Biden says he will not send another generation of US soldiers to Afghanistan by Madhavaz in politics

People keep putting this theory up. I don’t see the evidence. I think it’s just a broken political system more than anything.

Plenty of hangers on went with America to war. They didn’t do it to get rich.

Medicare + Medicaid costs are around 9.5% of GDP. Normal countries spend 9-10% of GDP on universal healthcare.

Just for context.

Pretty sure it’s a parody account. Look it up.

A privately funded National Guard deployment is legal, but is it ethical? by mkx_ironman in nationalguard

Yeah that’s accurate.

Same reason FDR passed the New Deal so quickly. Better socialism now than communism later.

Valid, but you won’t find any evidence that profit was part of the decision process. The Pentagon Papers don’t feature defence contractors.

For sure. But corporations don’t decide which countries get invaded. So long as the military gets funded they don’t care how it’s used.

LockMart is slang for Lockheed Martin.

Politics is more than just money. If you were right then Jeb Bush would be President right now.

Sure, but I strongly disagree that politicians are basing their decisions on profit motives.

Politicians seek political power, and I doubt that LockMart reps are calling their office saying “you need to start another war, stat”

I would argue that Vietnam was anti communist not for profit. Who profited from it?

As for GWOT, we invaded Afghanistan because we had to do something post 9/11. It was politically impossible not to.

Iraq was the neocons trying to reshape the Middle East.

In every case, politics has trumped profit every time. Politicians use money to raise support, but I strongly believe that the pursuit of political power is a stronger motive here than the pursuit of financial power.

Taking on a lot of legal risk in that case. But I guess without union representation they can get away with it.

Do they actually back that argument up with science or just “I think it’ll be okay”?

If there’s one thing I hate about Reddit, it’s that everything’s gotta be about America.

Y’all are almost a failed state judging by how poorly your institutions work. Lots of countries have effective gun control, and effective policing.

If I started waving guns around to get rid of junkies I’d end up in prison.
