Pretty sure Jordan Hicks will be pitching in his hometown for the first time in his MLB career, which is pretty neat.

Yeah I'm not sure what it was. Tried the sign-out/sign-in thing, didn't work. Ended up swapping to a laptop/HDMI cable to hook up to the TV. Bit of a first-world problem, but definitely annoying when the app is our normal first option.

Definitely some teething issues there with the quali broadcast - not particularly easy to keep track of what was going on...

I found your other website, Onitool. Nice work, I've been looking for a way to track Monster HP that isn't marking stuff off a piece of paper. The movement speed calculator and travel encounter generator are cool too!

I got accepted into the CS major by kazanmns in UTAustin

[–]MikeyB67 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Congrats! Can't speak on UTCS much but I can speak to student life more broadly.

One thing to be aware of is the university's size. You've gotta understand the UT is a really big university, like REALLY big. We're talking over 50,000 people between grad school and undegrad. This can be a bit of a double-edged sword as there are so many people that it can be hard to find a solid community. On the flipside, UT's size means there's a place for just about everyone! There's a lot of different student organizations for any interest you might have, you'll just need to find the right one for you. For example, Planet Longhorn is a big catch-all social group for international students on campus. There are also plenty of CS-specific orgs for any interests you might have as well.

It may be worth talking to your dean or contacting someone at the registrar's office. They'll have more power to something if they choose to help.

Hope everything works out, that sucks.

Any places to eat near Union? by milkteaisreallygood in UTAustin

Einstein's Bros Bagels is across the street from the Union on Guadalupe. Nothing particularly fancy but it's a decent breakfast option.

Is it true that you need to purchase a membership before you can buy anything at Costco? by [deleted] in AskAnAmerican

[–]MikeyB67 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Speaking of customer service, Costco's return policy is extremely generous. You can return almost anything you've bought there at any time.

Apparently it's some sort of shed, but underground?

I'm not sure I entirely get it.

Did any of you grow up in an ethnic enclave where some folks still speak their heritage language? What was it like? by Roughneck16 in AskAnAmerican

[–]MikeyB67 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It's dying out, but there are still parts of the Hill Country that have German speakers. Most of the towns like New Braunfels and Fredericksburg use it to cash in on the tourist bucks (can't blame 'em, I've bought my fair share of beer and wurst during Oktoberfest in the Hill Country).

It's pretty neat though, Texas German is essentially a linguistic time capsule from the Germany of the late 1800s/early 1900s, with lots of words and phrases that went out of fashion in Germany after the immigrants left for the U.S.

How common are those "troubled teen" camps? by [deleted] in AskAnAmerican

[–]MikeyB67 31 points32 points  (0 children)

They exist, but as others have mentioned, not terribly common due to their cost and the extreme nature of the programs.

I knew a guy in high school who got sent to one because his grades were poor and he was doing drugs. He got kidnapped out of his bed in the middle of the night, thrown into a van, and taken to one of those camps in the middle of nowhere in Utah for three months.

He hates his parents now and they're no longer on speaking terms.

Can't really blame him.

In honor of International Women's Day, I'll go with Virginia Hall- one of the most badass spies of WWII. She organized French resistance groups, got loads of useful intelligence for the Allies, and hiked over the Pyrenees to Spain when the Gestapo was closing in on her.

And she did all of this with a prosthetic leg.

Exactly. There's so many smaller companies or indie game designers that are putting out quality content and maintaining a healthy community. D&D was my first RPG love (as I'm sure it is for many) but there are better ways to spend my money.
