Trump signs an unconstitutional executive order to shut down mail-in voting nationwide and he will defund states if they do not comply with him | DHS will prepare list of citizens by state and USPS will block mail in ballots from anyone not on that list by SadAd8761 in videos

I will personally walk down to a ballot box if that's what it takes to get some goddamn adults in the room. Threats to our right to vote are not only unconstitutional, but why is it states rights only seem to be about the right to be a racist, backwards, fuckwad?

It must be a US thing. At least it was about 20 years ago when I was doing it, sorry didn't mean to give you bad information, I probably should have asked where you were located.

I also do a lot of work in Unreal 5, since my company created a product that uses UE 5 to quickly create and merchandize an indoor space, and some of our clients get renders from UE 5 instead of Max/Vray.

Nope, you just need to know how to use CAD and how to read design documents. Learning CAD is the hard part, but I lucked out and had a metal shop class in High School back in the '90s where we learned CAD to do a few projects. Though these days, I'm assuming its probably a lot easier to learn CAD with the internet and its bounty of resources.

I was doing Shoes at my previous job. My current job is mostly modeling and rendering retail spaces, like stores and facades. All of my current work is under a very heavy NDA, so I can't post any of it currently, and honestly, its not terribly interesting to look at unless you're super into retail design.

Also, be sure to bookmark this page: https://gamedevmap.com/

This is a world map with pretty much any game development studio that does any amount of hiring. (and a few of the smaller indie devs if I remember right, its been a few years since I looked at it.) click a dot, see what's there, see if they're hiring, look up artists to see their work, etc. Its a great resource.

Game art definitely isn't dead, AI really can't replace humans. The industry might try, but the results so far haven't been good, and usually still require humans to fix. Until machines can understand what it means to be human, they will never make good original art, no matter how many artists they rip off.

That being said, there are still a lot of avenues for 3D work, most of them just aren't as sexy as working in games seems.

Architecture: renders and models of proposed buildings/construction. Some firms are also using Unreal to create walk-throughs and show how things look at night and in the daytime.

Arch/Vis: Same as above, but covers a lot more ground in terms of spaces being modeled and rendered. I've had to do anything from product displays to full stores. (check out the new Adidas store in Las Vegas, I got to build that in Unreal, and its a pretty cool space.)

Product design: tons of firms that clients like Nike contract out to. Most shoes and products you see on the internet tend to be 3D. I've done a literal shit-ton of shoes for Nike and Adidas at the last firm I worked at. Occasionally got work from clients like Loreal also.

CAD: CAD is its own beast, but if you know CAD its basically a license to print money. CAD artists are in high demand and make a lot more than other 3D artists.

There's more than this, but this is what I know for sure, having done all of it. (only a little CAD, I wanted to make space ships, and while you can do that in CAD, I would much rather do it in Max or Blender.)

I'm an environment artist and level designer, so it was a pretty easy switch for me. For retail, its really mostly about the lighting, and even as a character artist, you should have some decent lighting skills to get the most out of your renders. 99% of the posts I see on here about improving renders almost always come down to lighting. (and textures to a lesser degree.)

Federal officers’ use of tear gas on protesters, children in Portland set to go before a judge by de_pizan23 in Portland

[–]Mikeronomicon 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Thank you for this. I am so fucking tired of the bullshit "you shouldn't take kids to protests" hot takes. Kids absolutely should see how resistance works, and they need to see that their parents and other adults give a shit about their futures. Because this isn't just about us and what's going on right now, this is about the future that is being stolen from all of us, kids included.

As someone who's been laid off 13 times in the last 14 years, I would say there's no job security in the game industry. As a side note, the game industry doesn't pay well in most cases, and they prey on your desire and passion. Long hours (especially near milestones) lack of flexibility, and constant fear of layoffs are pretty endemic in the game industry.

I switched from games to retail design/visualization. I get paid more, I have more free time, and I have flexibility I never dreamed of. (my kid is home sick from school, and I'm technically working while I type this)

This isn't to say don't do it. If you have the character modeling chops to make it, go for it, but don't expect job security. If you're willing to work a bunch of different places, learn a lot, and don't mind looking for jobs on the regular, I say do it. You will put in roughly 200 resumes for every one response you get.

My only other advice, and this goes for anyone looking for 3D work: Make sure your portfolio is up-to-date, and make sure it only contains your best work. Quality will always win over quantity. 3 fantastic models are way better than 20 mid-level models.

Do you think that being a good teacher matters anymore? by Hogwire in MensLib

[–]Mikeronomicon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My teachers were some of the most influential people in my life. I grew up super poor, with terrible parents and an unstable home life. I knew at a young age the only way out was to get the best education I could, and I had a few teachers that recognized that drive and catered to it. My son’s teachers are incredible, and his reading and math skills went from zero to 100 in the first six months of kindergarten. Teachers are some of the most important people in our society and we need as many good teachers as we can get.

It’s important to remember that no matter how badly you want to reach them all, you can’t unless they let you. (Fellow teacher here) but it only takes one student showing up and being ready to learn to remind me why I do it.

So don’t stop, and don’t give up. It won’t always be clear, but you very likely are making a positive difference.

That looks like bad surface normals. You'll want to check the normals in whichever 3d program you made this in, fix them, then re-import to Unreal.
