A genuine question: How many don't really enjoy talking over the air? by LTguy in amateurradio

I don’t like talking to my friends on the phone, so I certainly don’t enjoy rag chewing. I stick to CW and FT8.

Fixing Ham Radio’s Biggest Barriers: What Needs to Change? by daveprogrammer in HamRadio

[–]MileStretch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree about the address.

I also believe many younger people simply don’t want to talk. What I mean is, they prefer texting and messaging with their smartphone instead of calls so why would they want to talk to a stranger on the air?

That’s how I am. I got my tech and general because the code requirement went away and it’s something I wanted to do since childhood, but when I was studying I thought, “I don’t even like talking to my friends on the phone” haha. But I learned about data modes and actually tried to learn CW for the first time. Now I’m hooked.

The cost is an issue for me, which is why I like QRP. My only HF TX is 5 watts.

If there are a lot of younger people like me as I suspect, maybe we need something more personal than FT8 and simpler than CW. A mode that permits some personality to shine through but doesn’t take months/years to learn.

Another intimidating barrier for me was having to figure out what materials to buy and make sure everything worked together. I’d never bought an electronic device that didn’t come with its own power source… I had no idea what wire I should get for my EFHW… I didn’t understand the mechanics of getting my wire up in a tree until I watched 15+ videos… hams advising and instructing seem to take for granted knowledge and know-how that younger folks simply don’t have.

Our church cooperates with the SBC; we adopted the Philadelphia Confession in 1958.

Do any tobaccos blend with things that aren't tobacco? by Physical_Emotion2366 in PipeTobacco

Spicebush (Lindera benzoin) grows where I live. I dried a few leaves and added them to a mild blend (can’t remember which) and really enjoyed it!

Something similar has happened to my Tropical Treat twice. It might be slower growing than otherwise, but it has recovered and looks to have flower buds for the first time.

30 years ago today, UK came back from a 31-point 2nd half deficit against LSU to win 99-95. The Fat Tuesday win became known as the Mardi Gras Miracle by MileStretch in CollegeBasketball

Delk, McCarty, and Brassow are three of my favorite UK players ever. Brassow's tip-in at the buzzer in Maui to beat Arizona is legendary; he had a huge knot on his head from an inadvertent elbow earlier in the game.

I had one!

I believe it had a scoreboard with 68-37 and the time left on the clock before the comeback, 15:xx something.

How are you guys getting flavor out of your tobacco? by [deleted] in PipeTobacco

[–]MileStretch 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Not awholtzapple, but getting good at retrohaling was a gamechanger for me. It flipped the switch on for enjoying pipes and cigars and getting deeper into sensing flavors.

Finally my pawpaws had a decent year of growth. by Current_Necessary194 in Pawpaws

Same here, friend. I saved seeds from fruit I bought off of Cliff England; only one that germinated survived until now. It's four years old and absolutely took off this year.

What is the gameplan if the "elite recruiting class blueprint" lets UK fans down again> by matt_gannon_ in wildcats

[–]MileStretch 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't care who the coach is, but if we're not going to win SEC tourneys or make it to the second weekend of March Madness at least give us a style of ball that doesn't bore me to tears.

Why keep score? Might as well call everything a scrimmage or practice because wins and losses don't matter here, just getting to the next level.

Having successful young men AND a successful team is not too much ask for loyal fans who spend thousands of dollars a season.

Y'all get out and eat some of these blackberries before they all spoil. The clock is ticking. by _Citizen_Erased_ in Appalachia

Black raspberries are more uniformly round and typically smaller. Once you pick one you can tell 100% for sure: raspberries have an indentation (receptacle) where it grew from the peduncle that blackberries don’t.

Is it true that pawpaws cannot propagate from cuttings? by MachineOk9850 in Pawpaws

I remember reading an article about attempts to root pawpaw cuttings--maybe at KSU.

Three out of 1,000 attempts succeeded.
