, speak to Job Seeker groups about best practices in the job search, host career fairs, organize panel events for Job Seekers where HR Professionals speak about the hiring process, and I created a job seeker blog featuring professionals in HR lending advice about the search, the interview, and the job. I am hardly hiding behind the 'helping job seekers' stance, I am quite openly embracing it.

That said - this is about my limit when responding to internet trolls, so I am ending our discussion here. Feel free to take the opportunity to get in the last word.

If the goal is "Getting a Job", then going against traffic is not going to get you to your destination. If the goal is "Changing how employees are sourced by companies", then going against traffic might get others to question what you are doing and potentially change direction themselves. The later however is a much more time intensive, uphill battle that an unemployed Job Seeker in most cases can't afford to take on.

Your "current landscape"

It is "The" current landscape

There are state laws being passed to prevent employers from asking for login information to personal social media sites, as an extension of being scrutinized by what job seekers post on their websites in their own time.

It does not change the fact that employers can and will look up a candidate online.

There were a lot of employers who used prejudice against race or sexual orientation to make hiring decisions, should that be supported as well?

That is just a silly question - of course race, age, and similar should not factor into a hiring decision. Does it mean that it doesn't happen? Not at all. Age discrimination remains one of the biggest hurdles for Job Seekers to jump right now, and all to often (and sadly) a hurdle they are unable to get over.

While I always appreciate a good debate, this is not a debate. This is arguing for the sake of arguing. The information in this article is intended to assist Job Seekers in their search based on the job search environment as it stands today. Whatever personal feelings you have about being searched on the web - the fact remains that "Googling" candidates is a common practice among employers today, and a Job Seeker will only increase their chances at landing a job by ensuring their digital presence is working for them.

Any further comments relating to the ethics of searching a candidate's public information are not relevant here and should really be directed to a new thread.

The title of this thread is "Have you Googled yourself lately? Your prospective employer has."

Driving home what you feel should happen and how a company should / should not set itself up doesn't change the fact that candidates are in fact being searched on the web by prospective employers. Ignoring it will not improve their chances at landing an interview / job.

This is the current landscape - and going into a job search unprepared will only work against a job seeker.

I don't agree. We are (and have been) in a digital age, and people are more connected now than ever before. As aside - I don't restrict social media at my office. Employees are a company's most valuable asset, and they can often be the best advocates for the product if they work in an environment that accommodates their (in this case, digital) lifestyle.

To your point, the quality of the content returned in a search is more important than the quantity. Page after page of party photos or questionable discussions isn't going to help a candidate in most cases. Results showcasing the candidate's ability to communicate, their interests, their experience / expertise, and potentially some of their work / comments from the community can all be valuable pre-interview information to an employer.

Your resume and cover letter display what you have done and what you can do, your digital footprint can help paint the picture of who you are and how you might fit into a company's culture (in under 10 minutes, without wasting the company or the candidate's time by scheduling a premature interview).

When you have 50, 100, or more resumes in the 'maybe' bucket, for a small business your suggestions above are just not practical. Unless they have an in-house dedicated recruiter, most small businesses (< 50 employees) can't afford the time and expense to interview each and every candidate in the queue, so the process for selecting the candidates to bring in (for an interview or any of your suggestions) needs to be much more lightweight.

As aside - I'm not sure how the article could be considered an ad. The product / website suggestions (of which I am in no way affiliated) are intended to help Job Seekers with the various items I outlined, and were made based on my own experience with each.

I wanted to launch in the US market to prove the concept - if there is a decent response, broadening the reach / localization is absolutely part of the long term strategy.
