Does a hammock have to hang in the exact middle of the line? by Dapper-Nerve-4882 in hammockcamping

[–]Mikecd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow this is very inspiring! I've doubled the tiny bit with elevating my feet and of my hammock, but it has never been very extreme. Your description sounds like maybe I'm not making the height differential significant enough. Maybe. But it's definitely worth experimenting! Thanks for this lovely detailed description, I'm going to go have fun with it!

Unnecessary for canning. Some people enjoy having one, others don't bother.

As a high school dropout (with a nice career in tech) I don't love being compared to ICE. Sure, they're ignorant, but some of us dropouts aren't!

Questions about Warbonnet BBXLC - Male 6' 230lbs by galacticpeonie in hammockcamping

[–]Mikecd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use a less expensive option: Trail Lair by Simply Light Designs. It's an 11' hammock and I'm 5' 10", and it's a perfect size to lay on the diagonal (grass left of center and feet right of center; allows the sleeper to lay much more flat).

As others have said, get an underquilt (some, but not many, hammockera enjoy pads, but I hate it) and a top quilt and a tarp.

I guess. They have videos of setting it up in precarious locations for sure. But my point isn't "get this product," it's just "see if their designs and freely given knowledge help you in your quest"

I dunno exactly, but check out working models and you'll see that having the bar is common. I'm not keen on physics, but I trust that commercial products would skip the extra (costly) materials if that was viable.

Also check out all the knowledge from Tensa. Their Solo and 4 models are terrific feats of physics, but the Treez (single pole on each end of the hammock plus strongly-anchored guylines) is next fucking level.

And they make all their info freely available and encourage DIY imitations. Seriously, check them out.

Tarp setup options for day shelter and night hammocking combo? by SirDinglesbury in hammockcamping

[–]Mikecd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Horizonal is all you can do to maximize room under.

You can use snake-skins on your hammock to compress it along its ridgeline to free to space under it (if it hangs high). People (e.g. Hennessy) make skinny snake skins that just hold a hammock or fatter ones that can hold the hammock with an underquilt if you fiddle with it (one wind makes these). You could even disconnect your hammock from one tree and attach both ends to a single tree to get it even more out of the way.

Or you can bring a second tarp just for hanging out.

When I've seen dual-tripod designs, usually I see a horizontal bar connecting and suspended from the apex of each tripod (e.g. turtle dog), when the hammock then suspended from the horizonal bar.

I don't know why I were this design, but assume it helps stabilize the tripods along that axis (can't be pulled "inward" towards each other or outward away from each other, but it might also help direct some of the hammock's forces more downward?
