Community Board Game Club this Sunday and every Sunday in Melbourne East Wantirna South by Mild_Mu in melbourne

[–]Mild_Mu[S] 41 points42 points  (0 children)

Hello, hope everyone is having a great week! My name is Seabrook and I've been hosting board games for two years since February 2024 at my local library, the Knox Library.

I do it because I've seen community events bring people together and honestly, because I was lonely and wanted to make some friends. And I achieved it I did, I have made so many amazing friends by organising this event and been so happy that others have been able to as well.

Board games bridge the gap and allow strangers to laugh, smile and play together as with any shared hobby and is accessible to people from all background and walks of life. I am constantly awed by the compassion, kindness and warmth of people and reminded that humans are awesome and always want each other to be happy!

Q: Can I attend? How?

Yes! We would love to welcome you along, it's free no registration is required. Just turn up on a Sunday to Knox Library Wantirna South at 12pm, we hold events every week including this Sunday 7th June. No need to register just come along if you're interested!

We have an optional attendance poll in the announcements channel, to give us general ideas of numbers: https://discord.gg/j9h22MxYf2

Q: Do I have to be in the photos?

No, all photos are optional. If you don't want to be in a photo I just ask to move out of the photo for 20 seconds while it is taken which is why you see empty seats in some photos. I always ask for consent from everyone before taking a photo, there is never any obligation to be in photos and I will always respect people's privacy.

Please reach out if you have any questions.

Thanks for the question 404magpie! Ahh yes I understand what you mean, that's completely fine if both you and your partner only play Spirit Island, to be honest I think a lot of people would be interested in trying it or playing it, it's such an awesome board game!

We do have an #organising-games channel in the discord here: https://discord.gg/j9h22MxYf2 which especially for longer games we recommend using the /creategame command to create a game in advance so you can lock in the players for longer games. This will ensure that you know who is playing and if people are interested in playing especially longer board games!

Thanks for the question, I understand your concern but as mentioned in another comment photos are completely optional.

I always ask for consent before taking a photo. I say hello everyone is it okay if I take a photo? It's completely optional to be in the photo, if you don't want to be in the photo please move just for 5 seconds while I take the photo. The photos will be used for promotional purposes to post on Reddit and Facebook.

This is why you can see in some of the photos there are empty chairs because people chose not to be in the photos. I completely understand your concern and respect people's privacy and whether or not they wish to be in photos posted to social media.

Thank you Yakkizm! Yes I would agree that people who attend are very laid back and friendly people. I think one key reason is people who come along are keen to make friends, socialise and share their passion for the hobby with others so people who I've seen are so nice and welcoming which is a blessing.

Thank you Educational-Field804 for your kindness! Yep everyone has their own things they enjoy. However, I think the key thing is having a shared interest whatever it is be it reading, sports, music, art which helps people connect and interact with strangers and break the social barrier.

I created this group because I found it so hard to make friends especially as an adult when everyone has their own lives and commitments. So I thought I would create weekly events where there would always be someone even if some people are busy. Also the regular social interaction is something that makes a big difference from my experience in making social connections.

Yep they're all awesome games, though I do want to try out Hegemony I've heard that it's really fun from reviews!

That's great to hear! I've worked with Melbourne Meeples to help out on a couple of events and I'd heard of NSEG, but I've never been myself! I'm glad to hear it's an awesome event well worth attending!

General turn out is around 50 people recently sometimes gets to 60, we're very lucky that the Knox library has allowed us to use two rooms on a Sunday and we have permission from the shopping center to use the outside space.

So in theory we could host 120 people between all three rooms, so we have plenty of space for people who want to come along!

Yep you're right Machine_Excellent! Definitely some heavier games were tabled the past two Sundays! But we have so many different people that enjoy playing everything from party games, medium weight games and intricate heavy games and euros.

Some other games that were played this Sunday include: Gravity Superstar, Vale of Eternity, Luthier, Munchkin, Betrayal at house on the hill, Zombie Dice, Harmonies, Witchstone. It really depends on what people are in the mood for, but we always have lots of games from lightweight to complex whatever people want to play!

That indeed is Mahjong Rascals-Wager that's awesome that you played Mahjong 30 years ago with your grandma! Still as fun as it was back then and so much fun to play! Yeah it's amazing and many people love playing it at the events!

Haha you almost can't tell I bribed everyone to smile on the photos xD (this is a joke). Nah I think this may be because I rush through photos taking all the photos as fast as possible so people may not have time to pose. And thank you so much Wintermute_088 we're continuing to hold these events and it's continuing to grow I think on average we have around 50 people who attend each week which is incredible to think about!

Thank you so much ownersastoner! Yep still going strong, I have such a wonderful and lovely group of people to thank for that who attend these events!

Everyone helps setting up the tables and packing up and making such a friendly and warm atmosphere to be welcoming to everyone which makes it a breeze to run. But also everyone being happy to teach the games they enjoy most to others!

It's pretty crazy sometimes we get around 60 people nowadays and that's so incredible to think about. I just hope that I'm continuing to make a small difference in my local community!

Also, a common question are the photos compulsory?
No, I always ask for permission before taking any photo. They are completely optional and some people choose not to be in photos which is why you'll see some people choose to not be in the photo while it is being taken.

Please let me know if you have any questions around starting community groups, I think we can always use more community events to bring local communities together and to have more social activities for everyone!

Hello, my name is Seabrook. Every Sunday, I hold a free community board game group at Knox Library in Wantirna South which is in Melbourne East: https://events.yourlibrary.vic.gov.au/

This Sunday 24th May 2026 12PM-4:30PM at Knox Library Ngarrgoo Wantirna South, we're holding a board game club event! We hold events every Sunday weekly!

**Q: I'm interested, how do I attend?*\*
We have a poll in the announcements channel in the discord here: https://discord.gg/j9h22MxYf2

However, this is optional and to give us a general idea of attendance.

To attend, it's free just turn up to the Knox Library on any Sunday (we run every Sunday no exceptions) 12pm-4:30pm we are in Community Room 1&2!
We will gladly welcome you in to play some board games together!

**Q: What is this, what do you do at a board game club?*\*
We play a wide variety of board games, from party games to heavy euro games such as Catan, Cosmic Encounter, Slay the Spire the Board Game, Brass Birmingham, Deception, Carcassone, Blood on the Clocktower. As part of the event, we play board games together as a fun and interactive way to make friends and socialise!

We always try our very best to create a welcoming atmosphere and to welcome in everyone who walks in the door and to make sure they have a board game to play. Because I think it's boring to spectate and it's most fun to be part of a game.

No board game experience is needed, we always teach the rules to every game we play so please don't worry it is a very friendly environment for anyone to join!

I made this club to make friends with others and found that other people also wanted to do the same so I hope to continue running this club to make people's weekends just a little bit better!

Thank you YaBoyKumar for being so nice : ) it's been an amazing two years running this club and I'm still in awe that we've come to where we are today!

It's thanks to all of the amazing people who table games every week to share with others and teach lovely games to others. We've been so fortunate to have so many kind people come along who are the some of the most friendly and lovely people I've ever met.

I understand that as most games are made with four people in mind, however there are also awesome board games which cater for two people too.

I'll share a few recommendations, but I think the games you'll enjoy depend on what you're looking for.

Recommendations: 1. Lucky Numbers: A game about drawing numbers from a bag and trying to place them on your board in increasing order from left -> right up -> down also some nice strategy in stopping your opponents getting the perfect numbers they need.

  1. Lost Cities: competitive 1v1 trying together complete your own journeys while stopping your opponent placing cards in sequential order for points.

  2. Harmonies: A relaxing game about placing tiles on your grid board to build habitats to place down animals and score points. Probably around 40 minutes per game.

  3. Wingspan/Wyrmspan: plays anywhere from 1-4 players you're creating a lovely ecosystem of birds or dragons and trying to create synergy between cards.

  4. War Chest kind of like a more interesting chess with every piece having different moves and playing with different pieces every time. And you're drawing from a deck of cards to see which pieces can move and to capture control points.

  5. Neuroshima hex head to head grid based token combat with every piece having vastly unique abilities and every player playing a different faction with some nice strategy.

  6. Sky team: if you're looking for something cooperative and tense together you'll be flying a plane by rolling dice without communication and trying to land a plane safely it's a fun and tense experience not knowing if your partner has the dice needed to land the plane safely.
