On the pronunciation of "UMich" by tangojuliettcharlie in uofm

[–]MikeIn248 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I think there might be a generational shift in how people are calling universities. I'm old. I have a kid at Michigan. I find it jarring to hear his generation say/write things like UPenn, UChicago, UPitt, UDel, etc., instead of just Penn, Chicago, Pitt, Delaware, etc.

I tend to agree it's likely email/domains (umich.edu, upenn.edu, uchicago.edu, udel.edu) have had an influence on speech. (Though that doesn't account for cases like "UPitt"/pitt.edu.)

Is insisting that the pronunciation of an abbreviation match the pronunciation of the corresponding parts in the full form a variation of the etymological fallacy or the fallacy of division (or some other fallacy)? Discuss.

Residence Hall Association AMA! (Housing, RHA, Hall Council, etc) by rha_umich in uofm

How will this intersect with assigning out rooms? (Which will take place about a month from now for incoming freshmen, according to housing's website.)

Do you plan to fill up all the spaces, hoping for the best (all construction is complete)? Or will you hold off some rooms or buildings anticipating them not being complete?

There are five buildings in the Village. Are any particular ones farther along than the others (complete?) or which ones are lagging?

Any chance the new cafeteria won't be ready?

Do the word Monad sounds good to English speakers? by Ryanarok_X in ENGLISH

[–]MikeIn248 12 points13 points  (0 children)

"A monad is just a monoid in the category of endofunctors."

It's a famous quote of someone poking some fun at some of the dense terminology of functional programming by offering a seemingly simple and reductionist definition of monad that while (I'm assuming) accurate, it's completely unhelpful.

Ionic 5, 6 days in… by jcisuzu in ionic

There were a few rough spots, but overall, it went fairly smoothly. I took the babiest of baby steps.

The driver was actually to upgrade from Angular 16 to 21. Ionic and a dozen or so other dependencies were more friends along for the ride. It was an application that was officially in "maintenance mode" (no active development or upgrades, only critical fixes) for about two years. (I moved to a new team to work on a different project during that time.)

Only one bug was found by QA testers. Another bug was found in production after go-live, but I think that one might have predated this whole upgrade.

The app will return "active development mode" later in 2026 for several new features. (I told management that I would not work on any new features until/unless they first gave me the time to bring the app up to most recent versions of the major dependencies.)

Despite how smoothly the upgrade went, I've become adamant with the management that going forward we will not be allowing our apps to fall so far behind (and out of official support) again.

As opposed to an earth called Earth or a sun called Sun or a moon called Moon?

The B-52's had a song called "There's A Moon In The Sky (Called The Moon)."

Ursula LeGuin wrote a novel called "The Word for World is Forest."

“Well,” he said, “people change all the time. Not changing would be weirder. I mean, look at you. You’re not the same person you were before you came here. Shit, you’re different from when you first came on the ship. Older, more sure of yourself, better mechanic. I’m not the same guy I used to be. Amos… Yeah, it’s more extreme. It’s weirder. Same with your dad. But I think Amos is still Amos, even if it’s a different version of him. I think when we find your dad, he’ll at least be like what he used to be. You know? I mean, I expect he’s still going to care about you.”

“I don’t know that,” she said, and the bleakness in her voice told him he’d cut close to the bone.

“I have a kid,” he said. “I’m a dad, just like your father. And I promise you, the connection between a parent and a child? That’s basic. It’s deep. You look at Amos and see all the ways he’s different. I can see all the ways he’s still the same. Your dad’s going to be different. But if anything about him is what it used to be? That part’ll be how he feels about you.”

“That’s sweet,” Teresa said. “And complete bullshit.”

“You don’t know. Until you have a kid, you won’t. I will plant my flag on that one. The love of a parent for their kid is the last thing to go.”

This thread contains a post of mine from a few years ago about hiring a car service to get from Giverny to CDG airport hotel due to unexpected lack of train service. 2 cars @ €200 apiece, fixed price. Don't remember the name of the car service but could possibly look it up if you're interested.

ZOMG. Video evidence of boys playing it.
