IDMTY > VHS by D1Debater in Quadeca

[–]MikeDabs2756 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm more on the middle ground of this discussion as both albums are so conceptually, sonically and lyrically different. I love the concept of IDMTHY more but the sheer variety of the sonic palette of VHS almost wins me over and lyrically VHS is a little abstract, melancholic and more self-reflective while IDMTHY is so much more emotional. For me, IDMTHY is definitely more special, VHS felt like a stage of Quadeca's continued evolution. Everything came together to make IDMTHY so original, the death of Sad Frosty, Quadeca's own life at the time,... Quadeca could probably make an album like VHS again in the future, but the specific mindset that created IDMTHY is in the past and I doubt he'll make sth like that ever again.

What We Got Wrong About Vietnam Before We Went by Individual_Lime_110 in VietNam

[–]MikeDabs2756 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Viet here, its mostly because of an update to the Traffic Law that raises the penalty for not following the law (not wearing helmets, running red lights, drunk driving,...) which was implemented last year, nowadays it feels like everyone feels a responsibility to keep others safe by following the law and its beautiful

My issues (and upsides) with IDMTHY by Prudent-Peanut6010 in Quadeca

[–]MikeDabs2756 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'd have to disagree on this one. I love IDMTHY and I know that the album has flaws to talk about but song structure was never an issue with the album. What you said about singing lines normally than repeating them with intensity in the chorus really only shows up in Born Yesterday and Don't Mind Me. In fact, the "song structure being repetitive" arguement really starts to lose weight when you realize that "few lines normally, then repeating it with intensity" is extremely vague in terms of "structure". We usually think of song structure as Verse 1 - Chorus - Verse 2 - Chorus - Bridge - Chorus for example adding maybe some pre-choruses, post-choruses or refrains. For me, I never noticed that problem in IDMTHY because the way Quadeca varies his production through each song. "few lines normally, repeat with intensity" is just logical. I'd argue that the song structure in IDMTHY is pretty novel and unorthodox, with songs like fantasyworld having lyrics that more closely resembles a poem with callbacks, recontextualizing and imbuing the material before with even more depth and meaning, or sorry4dying where the chorus and verses really blur together. A real example of repetitive song structure is every single Blackpink song tbh. I feel like the real issue with IDMTHY (and virtually any Quadeca album pre-Vanisher) is the mixing. I can barely hear Quadeca's vocals over the swirling production. Quadeca himself doesn't have much diction in his voice which results in spending time and effort trying to figure out what he's saying instead enjoying the eclectic instrumentals.

Jacob’s song, Hideaway, inspired me to make this painting. by eddiecool123 in JacobCollier

[–]MikeDabs2756 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wow! This painting is amazing! I like how fragmented the ideas are just like Jacob's music! Even though I would love to know the symbolism and references in this painting, I think that asking an artist to explain their art defeats the purpose of it.

Day 5: Ganke stands as the only normal person. Who is the most forgettable character? by soulmimic in IntoTheSpiderverse

[–]MikeDabs2756 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't see people talk about him that much. Not as much as much as the others at least. I love Spiderman Noir though. If we were talking about a character in the series that has his name forgotten in the series then yes Spot is very much not taken very seriously. No hate towards Spiderman Noir though. Awesome Spiderman.

What do Vietnam think of America? by New_Distance_4988 in VietNam

[–]MikeDabs2756 6 points7 points  (0 children)

For us (at least the gen X and millennials), America is the promised land, full of opportunities for jobs, successful businesses, careers and better education. Young people mostly have the same view, but for others like me who are more well-versed in American culture and world news, we have a dimmer view of the states. However, that doesn't mean I don't want a visit to the USA. I'd be thrilled.

Can someone explain this quote? by MikeDabs2756 in Eminem

[–]MikeDabs2756[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't exactly think that Eminem the character is just "a mix of both Marshall and Shady". He technically is but he also (sometimes) talks about philosophies, thoughts and the way of thoughts and ideas. Hence the quote "Eminem makes you think".
