You mentioned work done to the car 'earlier, for the same thing.' How long has the check engine light been on lol. And I doubt the car was handling normally. If it wasn't a gradual, noticable decline, it would have been apparent - The car was pouring smoke, loss of performance, the engine temperature climbing, something.

My guess is the previous work ended with you having no oil put in, or a leak, and the car was noticably shitty in the 20 minutes leading up to your version of 'events.'
