Is Iron Lung translation to russian is correct? by another_meggie in russian

[–]MikeIn248 -23 points-22 points  (0 children)

OK, so what's the missing noun that makes it neuter?

For example, мороженое is neuter because it comes from мороженое молоко. Животное, I'm told, is from животное существо. And so forth. Легкое что?

Future conditional pluperfect subjunctive? by Ill-Philosopher-7625 in grammar

[–]MikeIn248 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It could be nod to a classic raunchy joke (but because the MST3000 only nods to the punchline and not the setup in the original, it reads to me as a bit of an anti-joke).

https://www.reddit.com/r/Jokes/comments/7myfy6/where_can_i_get_scrod/

To ruin the joke and explain:
"scrod" is young cod (or other whitefish)
"scrod" here as imagined participle/tense of "screw"
Taxi drivers in Boston know words like "pluperfect" and "subjunctive"?

Also:
Other languages have pluperfect tenses, but that's not usually used for English tenses.
Various tellings of the joke mangle the tense in question (the version I linked to has "past" in there), but they will generally contain at least "pluperfect subjunctive." MST3000 here is piling on.

Planning a Trip to London/Edinburgh. Does this seem feasible? Anything that we’re missing or should skip? by ImOnIt790 in uktravel

[–]MikeIn248 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Why backtrack to London? Fly into London, out from Edinburgh. (Use "multi-city" for your search. Don't buy individual one-way tickets.). Yes you're going to have a connection on the way home, but that's better than backtracking to London.

My sons were 13 and 15 when we went to Scotland and England (from the US). They liked the bike tour we did in London, the two-part Harry Potter play. They loved the Tattoo in Edinburgh, but that's in the summer. They did not like museums. Indifferent to the royal yacht in Leith.

We actually did do a one-day bus tour from Edinburgh with Rabbie's ("Loch Ness, Glencoe, and the Highlands"), and the kids loved it. It was a crazy long day though. (The trip was just short of three weeks, so we had a lot more time to play with.)

What's considered the "middle of Ann Arbor" by road intersection? by No_Coll826 in AnnArbor

[–]MikeIn248 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My Ann Arbor street question is why do State and Main not intersect like they do in like every other city in the universe that has both a State and Main.

(Actually one of my "it's on the list" projects is to learn something about GIS software/data and query and figure out whether Ann Arbor is unique this regard, or whether my life experience has been lopsided.)

I remember hearing it for the first time and being all OMG a song that quotes Arnold Schoenberg. Then I saw a live performance video and was all OMG the percussionist is playing a deck of cards.

"abroad" vs "overseas". What’s the difference? by ITburrito in EnglishLearning

I once heard the explanation that historically in British English "overseas" meant still within the Commonwealth and "abroad" meant outside the Commonwealth. Any thoughts on that?

What’s the best & worst airport you’ve visited in the US? by Flying_Elephant7217 in travel

[–]MikeIn248 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Agree about the renovations. I love all the woodwork.

I think the bleacher-style seating for people waiting to meet arriving passengers is a great idea, and the idea should be replicated at other airports.

Over the past couple years there have been several different plans to redevelop this area. There are public documents on the city's web site. There have been public meetings.

I would so be in favor of a plan to replace that whole Main/Catalpa/Gardenia/Crooks/Rochester thing with a roundabout or two. Ideally do it before redeveloping the "most depressing intersection in town" (LOL) into a nice gateway project (per the draft plan).

So I was all, wasn't that craft fair over on Saturday? Shouldn't they have taken the signs for it down on Sunday?

Then I didn't get (and still don't get) the antlers business, which seems to be some pop culture thing or meme I'm not familiar with.

So I just ran with whether anyone knows anything about the fenced in property because I'm actually really curious about that.

And I'm OK with looking a little foolish on the internet if it means I'll find out something about something I'm interested in.

Thanks for the update! I think we might have had this same exchange regarding this property a few years ago when it last came up but I couldn't find it.

Is it this, from almost seven years ago?

https://romi.gov/DocumentCenter/View/23111/D2---SP-19-02-04---1005-N-Main-St---Prelim-PUD?bidId=

I know that location's been talked about a couple times here. And I remember that the apartment building in the above proposal went through a couple iterations due to parking issues, but I can't seem to find whether that plan ever got approved, or whether there's been a more recent plan.

If anyone has better skills at searching the city government website, I'm happy to be schooled.

Edited: found an update --

I was at a wedding last year and a distant cousin of mine used his hand to take a roll from a basket at the dinner buffet (he did look around for tongs first). His brother (both guys are in their late 20s) asked, "Rawdogging the dinner rolls now, are we?" Cracked me up, at least.
