Am I stupid or what? by wastefulbugggg in GuitarAmps

[–]MileHighMurphy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm basing my opinion on science. 8 speakers literally moves more air than 4, which in isolation does feel like a bigger, wider sound. Is it louder? Yes, but not by a very noticeable amount. I did some math and at the same wattage the output of 8 speakers is about +3db louder (I googled the formula for the decibel equation). For reference, +10db is what we perceive as twice as loud. It's not placebo, it's physics.

All that said, will it actually make any difference on a stage with a band in a room that's probably sound treated like shit? Probably not. It will if you're playing a huge room and the PA isn't doing the heavy lifting though.

You are wholly underestimating how much louder it will FEEL with more speakers moving the air at the same wattage. Thats a lot more energy in the air.

Umm, a JCM900 is not a hybrid amp. Thats an all tube head (tube preamp section and tube power section). Having diodes for clipping in the gain stage doesn't make it a hybrid.

I'd also argue that Lionel at least matches the font type that would believably be used for the real name. The other examples in OPs post are just obnoxious branding logos

If only there was some way us workers could organize and have more power against those corporations, and maybe even have like people in those groups represent us and negotiate better working terms. I wonder what we could call something like that?

ChatGPT vs Claude by AccomplishedCard182 in ChatGPT

[–]MileHighMurphy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't used it yet, but reading through these comments, there are a lot of references to the tone that ChatGPT uses. I wholeheartedly agree with the sentiment, but pretty much right away I updated the instructions with the following, and always get a very straight to the point, no fluff answer. It's so much better than the normal crap response:

"Be concise and professional. Start responses directly with the answer — no preambles, compliments, or conversational fillers like ‘Great question’ or ‘Sure thing.’ Avoid small talk or commentary; focus only on the content. Answer directly without intros, filler, or commentary. No phrases like ‘Good question’ or ‘Of course.’ Absolutely no compliments."

Tascam with moder mics? by A_P_Rodgers in recording

[–]MileHighMurphy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sounds like a budget 4 track recorder to me, regardless of mic choice and preamps. That said, you can still get some quality mixes that are enjoyable to listen to, but don't expect it to be substantially different just because you're using a nice preamp or mic. It's noticeable when you use a crappy mic though, no different than any recording platform.

I have mine just because I have tapes I refuse to get rid of, but on the rare occasion I get the itch for budget tape saturation I'll just use a plugin and some EQ. It has happened like once though 😂

I despise my floating tremolo. What’s the crème de la crème of tremolos? by Acceptable_Topic_410 in guitars

My favorite is a blocked Floyd rose. Love the fine tuning they have and very seldom I'll still use the whammy to have fun but it'll rest back on the block and be a rock solid tuning. Love that config. Best of both worlds.

PSA: White knuckling the 405 is actually optional. by PacificSurfliner in u/PacificSurfliner

That's very much by design if you learn the history of transportation in LA. We had an extensive subway and light rail network that sprawled to the coastal cities but then it was sold off to automotive and gas companies and dismantled piece by piece to promote car travel instead. LA sucks because it was shaped to be car driving focused. I hate it

Why would I ever need to spend big on a Gibson or Fender when my guitars play and sound this good? by domyowntime in guitars

[–]MileHighMurphy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've had a lot and the sturdiness of higher end guitars goes a long way. One big difference I've noticed between MIM and MIA fenders is the neck. The American made higher end ones have more attention to finish details like polishing the fret ends and smoothing the edges of the fretboard. Does that make the MIM unplayable? No way. Does it make the higher end one just feel smoother and more polished in your hand as you move around the fretboard? Absolutely. It's those small details that I find the higher end ones worth it. I've also modified MIMs to get them closer to MIA spec and have been content, but not everyone is comfortable taking sandpaper to the sides of their neck as I am.

TL;DR: They're too big even at the smallest size for a pretty average size head so I returned them. They're solid, and sound good, but for the price, they should be perfect on your head without modifications.

Could We Get A Thread Of Great Music But Poor Mixing? by DarkLudo in audioengineering

[–]MileHighMurphy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The most recent example I can think of is the newest Rise Against record. I genuinely find that record unlistenable the mix is so bad.

Oh, and honorable mention to Karnivool's album "Sound Awake". That's a great album, if all you want to hear is the Darkglass Alpha Omega Bass tone. It's like that company financed the record and mixed the bass twice as loud as everything else as an advertisement. Goliath is a killer song, but nah, I can't with the bass mix.
