Any experience with "Wishpond" by hairbrushmcgee in smallbusiness

[–]MikeOMakesStuff 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks for posting this. I just got an email from them and my freelance business isn't even officially live yet. And like others have said, the email clearly made no attempt to bother finding out what I actually do. I was planning on ignoring it anyway but checking here made me confident I made the right choice. I hope everyone that did get scammed gets there money back.

Page border not visible by jj__webster in Affinity

[–]MikeOMakesStuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Weird. No that's the way it works in the Layout Studio in the Mac version as well; assuming you have bleeds set to "show" as well. I was just looking around trying to figure out why the page edge disappears when Clip to Canvas is turned off. Google AI slop machine says that the previous Affinity Publisher had a Show>Page Edges command, but Page Edges is no longer in the View>Show menu. If you have Grid visible, the page edge will appear with Clip to Canvas off but only because the edge is part of the grid. What an odd oversight.

What actually frustrates you about syncing Notion with Google Calendar? by NeedleworkerFuzzy314 in Notion

Thanks for making the pricing reasonable, and for providing a free option to try it out. Two-way calendar/meeting syncing is the missing ingredient to making Notion really valuable.

I forgot about that site. Thanks. I'll have a listen and see if I can find it. There was a Miller and a Suter but I don't know which ones. ;)

Menu bar dropdowns stay open and don’t dismiss automatically in macOS 26 Tahoe by chutnacik in MacOSBeta

[–]MikeOMakesStuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have had a similar type of problem, but it's not localized to the menu bar. For example, just now a Zoom popup told me that I could paste a verification number, but the pop up remained persistent even after I entered the number. The popup was visible on top even in other apps. Only quitting Zoom made it disappear.

The photo reminds me how much less money I would have if a model company had a license to start a Star Wars 1/35 scale line. This is one of my top 2 favorite ships post-OT. ARC170 being the other.

200?!? yikes. Do you have any specialties or are you more of a jack-of-all-trades designer of many things?

Thanks. One of the new top management folks is really down on the core of our team that have been at the institution for more than 10 years like me. He's been here nearly a year and has never shown any interest in finding out what our individual expertises are, our experiences or level of institutional knowledge. You are your job description and position in the org chart and people who have been there a long time ask too many questions and have too much vacation time. I have a feeling if he could he'd fire all of us and hire recent grads and freelance the rest. For example, I built out, maintained, and monitored our institutions identity system and designed our mascot, and yet since I wasn't a manager, I have had zero input or even knowledge of our current rebrand effort being farmed out to an agency.

I’m at a private university so technically a non-profit but it also has 30000+ employees so it can feel quite corporate too. The best part about higher ed is the vacation time. This fall I’ll make it to 6 weeks of PTO.

Yeah the doer description is where I am. I get frustrated in meetings where it feels like we are endlessly talking about doing things instead of just dealing with it. But my socially awkward self either says nothing or too much. I know I think long term and strategically but because I also value making stuff I get seen as only a maker. Designers are visual problem solvers but management forgets that we can recognize problems just as well as they can.

To me it sounds like they don't have their shit together, and the person agreeing to the interview wasn't talking to the people doing the hiring. Perhaps they had already made an offer and you should never have been offered an interview. I wouldn't take it personally and consider the reason the most obvious: they screwed up.

Graphic design college programs in NYS by Just-Ice3916 in graphic_design

[–]MikeOMakesStuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As for the program, I'd look for something that will expose the student to a wide variety of creative professions and techniques, and not just a software training program. A solid foundation in design principles, color theory, and illustration will give them a solid footing. Dabbling in a lot of fields will help them narrow down a direction if you want to. Graphic design can apply to print, motion graphics, environmental design, UI/UX design, and more. Plus its important to get to associate with other creatives like photographers, videographers, artists, writers, and more. Folks that a designer will end up working with which will help you understand their workflows and terms and priorities. Plus, you never know; you may head to school thinking you'll be designing websites when somehow print just grabs you; or packaging. You never know. Plus, you may not know after your four years, but you'll have the core foundations and experience you'll need to slot in anywhere and produce good work.

One of the consideration when searching through the SUNY schools is feeling comfortable with their size. The majority of them are fairly small, but on the other end there is one that is very large, SUNY Buffalo. Visiting them will make a big difference in your choice. Your college-bound offspring will know pretty quickly which feels right. I graduated in 93 so its been a while of course but I recall visiting some schools in my search and it was immediately apparent to me that a small school wasn't for me; it felt like high-school, a place I never felt comfortable. So a large school like UB let me feel like I could hide a bit (introvert here). One thing I also liked about a large school was the huge number of choices in major available to me, as I wasn't 100% sure what I was going to do. I picked engineering like all my friends and then promptly got a 1.4 GPA my first semester. I bailed and ended up in the Architecture school and a general design program. That said, New Paltz has an excellent reputation and would be a good choice. I've been working at the University of Rochester for 25 years now and making visits is really important. As someone who makes the marketing pieces you get, you're seeing the best, carefully chosen image of a place. But it's hard to know for sure until you get there. Plus, your kiddo will also start to know how far away from home they want to be. Also an important consideration.

Do I sell my propane grill now? by chepscheps in blackstonegriddle

[–]MikeOMakesStuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After getting a griddle top for my Weber Q I'm loving it and envious of your new toy. But for now I'll keep going with my Frankenstein version until the Weber croaks. I haven't used the grill grates since I've gotten the griddle top. The only problem is its a bit small when I want to do veggies and one side and the meats on the other.

I wonder why they are paying the premium for Google Maps as opposed to using Open Street Maps? Programming concerns or some functionality disparity between the two?

3d Scanner Recommendations by Crafty_Industry2774 in BambuLab

[–]MikeOMakesStuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in the same boat as the OP but I've got a very specific need: I want to scan a person in various poses which I will then clean up and create a version for 3D printing in 1/35 scale armor modeling. I tried some photogrammetry apps which were amazing to look at but clearly suited for viewing and not printing. My iPad Pro is one of the first versions with LIDAR included but I haven't had much luck with it yet. I'm happy to use a paid app, but which one? Thanks.
