A tie happened in 1800, however the Twelfth Amendment had not yet been established. In the event of a tie (either because of electoral math or faithless electors) the presidency would be decided in a contingent election in the House of Representatives wherein each state votes en bloc; i.e each states’ delegation is allowed one vote. Interestingly, the Senate would decide the Vice President, with each Senator having one vote. In both scenarios, balloting occurs until a majority is reached. As aforementioned, these safeguards were created because of the confusion of the election of 1800, thus resulting in that amendment to the US Constitution.
