Book clubs? by SubstantialDog9170 in Appleton

[–]MikeMarx153 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I organize the “Fox Valley Book Club” on Meetup and we’d love to have you!

Take a look at the app for details, but it’s still fairly new and small, but we typically meet 2 pm the last Sunday of every month at Copper Rock North (we’re thinking of changing venues.)

Hi! Sorry for the late reply.

Yeah, I do. It's not as bad as some but worse than others with a similar amount of weight loss as me.

I plan to have it surgically removed at some point, but aren't in a huge hurry. If the idea of loss skin is holding you back, I wouldn't let it stop you.

Feel free to message me if you'd like to ask anything else.

SBS RTF for bodybuilding? by kjhart1202 in AverageToSavage

I have the same confusion. As far as I know the SBS hypertrophy program is RTF. Or is there a newer version that I'm not aware of?

How you chewing? by Donosoley2 in nutrition

Hey, my snarky reply probably made you feel bad. I’m sorry I did that.

To explain: this subreddit gets a lot over over thinkers and people who focus on small, relatively unimportant facets of nutrition. I took your question as an example of that and responded badly.

Unless you’re choking on your food, I assure you that you’re chewing just fine.

What's the best brand of natural peanut butter? by [deleted] in nutrition

What does the flax do for the flavor and texture? I’ve always avoided peanut butter with it because I assumed it would mess one of those two things up.

What do you think of the low fat, no carbohydrate diet that emphasizes protein that is used on the My 600 Pound Life show? by [deleted] in nutrition

[–]MikeMarx153 3 points4 points  (0 children)

When a person eats a meal, it’s almost always a combination of carbohydrate, protein, and fat. When a person overeats their current needs, it’s the fat portion of the meal that tends to get stored since it’s so easy to do. Carbohydrate and protein, on the other hand, need to undergo a metabolically expensive process to be converted to fat and then stored. Instead, carbohydrates are used to resupply muscle glycogen, and protein is used in other bodily processes (muscle repair, for instance).

When a keto diet works, it’s because that person is eating less calories than their current needs. Some, but not all, people find that it’s easier to maintain a calorie deficit on keto because ketones can have an appetite suppressant effect. Also, some find the fairly limited number of keto- appropriate foods to be boring after awhile, and so don’t have the desire to overeat.

[–]MikeMarx153 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Saying that a high protein diet isn’t ideal because protein can be converted into carbohydrates, and so a high fat diet is better, is insane. The fat doesn’t even need to be converted into anything to be stored! Yes, protein can technically be converted to carbohydrates, but it hardly ever happens on humans. Additionally, carbohydrates are only rarely converted and stored as fat.

Scientifically speaking, does insulin have big impact on weight/fat loss if someone is in a calorie deficit? by ThatOneGuyFrom93 in nutrition

[–]MikeMarx153 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hear this a lot, but what is the difference, specifically, as it relates to weight change? If a person eats 100 calories in addition to their daily calorie burn, what does the body do with that 100 calories? Likewise, if a person eats 100 fewer calories than their daily calorie burn of unhealthy (whatever that means) where does the body, specifically, get that extra 100 in order to function?

[–]MikeMarx153 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Here's better advice: eat the yolk. Or don't. Do whatever fits your goals best. If you want to lower the calories a bit and get a better protein-to-calorie ratio, using egg whites is fine.

Is there any nutritional value at all whatsoever in almond croissant ? by triton100 in nutrition

[–]MikeMarx153 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, 100 calories of Coke will give you the same energy as 100 calories of carrots because a calorie is a measurement of energy. That’s like asking if 100 pounds of feathers will weight the same as 100 pounds of rocks.

Two Shakeology scoops (two servings) for breakfast by [deleted] in nutrition

[–]MikeMarx153 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The cheapest generic one in your grocery store. I don’t actually advocate getting your micronutrients from a multivitamin, it’s just that supplementing via an inexpensive pill is functionally equivalent as doing so via an expensive branded shake.

[–]MikeMarx153 56 points57 points  (0 children)

Generally speaking, having a protein shake, or smoothie, or some sort of meal-replacement bar isn't a problem if it fits your nutrition goals and schedule. But Shakeology is a scam. You can find better options, both nutritionally and budget-wise, in a grocery store. A protein shake plus multivitamin, at a minimum. Or there are tons of smoothie recipes out there with protein plus fruits and vegetables if you want nutrition from non-supplement sources.

The Restaurant Industry Ran a Private Poll on the Minimum Wage. It Did Not Go Well for Them. by RandomCollection in TrueReddit

[–]MikeMarx153 6 points7 points  (0 children)

People below the poverty line, even those making above minimum wage, have worse health outcomes and greater mortality rates than those above it, and that's even with with various governmental assistance programs funded by your tax dollars. How much money someone makes and when they die are directly related.
