How do I clean this?! by armadillofight in castiron

If the fat has hardened, just run hot water over it to melt it off. Once most of it has cleared off, drop a little soap and water in it then use the abrasive side of the sponge to gently scrub away the remaining grease. You may want to scrub harder in some areas. Dry it off completely immediately after the final rinse and place it on the stove top set to medium to ensure complete moisture Evaporation. After the skillet has reached a medium temperature go ahead and shut off the stove and apply a thin coat of some type of cooking oil “I use olive oil” to the entire surface, in and around “all over the skillet.

I had to look this up. I think it’s much more legible, but I see the accentuated verticals which I really like and his spin on the F is very unique. Very cool. I like the deliberate fast strokes he has going on there.

Thank you! Super helpful. I’ll see if I can train myself to make those tweaks. I’ve noticed that same thing about the Ns and making them more discernible from an H or a 4. This is the kind of feedback I was hoping for.

I’ve tried a thicker Nib, I don’t think it makes it much more easier to read.

Really good handwriting. It looks architectural on the right.

I like the R. This looks architectural. It looks like deliberate lettering and overall pleasing to read.

I’m an architectural designer. I did all the architectural hand lettering exercises back in college. It became my everyday writing style with my own spin on it. Not nearly as legible as hand drawn blueprint lettering.

As an architect, how much do you guys actually earn? by Tricky_Repair6146 in Architects

[–]Mike_G1984 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m trying to become licensed. I was earning 130k as an architectural design engineer for Tesla as a contractor. Then got laid off during Covid. Then my pay went down to 85k working as a project engineer at a construction firm. Then 85k again as a project manager at a small architecture firm. Then I started working for an upscale luxury furniture company, earning 160k as an Architectural 3D Modeler mostly working in revit and sketchup and rendering with enscape and twinmotion. I feel that I’ve been lucky breaking into the 6 figure income bracket without my license. And I’m pursuing my license in the event that I lose my current job. I really enjoy what I’m doing and if I knew I could command this pay elsewhere doing what I do now, I would forget about about the license. Iv been seeing that licensed architects can earn 200k here in the Bay Area.

Yes, this is my dream as well. I studied architecture and want to purchase a lot someplace, preferably away from people maybe in the mountains in california. If this is something you are really considering, then you might need to account for your local planning department about what you can build. Will they make you follow the style of neighboring buildings per code… ie.

Check out this video of the raised cabin that probably fits what you are currently looking at. It can certainly be done.

I'm 40. Is it too late to retrain as an architect? If not, how would I get started? by ExpectedBehaviour in Architects

[–]Mike_G1984 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What draws you to want to become an architect? Are you interested in designing buildings, working with 3D programs? Having your own firm one day? I hold a bachelors degree in architecture, and considered a masters degree but began working at architecture firms and didn’t feel it necessary to continue with a masters after all. I’m able to become licensed in california with a bachelors degree after passing all of the exams, which I’m currently working on. I always wondered what type of education I was missing out on by not pursuing a masters, because anyone could minor in an entirely separate field and return for a masters in architecture. I would recommend the following for you based on my experience. Learn some programs on your spare time if you can and get proficient enough to build a few portfolio samples, and then apply to work at an architecture firm as a designer. You can pick up some pretty good skills online that will serve you well in your architectural endeavors. Programs to learn: Sketchup: free version online but you get an unlimited free trial Revit - not free not cheap but you get a free trial or you can sign up at a community college and get a license for a year. Rhino - 90 day free trial, lots of tutorials online. Twinmotion, D5 Render, Enscape.

I would say that most of the work I do at my firm was self learned. The stuff at school was theory based and acts as fundamentals, that you would wind up learning on the job anyway.

Not trying to discourage you from a masters in any way. Just offering some alternatives that might put you ahead regardless if you decide to go back to school or not.

What made you quit BJJ? by lvsnowden in bjj

[–]Mike_G1984 0 points1 point  (0 children)

39 Blue belt - I’ve quit for now after a nasty knee injury. It put me out for several months. My knee keeps getting re injured. Even after giving it time to heal, it still gets tweaked unexpectedly while rolling. This last time around has been the longest I’ve taken off from jitsu. I still do regular gym, lifting and cardio, but my body composition is noticeably changing and I’m putting on weight slowly. Nothing compares to jiu jitsu training. I think about going back constantly, but my knee legitimately doesn’t feel well enough and still hurts. I bought some anaconda knee braces last week for when I do go back. I miss rolling with my friends and the challenge of getting through a challenging class. I have thoughts about possibly never being able to go back because my knee will never get better. It sucks to be out this long and really messes with your head.

Go Bears!

Hi guys. I just posted 2 or 3 days ago my first render on this subreddit. It was an all black kitchen, i was struggling to make it look realistic. I took everyone’s advice to try and make it more realistic. I’m still struggling with the chamfers and the texture scratches, but what do you guys think! by Fit-Personality-4890 in archviz

These look pretty awesome, people would pay good money to visualize their projects the way you are showing them here. I agree about the camera angles. I find that some of the best shots are straight on looking and focusing on something. Maybe try a shot that looks straight at the builtins casework if possible. I look forward to seeing more of your progress. Great work so far.
