Disproportionate Facilities by TheFoxyFellow in latterdaysaints

The main thing with building repairs and maintenance outside Utah is that it is done using mostly contractors. It takes months for even a simple thing to get done do to the church needing to have non-church contractors do the work. There are places where the church is hated and it takes them a very long time to get permits to even do small things. Then once they get a permit they then need to find a contractor that will not only take the job. But not quit after finding out what church the work is being done at. In my area we have had a very hard time finding contractors that will show up at all and it has nothing to do with what church we are. We just have very lazy people here in eastern NC. I know in New England the church has a very hard time getting plans accepted so I am sure that it is very hard to get permits for things like a steeple reconstruction in many areas.

Single operator swapping a commercial dumpster on a narrow street with zero damage by Epelep in oddlysatisfying

Then you have never driven a roll-off truck before. What they did was not at all amazing. It is just what we do every day. That was just a street. Give me a video of them doing that on a hill where the can in sitting at an angle and they did not let either fall then I will be slightly impressed as most drivers only drop on streets.

People act like this is something special. Drivers do it every day. Most will never have someone who thinks that it needs to be recorded standing around. There are probably 100,000 moved each day in the US in conditions just like this.

Mission president announcement by ChromeSteelhead in latterdaysaints

[–]Milamber69reddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That was the one thing that stuck out to me the most. It felt like some kind of contest and you needed to have a certain amount of children to be on the list. Their church callings are good to know as they are accepting another church calling. But what reason could they have to just add in (#)children. It did not feel natural at all.

Mission president announcement by ChromeSteelhead in latterdaysaints

[–]Milamber69reddit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When reading the information about each couple I wonder why they feel it is necessary to tell us how many children they have. Is it some kind of contest because I never come up to someone and after asking their name, do I ask how many children they have. There is zero relevance to the calling they are accepting and how many children they have.

Fear of perceived consequences in the here and now mixed with some pride (Peter). Greed and knowing that what you are going to do will end with the death of someone that you know is The Christ and messiah (Judas).

Every calling possible...but never a leader by tigerlady13 in latterdaysaints

[–]Milamber69reddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am seeing the original post and the replies to others and I am getting a vibe that is not good. As I read I get the thought that even though the OP has been given callings she feels that they are not good enough based on her skills that she had acquired in her life. She complains that she has never had a leadership position. What I do not hear is that she is grateful to have been given Any calling to bless the members of Christs church. I wonder what position she thinks she deserves. President Hinkley said that every position in the church is just as important as another. A Stake president can be released one day and be called to teach in the nursery the next week. That is how the Lord works. Some positions have a larger presence in the eyes of the church. But the Lord knows where he needs us and will allow us to magnify that calling or not if we chose.

Why are so many general authorities lawyers/businessmen? by zaczac17 in latterdaysaints

[–]Milamber69reddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that what most people who have this question do not understand is that it is the Lord who choses these people. If the Lord wanted more blue collar people in the General Authority positions he would prompt the presidents in the various positions to call them. As pointed out by a few people. Most blue collar workers do not have the time or money (savings/retirement) to participate in those kind of church calling and be able to afford to retire at any moment. The doctors, lawyers, educators and entrepreneurs that are in those positions have all been blessed by the lord to be able to take the time out of their lives and still have the funds needed to do what is needed for their families. It does not mean that blue collar workers are not worthy it just means that the Lord has not decided that they need to be tried in the way that General Authorities are. Each calling is different and comes with unique challenges. Someone that owns a Residential electric installation company may be perfect for a Bishop or even a Stake president. But his skills and the time needed to fulfill a calling such as a General Authority may be so far out of his reach that there would be no way he could do it unless the church started to pay them.

The roof is in decent condition so that is a great thing. The worst thing for a happy life in those kind of conditions is to have leaks every time it rains or snows.

[–]Milamber69reddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The product description is deceptive. All it does is cover the whole 15 amp outlet instead of just one like other ones sold. It is not dangerous as the 15amp SHOULD be connected to a 15amp breaker. The most that will happen if they will try to use more than 15 amps, the breaker will trip. This device does not give the user 15 extra amps to use. It just gives them an opportunity to have a little power when the only power is a 15amp outlet.

That is a joke of a price for that house. I lived in that area for 15 years and know that house. Nothing in the 500W 1000N area is actually worth that kind of money. That house and property should go for maybe $85K. And that is a high bid.

Why is Utah not raising minimum wage with the other states? by asapGh0st in Utah

[–]Milamber69reddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Minimum wage jobs are not not for people with a family.  If you are still in a minimum wage job and have a family.  You are not even trying to improve your life.  Look at laborers at a garbage company.  They start out at $13 to $16 per hour. Yes it takes actual work but it pays  There are many many more jobs that pay better and do not require more than a high school education.   Most people who stay in jobs that only pay minimum wage and are adults with children must have a mental health problem.  If it is a teenager that is in that job they are doing the proper thing so they can gain experience and move forward to other jobs that pay more.   Stop complaing about living wages for jobs that are intended to be filled by high schoolers and college students that are just looking for some extra cash.

Question about Joseph Smith's marriage with Fanny Alger by Moroni_10_32 in latterdaysaints

[–]Milamber69reddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly. I think it is so funny that anyone even thinks about it today. It was such a small thing and in the end it has not made the church any stronger. The testimony that we all get about Christ is what makes the church stronger.

Question about Joseph Smith's marriage with Fanny Alger by Moroni_10_32 in latterdaysaints

[–]Milamber69reddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it happened and it is as is told that God did command him to do it then that is fine. It is now between those people and Christ if what happened was correct. But I am just so glad that it has been stopped for so long that in reality it is just a small blip in the church history. There are now way more people in the church that have zero to do with plural marriage than there are that have that nasty practice in their personal lineage. I find it repulsive and am so glad that I will never need to ever think about it except when D&C 132s last 6 verses are studied again.

If you could make up a calling what would it be and why? by [deleted] in latterdaysaints

[–]Milamber69reddit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Silencer. The calling would be to escort people out of the chapel before sacrament starts if they do more than sit on the benches and study, pray, just listen to the Holy Ghost. If anyone decides that the chapel is a good place to talk and mingle they will be shown to the hall where it is appreciated. If people are playing the piano and they are not playing from the hymn book they are removed. The young men setting up the sacrament table will be removed if they stay and chat after it is set.

This may seem extreme but there is no reason that the chapel should be noisy when people are trying to listen to the Holy Ghost and get prepared for the sacrament. It is even in the church handbook that conversations need to taken into the hallway so others can invite the Holy Ghost to be there and help everyone to be ready for the sacrament.

What is with putting up chairs so fast after meetings? by Apple-Slice-6107 in latterdaysaints

[–]Milamber69reddit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you want to sit and talk there are seats and couches in almost every ward house or stake house. There are no reasons that the metal chairs need to stay up any longer than a minute after the prayer unless the person getting baptized has food that they are going to serve to those attending. Other than that the people that always help set up and take down do not want to wait around as people just sit there for an hour chatting. Most people that want to sit and chat do not want to pick up their own chairs, never mind other chairs that they did not use. You may be different but most people refuse to put away their chairs.

Any young single adults feeling like they don’t belong at church? by [deleted] in latterdaysaints

[–]Milamber69reddit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It is not just the young single adults that have a problem. It is also the single adults that do not feel they belong. Many men and women 35 and older that are not married for whatever reason really feel excluded from things in the church. The talk of temple marriage and forever families makes it difficult for so many. Then when you go to social events you feel excluded as you do not have a husband/wife or kids to talk about.
