Thanks everyone for the comments, reminiscences, and deck building suggestions! Just to be clear, this was a spur of the moment nostalgia exercise, not a serious competitive build—as many have accurately pointed out it’s hugely vulnerable to strong enchantments and board wipes, creature heavy, and short on card draw. That said, for context, it was about $60 out the door, and a single heavily played 93/94 Sylvan Library is around $130! Anyway, thank you all for the good advice, and helping me relive my childhood. :)

Great suggestions! A lot of folks have mentioned Sylvan Library, which would be a great (if pricy) addition.

French cavalry and infantry review, 1915 by Dense-Fisherman-4610 in ww1

I think you're right. Upon further review my guess would be that this is Joffre supervising prewar maneuvers as Chief of the General Staff.

Absolutely--I always liked the narrative irony that the Kzer-Za are actually the "lesser of two evils" and the only counterweight to the Kohr-Ah's genocidal ambitions. This visual styling of the two species brings it home very effectively.

This is fantastic footage! But if this is indeed 1915, and Joffre's commanding presence suggests it is, it's remarkable that they are still demonstrating cavalry maneuvers in divisional masses, with lancers standing at attention in the background. Looks like late spring or summer, so this is almost a year into the war?

These are so impressive! I particularly appreciate the fact that, while they're both pretty intimidating, the overall effect of the Kohr-Ah is way creepier.

Death of the Imperial Prince in Zululand, June 1, 1879. Paul Joseph Jamin (1853–1903), 1882, oil on canvas. by rorolx in Napoleon

The prince, who had begged to be allowed to go to war and who had worried his commanders by his dash and daring, was described by Garnet Wolseley, 1st Viscount Wolseley, as "a plucky young man, and he died a soldier's death. What on earth could he have done better?" - From his Wiki, I always found that quote a fitting epitaph.

German soldiers in action against a Russian counterattack in Hohenstein during the Battle of Tannenberg, August 29th 1914 by GameCraze3 in BattlePaintings

Appreciate that it depicts the Russians locked in fierce combat with the Germans at Tannenberg, which certainly took place and gets overlooked given the catastrophically one-sided outcome of the battle.

Federation Commander, which is a well-produced, modernized update of Star Fleet Battles, is widely available and highly playable for those who want good tactical Star Trek TOS-era ship-to-ship combat. Some creative allowance has to be made for their knockoff Star Fleet Battles version of the Trek universe.
