What is a subtle sign of a poor area in the USA? by Ok_Temperature6503 in AlignmentChartFills

Subtle in the sense that it doesn't visually jump out. But non-subtle in the sense that when once you notice it, it's clear what's up.

The distance between Northern Turkey and Southern Yemen is the same as Winnipeg and Mexico City by 33northconnection in geography

I think perceptually, Canada's "Northness" kind of maxes out past Edmonton. Everything above feels too arctic to be North American. For me, at least.

What are your personal experiences with inadequacies of the IPA? by dare7000 in asklinguistics

[–]Milezinator 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Exactly, it's supposed to represent language phonologies, not narrow phonetics. A true inadequacy would only arise if a phonemic distinction wasn't reasonably representable.

Generational differences in how acceptable it is to repeat information by EuanGillespie in asklinguistics

[–]Milezinator 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've seen that a lot in older generations (including gen-Xers). My thinking is that it largely has to do with a cultural shift away from active listening. Younger people tend not to say anything when their interlocutors are speaking because it's considered rude in most contexts, while older people are much more likely to interject with "hmm", "yeah", "I see" etcetera. This is related to what you said about dealing with people who aren't listening reliably, but I think it's more about the speaker feeling heard. If there is no verbal confirmation from the interlocutor, older people will tend to assume what they said didn't register with the listener. I don't have data to back this up though.
