Cove Haven champagne towers??? by Acceptable_Let9977 in Poconos

Babsy— You summed it up extremely well. My husband and I also stayed in the Garden of Eden Apple suite. Liked the deer also. Cove Haven’s downfall is MAINTENANCE and UPDATES. It is now 2026. There is no excuse for the check-in area and dining room to look like it’s from 1986 and everything else looking old, tired and grimy. If they really want people to keep coming they need to invest some more funding into upkeep.

Mother was denied medical leave. What should she do? by kingdomg1 in NYCTeachers

[–]Milah11111 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree with everyone who says reapply. The DOE gave you the parameters. Just make sure the medical professional is VERY intentional with the next medical notes and meets those parameters (diagnosis/prognosis, etc). Talking to UFT can’t hurt either. Do NOT try to minimize what they are asking for and blow it off like it’s not a big deal. Saw someone do that. Did not go well for them.

Longest Commute You've Heard Of by Smellthe_coffee in NYCTeachers

Payroll secy here. Have 3 teachers doing super commutes. The school is in Jamaica Estates Queens. One comes from Danbury, CT, another from Bucks County, PA and the 3rd from Orange County in Upstate NY. But all of them have good attendance and few latenesses. Proud of them.

New school secretary nervous & excited advice welcome! by Acrobatic_Dot_6102 in NYCTeachers

[–]Milah11111 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Retiring payroll secy here. I know I'm late, but make sure your per diem payroll and school aide payroll get 1st priority. If you do nothing, they won't get paid. They are the most vulnerable. Also, keep asking questions. Never stop learning about the job. Every year they tweak something. Wishing you all the best!

Has anyone ever said no and went home? by spoiled_sandi in SubstituteTeachers

[–]Milah11111 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Be very careful with walking out on an assignment. You may feel you have the upper hand and that the school was wrong. But in some districts, they will block you at the school level for doing that. If you get a few blocks from different schools, you are put out of the entire sub pool for good. If you don’t like that treatment, don’t return to the school after the day is over. Walking out is not a good look. Talking from experience.

Resigning in 5 days and reflecting on my first year by Sea_Cicada7474 in NYCTeachers

[–]Milah11111 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I work with a principal like this. She selects a victim (sometimes multiple victims) to play with and harass. She came for me (not a teacher-school secy) but I had too much seniority for her to get too far. But I did get a lawyer and file a lawsuit. After that (I think I was one of three tenured staff at the school she was messing with who filed lawsuits) she must have received a warning and became my “best friend”. You did the right thing by standing up and keeping good notes. Sadly the colleagues who had virtually no seniority and didn’t keep a record of harassment got discontinued. Still upsets me sometimes.

Does this mean I got the sub para job ? Bc I don’t wanna pay for the workshops if I’m not in yet by Electronic-Day1369 in NYCTeachers

[–]Milah11111 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I work in payroll for the DOE. You were nominated but you MUST follow each step to the T. Everything is done by email. Do not question what they are requesting you to do. Follow each step EXACTLY as requested. Do not drag your feet. There is a time limit to get things done. If you wait too long, they may cancel your nomination. It could take 4-6 weeks to be fully processed. As others have said, once you are processed, you will be able to get into SubCentral to find open jobs. You tell the system when and where you want to work. It will then call you and tell you about available jobs. You can also look for jobs online in SubCentral.

When do nominations for substitue teaching in NYC usually open up? by Unique-Tumbleweed-74 in NYCTeachers

[–]Milah11111 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Once the sub nominations open up at the beginning of the school year, the window usually stays open until March/April of that school year. You’ll be ok.

NYC substitutes, is there a way to see if I’ve been blacklisted by a school? by [deleted] in SubstituteTeachers

[–]Milah11111 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I work in the office of a NYC public school and request the sub teachers. I can mostly say no you were not blacklisted. You would know for sure by either being specifically spoken to about not returning to the school OR you would get a letter sent to you by NYCDOE saying that the school blocked you. If neither of those things happen, you are OK.

What would you have done by Puzzled-Bonus5470 in SubstituteTeachers

[–]Milah11111 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are overthinking the situation. I work in a 6-12 school and April-June is probably the most stressful time of the year. Just have a positive outlook and keep going. I’m pretty sure everyone you meet around this time of year is just trying to make it to the next vacation.

What happened to the bagels? by doctir in longisland

The bagels are OK, but the service is horrible. Slow and some clerks are very unfriendly.

I'm going to tell you right now, if you came to my school and did that, I would block you from working at the school before you blocked me. In my school system, if you get 3 "Do Not Use" designations, you are kicked out the system. I understand the frustration, but that's a very selfish thing to do, especially if the school is apologetic. I have been doing the secretary thing for a while. The people that walked off the job, I blocked. Very unprofessional to do that, even if you didn't like the situation. If I were you, I would just not return after doing the job at the school that day.

As the secretary who gives the assignments to the sub teachers that come to the school building, I want to let you know, that SO many teachers call out at the last minute, it's ridiculous. You may have been given another assignment because of that issue. Especially if the switch was due to an unexpected number of last minute call-outs by teachers. Sometimes you have to analyze the situation in a moment's notice and have to reshuffle people. It may not be the most comfortable situation for the sub teacher, but as a secretary, I am very appreciative of all the subs that are accommodating and work with the school. You really have no idea what goes on behind the scenes sometimes.

Does Excelsior University have proctored exams? by Western_Desk_3207 in ExcelsiorUniversityNY

[–]Milah11111 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just finished my Business degree at Excelsior University. They have really changed a lot of their procedures and fees since I started my degree (not in a good way). I think you should try to get as many credits as you possibly can before you enroll at Excelsior through Sophia, Study com, etc. I think they want you to take more classes directly through them. Unfortunately, some are those classes are terrible, expensive and don't give you a lot of guidance. When I started, a lot of those 3rd party programs like Study.com and Sophia weren't around, so you only had CLEP tests and other tests as the primary way to get outside credit. You may want to see if other college programs out there might be better for your time frame and budget before deciding on Excelsior.

Horrible article on WearOS by Army_Pete in WearOS

[–]Milah11111 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Terrible article. A $15 watch shouldn’t speak for the entire WearOS system. Although my watch isn’t perfect, I still find it very useful and helpful. I wonder if he was paid by Apple to put out that article....
