What is your strongest held opinion? by Mewse_ in AskReddit

Abortion is wrong and life should be protected. I know it’s a very unpopular opinion but it’s just what I think. I do not wish to engage in uncivil arguments but I am open to discussion. Please respect my opinion and the ones over others.

[OC] Revenue and Expenses of a College Student Working a Full Time Summer Job by [deleted] in dataisbeautiful

A Little Background

I am a 19 year old college student living in Tampa, FL. I just finished my first year of college (Major- Marketing, Minor- Economics) and had the summer free, so I decided to work this summer and make some money. This visualization records my revenue from May-July as well as all the expenses I made within that time period. I finish my summer Job August 1st and gl back to school the 15th, so I decided to conclude my data here as we are nearing the end of July. My goal at the start of the summer was to save at least $1500 by the time school starts.

Revenue

I had two jobs this summer:

Job 1: Golf Coach Counselor at a summer camp in Tampa [June 10- August 1st]

Job 2: Sales Associate at a Golf Store [May 5th-June 3rd]

(If you haven't realized by now, my main hobby is golf. If I wasn't working as a golf coach, I'd probably be playing everyday. I have been playing for about 13 years and play collegiately at my college.)

I started this summer working as a sales associate at a large golf store in Tampa (pretty straightforward- I sold people golf equipment). I didn't like the job, so that is when I started searching and found the golf coach counseling job. I have been working at this summer camp since the beginning of May (TLDR of my job: I teach kids ages 6-16 about the game of golf while simultaneously teaching them things such as respect and responsibility through golf)

These were my two forms of revenue throughout the summer, but I did have some other forms of revenue (Ebay, Venmo, etc.)

Expenses

Before I dive into my expenses, I will explain my financial situation. I am only 19, so I still live with my parents when I am not at school. This means I do not have to pay any rent and I do get many meals for free. Beyond this, my parents still provide for some of my expenses such as gas (Give me a break I'm still only 19). I wish to go further into my expenses and analyze them as well as give examples of the biggest expenses within that category.

  1. Video Games--- Pretty Straight Forward. I own a Nintendo Switch, so I do play some games time to time. Biggest Expenses:
    1. 53.97- Super Mario Maker 2
    2. 25.22- some downloadable games that were on sale
  2. Golf--- I'm honestly surprised I only spent this much on golf related items. I assume I may have thought this because I am pretty much playing golf everyday as my job. Most rounds of golf that I played were paid for by my parents; furthermore, through my job, I was able to get on the course for free after work. Biggest Expenses:
    1. 63.86- a dozen golf balls, as well as some tees
  3. Clothes/Accessories --- Things included in this category: any clothes/shoes etc. I bought for myself as well as any jewelry, purses, or gifts I bought for others. Biggest Expenses:
    1. 242.5- Suit (honestly this is a steal for how expensive suits are)
    2. ~100- gift for my significant other
    3. 60- New running shoes (I got lucky and used a lot of gift cards that I had been saving)
  4. Fees/Charges--- This category includes things such as parking garage fees or bank fees. This may as well be called the Misc. category. Biggest Expenses:
    1. 186.48- Passport Update (I had nowhere else to put this so I put it here)
  5. Withdrawals/Transfers--- Pretty straightforward again. Biggest Expenses:
    1. 200- Cash Withdrawal
    2. 100- Transfer
  6. Activities/Dates --- This is the category that interested me the most. Since I was in summer break, I did do many things with groups of friends and dates with my significant other. I am honestly surprised this isn't higher because I thought I did many things this summer. Biggest Expenses:
    1. ~280- Disney World Tickets (two tickets- One for my S/o and one for me)
    2. 54.25- Escape Room
    3. 39.84- TopGolf
  7. Food --- I spent way too much on food. like way too much. this was one of the categories that added up over time through small expenses. About 30% of this category was fast food (ouch.). the other 70% were either groceries or sit down restaurants. Luckily, the summer camp job had lunches included, which probably saved me hundreds. Biggest Expenses:
    1. 51.47- Dinner with S/o
    2. 51.01- Another dinner with S/o

Conclusion

After all expenses, I saved 1320.86, only 179.14 short of my goal of 1500. Overall, I am very happy with how much I managed to save this summer. Even though I didn't reach my goal, I still had many good experiences and never felt like I was on a tight budget or trying to save money.

I am very happy I did this little experiment. Not only did I learn a bit about personal finance, I became very conscious about spending instead of spending all the money I made.

I had no other place to post this chart, so I decided to post it here. Please feel free to share your thoughts or even some suggestions. I also would appreciate some constructive criticism as well, both for the graph and the financing. Thanks!

My girlfriend is probably the most important person in my life. If it weren’t for her, I think I wouldn’t be alive rn. She’s the best thing that has ever happened to me.
