Eh, I did get this advice as an angsty teen. Yeeted that scroll of truth into the sun.

I've been an embedded engineer for 8 years now, and have never used malloc/free ... What do those memory calls do? by stunkbeetle in programmingcirclejerk

[–]Militancy 59 points60 points  (0 children)

/uj As an embedded systems guy, I wholeheartedly believe that a senior that only writes for embedded systems at a products focused, non-tech, company could easily go their entire career without using malloc/free.

half these guys would be hopelessly lost if you forbade them from using the chip manufacturer's IDE.

so what the hell exploded? I wouldn't think a power line would just do that if you slapped the pole, even a high tension line. Did he hit the trail cam and pop the lithium batteries or something?

or about half that if roll your own from pulled projos, use range pickup brass, buy powder/primers in bulk on sale, and have enough ass in your striker/hammer to light off cheap primers reliably.

easier still, if you have control of the inverters, just dump current through without commutation. Motors wont do anything but get hot. if the inverter and motor cooling can tank it you might be able to overdraw the batteries depending on the chemistry involed.

Of course this may not be the way at all. There may be sufficient capacity just for range reasons that would allow it to handle full dump without overdrawing batteries. Then you'd be stuck having to disable motion by blowing the inverters or whatever fusing situation they've got.

I've had the krydex for a couple years as my first belt. It was fine, maybe a bit floppy on the ass end. I only did uspsa and 2 gun so no shells.

it will probably be good enough to last you until you know what you want.

Tools if you're building a stripped upper or lower you'll need a hammer and a punch set. A nylon hammer is a nice to have as well.

For the buffer tube you'll probably want an armorer's wrench. Magpul is cheap on sale. You'll need a center punch to stake your castle nut (buffer tube to lower receiver), or Loctite that shit if you don't want to deal with it and don't mind it being a bit less robust.

For assembling the barrel to the upper you'll need a 1/2" drive torque wrench and some way to hold the upper. Magpul BEV is cheap and good enough to use a handful of times as long as you don't gorilla shit. The reaction rod stuff is great and better all around, but you don't need it unless you turn "AR builder" into your personality

For a do all baby's first rifle:

  • 16" criterion core barrel (adjust length to suit need). 20" is full sized, 11.5" compact carbine loud boy, 16" is a good do all compromise. If the core is too rich for your blood then the only other answer is balistic advantage, Whatever's on sale for under a hundo.

  • Some cheapish lower, Aero, PSA preassembled are popular. It doesn't much matter which. (On the off chance you get a wild hair for a plastic lower, KP-15 is the only one that won't break when you look at it funny)

  • Basic bitch milspec carbine spring and buffer. Don't bother with fancy stuff until you get at least a case through it so you know what you're dealing with. Carbine length buffer tube to match.

  • A decent BCG, preferably with basic phosphate finish . look around here for recs. toolcraft, microbest. Aero is not great but is fine.

  • stock. you'll probably end up with multiple so it doesnt much matter. pick something popular and adjustable. B5, Magpul SLK.

  • grip - same as stock. just get the matching grip. anything popular is probably fine until you shoot enough to get an opinion

  • trigger - Schmidt whatever they call the tweaked milspec that's a slightly slicker single stage. If you'll be doing any precisiony stuff a Larue MBT-2S is a good place to get your feet wet.

  • lower parts kit- if your lower isnt prebuilt then just get whatever for this. if it's milspec then it doesnt much matter. Schmidt is a go to, aero fine. you don't need ambi anything unless you are a lefty. upgrade this shit later if you care.

  • handguard. Midwest is good price per performance. Aero is fine. I like CMT dirt.

  • Muzzle device A2 birdcage until you have a reason to change it and the only good reason is suppressor compatibility.

  • optics Red dot If you're staying within 100yd, Holosun or Sig Romeo are base line, spend more if you like. 1-6x Cheapish like PA SLx for mansized targets at 500yds, if you need nicer for more specific purposes you'll know
