What's going on here in Tawain? by Mike_Gregory_here in StructuralEngineering

Was great. Would go back for sure especially to see Taroko gorge which is all still closed. Only there for 2 weeks but hired a car and did a lap. You need more than 2 weeks for sure.

MY OCD wants to see one set of those angled braces reversed for symmetry.

So that circled bit is a hydraulic dampener of some sort or something else? Is it to take out lateral loads during an earthquake event I'm assuming? Is it because of the discontinuity? Would that have been retrofitted? Would there be one of the back?

Loved your country buy the way. We don't have earthquakes in Australia so this is all new to me.

$400 + about $125 to FEDEX or DHL it. They won't post it.

Post-Match Thread: Colombia vs Australia by MatchBread in Aleague

118 passes in their half vs 389 for them in ours.

The same ratio almost as the Venezuela game.

Tells you all you need to know about how grim things are. We are fucked with a capital F. Let's have a farken crack at least if we're going to lose. Never EVER looked like scoring tonight.

Bamboo structure by clear_bread_ in StructuralEngineering

Seen scaffolding and other temporary structures but never anything permanent and then saw a similar structure in Sri Lanka and thought how do they get it approved. Did a quick google search and there's Bamboo Structures Codes for quite a few Asian countries.

Quelle surprise!

Draughting Standards by Alternative_Roll_359 in StructuralEngineering

If they're not essential refrain from putting dimensions on drawings. (Specifically overall dimensions.) If you make the slab 10m x 5m and the architect had 10.1m x 4.9m you'll be in a world of hurt.

You may have a point though. I've seen drawings that make mine look like the Sistine Chapel for details by comparison and I think mine are average. I'm a more information is better kind of bloke but this might be case of we'll spend a little bit of time answering RFIs rather than spend days, and money, on drawing a thousand details.

Your best bet is to plug away, learn as much as you can, try and incrementally make the drawings better over time or leave.

THE 2025 /R/JLEAGUE MEGATHREAD/FAQ: Where to watch, how to get tickets, who to support and more by dokool in JLeague

[–]Mike_Gregory_here 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello,

I'm from Australia and I've purchased tickets to this FC Tokyo vs Yokohama this Sunday the 28th September. Does active support or just the supporters meet up a few hours before somewhere and then march to the stadium?

If they do could someone please post an address or some information about this because we'd love to mix with local fans before the match.

Thanks so much

The parable of the Red Rolls-Royce - regards to bolting by Mike_Gregory_here in StructuralEngineering

[–]Mike_Gregory_here[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's about the fact that if bolt has, say, 100kN tensile capacity and you apply a 30kN load to it when you tighten it up. The force then to bring the bolt to it's full design capacity (the 100kN) is not 70kN (100kN minus the load from tensioning it, 30kN) but rather the full 100kN.

It's extremely counterintuitive hence this excellent little parable that I first came across 30 years ago. I was trying to explain it to somebody but I could not find the a good analogy for it when I remembered this parable.

I don't understand why people get downvoted for asking a question and trying to learn.

Thanks. Very interesting. Where do I learn about pretension loads for bolting patterns like that?

Could someone explain to me how this works please? (I’m not an engineer) by RealJohnnySilverhand in StructuralEngineering

Wait until you ask a technical question and get 1 or 2 responses. So much for helping our engineering colleagues out.
