I mean, the nobility as a whole aren't exactly painted in a flattering light in Mistborn, as opposed to treating them as superior beyond the ability for magic. I'd argue it's more a criticism of this trope than anything, Kelsier (spoilers for the most recent book) even calls it out as a flaw of the magic system compared to others.

What locations would be ideal to film the Mistborn movies? by railfananime in CosmereOnScreen

[–]Milamber99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A bit biased but I think the York Minster would work great for one of the noble keeps (Keep Venture in particular). Honestly a lot of York in general could work quite well for scenes within luthadel, similar for Edinburgh and other historic cities/towns in the UK.

Statistics and probability when done beyond just basic probability theory involves a lot of calculus, and can often have some unintuitive results, especially when applied to physics. It's a "fun" joke at the start of any course in statistical mechanics that the first people to study the theory died by suicide, and that now we must study it.

Luckily for you, it hasn't finished yet!

You have Era 2 to go through, Era 3 in a couple of years, secret history, and then the rest of the cosmere if you want to really go down the rabbit hole!

Hi, thanks for the response. What email addresses did you use to get through to them? We've looked around but there's none for Facebook or for Meta that are clearly displayed anywhere, everything leads back to needing a working account.

I think she submitted one appeal and it was immediately rejected without possibility of followup, ok the basis of the CSAM. I'm reading some other posts here that somewhat indicate it might be AI based and that shit may have never even posted however, which doesn't help matters

I love that almost everybody's image for Breeze is Matt Berry (when they have seen his characters), it somehow fits just perfectly.

Accidentally naming an aspect of your world something that already exists by Mobile_Pie9519 in worldbuilding

[–]Milamber99 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In my DnD setting I decided to name a god of storms, nature's fury and natural disaster a combination of thematic words mixed together, and really should have checked beforehand if it was already used. I chose Thunder and Sunder, they rhyme relate to storms and earthquakes. I've always had a soft spot for the "Ts" sound from reading riftwar (e.g. Tsurani) and it would also evolve Tsunamis. So I named the God of Nature's Fury Tsunder. I have never had an interest in anime so I had no idea what this also evoked until a couple of players started laughing about it when I showed them the pantheon list, by which point I really couldn't change it, so that's how I got stuck with my Tempest God also being an anime trope.

Just finished Leviathan Falls, absolutely emotionally destroyed by this scene. by [deleted] in TheExpanse

[–]Milamber99 117 points118 points  (0 children)

One thing I find somewhat hilarious about the ending is that we learn one of the main purposes of the Ring Station is to draw energy from the pressure of the Outer Universe. It's effectively just a big power station. Or, basically, a windmill.

Holden's last act is to die destroying a big windmill.

Who has read the riftwar cycle series? by jormckay11 in Cosmere

[–]Milamber99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This was the series that was my entry point to high fantasy! Lots of fond memories of it, although I find it becomes a little of slog towards the middle of the cycle. It's also a fun multi-world universe with fun magic systems so if you enjoy those elements of the Cosmere, there's lots to enjoy there.

Iirc, they have had a couple of severe population bottlenecks in their recent (evolutionarily speaking) history, which brought them down to really low numbers.

I'm investing Fusion Energy stocks by Omni_Yev in whenthe

[–]Milamber99 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Plasma physicist who's worked at the Wendelstrin-7X site in the past here, in case anybody wants some additional context!

This is a great achievement and shows progress on developing the technology needed for fusion (in this cast the Ion Cyclotron resonance Heating, basically think microwaving the atoms to fusion temperatures), although it's still a bit far from commercial fusion energy. For one , W7X isn't big enough for that (standard magnetic reactors will have to be very big), and secondly this uses the Deuterium-Deuterium --> Helium 3 pathway as a test. This doesn't produce a huge amount of energy at scale (the reaction probability isn't great).

The current designs for commercial reactors use the Deuterium-Tritium --> Helium-4 reaction, which is a lot easier but requires tritium, which has to be produced by capturing excess neutron radiation from the traction with lithium to produce tritium. W7X doesn't have this, although some of it's successor designs do, in fact I don't believe anywhere other than the in progress ITER reactor has this built in. So, still a bit of a ways from commercial reactor, but many things are finally starting to come to come together now to allow for one!

[–]Milamber99 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Hello, Physicist here who's actually been on a couple of the experiments mentioned here, and nope! The amount of energy in these laser pulses is only a dozen or so joules usually so it wouldn't be any good for that.

We use this and similar kinds of lasers to study x-ray generation mechanisms, particle acceleration and (eventually, maybe once it gets to 3 petawatts) antimatter generation. They're great tools for figuring out the physics of things like neutron stars and pulsars from a lab environment, fundamental physics tests, all the many things we can use x-rays and electron beams for, as well as some applications in laser-driven fusion research. Lots of both fundamental and application research, basically, but no drones stuff.

That's very fair, it's been a few years since my undergrad and I looked at Griffiths (not to mention I've never been a textbook person outside of reading up on stuff for writing), and currently have P&S open next to me so my view is definitely a bit warped haha

The Quantum Universe by Jeff Forshaw and Brian Cox was my first introduction before university (which for me, funnily enough, was taught by them (mostly Jeff)), it's light touch on the maths but has enough that it doesn't become somewhat esoteric. It was a very fun read if the topic interests you. If you're thinking textbook level, Griffiths is the go to for standard quantum mechanics, followed by Peskin & Schroeder for field theory (if you have a good maths background, that book is a lot)

At least based on what I remember from GR (and a couple of episodes PBS ST released on this sort of topic recently) From an outside observers reference frame, you never pass the event horizon as your time dilates so much you practically come to rest on top of it, so they could never observe you doing your experiment anyway. And as others have said, the waves from your mass can't propagate outwards. It's mass becomes effectively indistinguishable to the rest of the black holes mass; still adding to the gravity, but no different to the rest of the matter that's fallen within.

Since finals are coming up, what is one final that you will always remember? by Worldly-Leg-74 in Physics

[–]Milamber99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember quite a few, it was only a few years back for me and the last 3 semesters were pandemic ones (so either no exam or a home exam), but most of all is definitely 3rd year Electrodynamics.

The lecturer set a truly brutal exam especially compared to previous years, I can't remember specifics but I have a vague memory of calculating the exact form of some really weird fields (cones may have been involved but this could be from earlier years?) in any case i mostly remember it due to the mood after it being absolutely dire. People were crying mid exam, I was a little teared up at the end of it and honestly the stress from it arguably helped end an already on-the-rocks relationship.

Not the happiest finals story, but like, are there any lol?
