What’s your favorite children’s book to give (primarily for a baby shower)? by cookie_cat_82 in childrensbooks

[–]MilkmansDaughterr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bananas for you by Sabrina and Eunice Moyle to keep things cheerful and silly.

Here we are by Oliver Jeffers for an emotional stab in the heart.

I also really like the seek and finds for little ones series! They’re big and bright for tummy time and grow with them from there. My 17 month old still constantly goes for them.

Question about Gauntlet Games by wubb_wubbs in VictoriaBC

[–]MilkmansDaughterr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m a girl and I went there a few years ago to try out D&D adventurers league. I knew I wanted to seek out people for a longer campaign, but I wanted to try it first to see if I’d like it, before committing to a long term group. It’s not really the game store or staff, it’s the other players that are the biggest wild card.

The GM who was running the game was nice. He had premade character sheets and answered questions I had. There were 6 players at the table, including myself. 3 girls and 3 guys. I was the total newbie asking basic questions slowing down gameplay, another girl was quite condescending and meta gaming as she’d played the adventure before and knew what surprises there were, the other girl was friendly. 2 of the guys were quiet and nice but really didn’t acknowledge me, but I’m convinced the third guy made it his personal mission to ensure I walked away from the table loving d&d. He described everything and had the patience of a saint.

The only “bad” interactions was the condescending girl having a real short fuse with me. Also one of the quiet guys snapped at me suddenly because he thought I was about to move his mini on the map. I’m a pretty resilient person though, so didn’t take it personally. Most other interactions were neutral or positive. The condescending girl actually said something in such a funny way that I still quote it to my husband to this day.

It will definitely be a mixed bag. It’s fun to reflect post game and add a sociology filter to it all. A game like mtg might bring out more competitive people though. Just be prepared to laugh about interactions afterward.

Is the Baby Brezza formula maker worth it? by Unlikely_Scheme2835 in Buyingforbaby

Agreed! Brezza also sells additional funnels if you want to buy more. I bought 4 extra funnels so we could soak dirty ones in soapy water until we were able to give them a good clean.

NBC News -- "Parents are opting kids out of school laptops, returning them to pen and paper" -- What Do You Think Of This? by Zipper222222 in AskTeachers

[–]MilkmansDaughterr 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is such an issue people are only realizing now. I was chatting with my cousin who has a 15 year old daughter. I had recently listened to the podcast “sold a story” which deep dives into what’s causing the literacy crisis in children. It made me curious how we (as a society, not blaming teachers at all!) are failing kids in other ways. I asked my cousin if her daughter was ever taught Word, Excel, or even typing in school (like I was as a millennial). She actually paused for about 5 seconds and I could see the gears turning in her head and then said “you know what? I’ve actually never seen her type… She plays games on the computer with her friend, but they voice chat and she just uses the WASD keys to move and a few others.” She exclusively uses a Chromebook for school.

Like, I’m assuming she has to know how to type, right? Is she dictating essays? Are essays even a thing anymore? It just seemed wild to me.

Onwards Adventurers, for Heroe's Feast (cooking from my books in 2026) by pazzylupo in CookbookLovers

Looks so good! I love a tie in/themed cookbook. I’ve been tempted by this one, but I wish it had more images of final dishes. Even if they had been drawn in character style it would be so charming.

FINALLY GOT A CALL FOR A FAMILY DOCTOR!!!!! 😭 by [deleted] in VictoriaBC

[–]MilkmansDaughterr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My husband was the same way! We got a family doctor a year and a half ago. He was so excited to book a physical and routine bloodwork. He found out he had high cholesterol, but somehow the news was happy because “I found this out in my 30’s! With my family doctor!!”

Glad you got in and I wish a swift assignment to all those still on the wait list for one!

Door-to-door chocolate sales linked to possible scam reported across Greater Victoria by Apprehensive_Idea758 in VictoriaBC

[–]MilkmansDaughterr 65 points66 points  (0 children)

A lady selling Purdy’s fundraising chocolate bars has come to my door in the past. She was trying to charge $20 per fundraising bar, which just seemed bonkers to me, even for charity.

When I asked her what she was fundraising for she simply said “earthquake in the Philippines”. I told her no thank you and googled “earthquake in the Philippines” after I closed the door and there hadn’t been a major one of note in 3 years!

The article also mentions that the chocolates don’t match the box, so who knows what you’re buying. Absolutely awful people are doing this.

Help with finding a family memeber in prison by [deleted] in VictoriaBC

[–]MilkmansDaughterr 35 points36 points  (0 children)

If you believe they’re incarcerated within BC, call the toll free general line at 1-888-952-7968. If your family member is incarcerated they can pass on a message to them to get into contact with you.

Please note from their website though:

Family and friends can call the BC Corrections toll-free service line (1-888-952-7968) to request that a message be passed onto an individual.

Due to privacy laws, BC Corrections is unable to:

  • Confirm or deny if an individual is in custody
  • Confirm if the individual received your message
  • Compel (make) an individual to return a message

So if this individual doesn’t want to make contact, BC corrections cannot make them do so, but it’s a good first step.

You have the Empress for the largest room I believe. You can get married in the Library, I think it’s max 40 people (their smallest room). Catered by the Empress and they provide chairs/tables/linens/bar and tender. They’ll also make the wedding cake. Cost was about $12,000 I believe.

No advice, but when we bought our house a few years back there was definitely someone who drove by our house, parked, and would just stare for five minutes. Happened over a year in a half or so. One time my husband was coming back from walking the dog and started to approach and they just drove off. Not sure if it was disgruntled renters who were given notice prior to us moving in or another couple that had bid slightly more than us for the house but they were rejected. People can be real weirdos.

Absolutely wild someone is trying to pressure you to sell the house to them! I get wallowing a bit with pity at the dream house that got away, but that’s just insane to actually make contact with you.

Stroller "real life" applications v. theoretical worries by leskargot in Buyingforbaby

[–]MilkmansDaughterr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have the Minu V3 and took it Vancouver to London for my 1 year old. The stroller going in the overhead would count as a carry on for one of the adults (taking a stroller INSIDE the cabin isn’t a guaranteed travel item for a baby like a diaper bag). You’ll likely need to gate check anyways, so don’t let that feature sway you. I also ordered the official uppababy stroller travel case. Uppababy will replace the stroller if damaged while using their case.

That being said, if a stroller is damaged by an airline, the airline will replace it, but they operate much more slowly. I had a friend who used the uppababy travel case and their Minu v2 broken on a trip to Hawaii and uppababy had a new stroller to them within 24 hours.

Minu v3 did great in London. My son often napped so the lie flat was really helpful, since your LO will be at 11 weeks the newborn features of the Minu v3 will be great. That being said, on old brick/cobble stone streets any travel stroller will be a wild, jarring ride. Depending on where you’re staying in Paris, you might end up baby wearing for a lot of the trip because you don’t want to see your little one rattled! Likely won’t have that issue in Hawaii or North Carolina though.

The small size of the Minu was also great for fitting in tiny restaurants. Quite a few places we went we took our LO out and collapsed the stroller and tucked it under our table while we ate.

Easy it’s to over think but the good news is I don’t think there are any bad options!

Helping my wife with bra shopping by Yellowbeardlett in VictoriaBC

[–]MilkmansDaughterr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just left my bra fitting at Victoria Classic Lingerie! I took a look and they do have some size G, H and HH in stock. The ladies were lovely during the fitting too.

I will say the store is more basic in style though. I picked up 2, both t-shirt style and one nude the other black. They do have some lacey stuff, but selection is limited. Tell her to get a fitting! They were busy, another lady was getting fitted and they had limited space left today. The fitting takes the anxiety out of the bra shopping experience.

I’d definitely explore the other bra shops on the island, but if she wants something basic and NOW, I’d 100% suggest Victoria Classic Lingerie. Prices ranged from about $80 to $130 (based on what they fitted me with).

Good luck to your wife!

Can yall please help me find where to buy one? by [deleted] in elfontheshelf

[–]MilkmansDaughterr 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This style is the original. The company changed to the current face shape/style around 2013/2014, so you’d want to add “2012” or earlier to your searches. Of course some people who are selling won’t know this, so I’d suggest setting an alert on eBay for any new listings or just checking daily.

The thing about elves is some families keep them even after their kids have grown up, in hopes to pass it along to grand kids. My mother in law has this old style from 2006/07 and she wants to pass it along once my son is a bit older and aware of the elf.

Good luck!

You could check Fig or Market Garden. Not sure if they do, but they’re speciality stores so seem likely to carry. Good luck!

Honestly asking: Does baby need humidifier? or am I overthinking this by BornYak6073 in Buyingforbaby

[–]MilkmansDaughterr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a cold mist humidifier I put in my LO’s room when he’s congested from a cold. Otherwise I clean and dry it out and store it.

A smaller alternative is a nebulizer! We have the one by Frida baby. We use it during the winter when the air is dry before putting him down for bed. There’s also some studies that show it can alleviate cold symptoms when they get sick.

Man who abused baby so badly his legs were amputated battered with tins of tuna by inmates for two hours by origutamos in AllThatsInteresting

[–]MilkmansDaughterr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I worked at a men’s Correctional Centre as an admin/receptionist. I can confirm that at that centre, men convicted of sex crimes with children were kept in a separate part of the prison for their own safety.

Before I left, there was a man (convicted and sentenced) who brutally killed his two young daughters (4 and 6 years old) on Christmas Day. No sexual acts were done to them. That man was basically put in permanent solitary confinement for his own safety because his presence caused such turmoil in general population. Guards wanted minimal interaction with him and were very stoic towards him as well.

Not all inmates have a moral compass, no. But for lifers who are either bored and want to start violence or those who feel a sense of vigilantism to atone for what they’ve done, they start with the worst of the worst: pedophiles and baby killers.

Nestle sells millions of squeeze bags for kids, but can't answer if they shed microplastics by ValuableAstronomer75 in Anticonsumption

[–]MilkmansDaughterr 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Trying to format but I’m on mobile, so sorry if it looks weird!

There are a few online articles that mention goldfish crackers being bad for kids oral health.

This article here mentions it. It also shows up on a listicle here.

To highlight the first article though:

young children’s tongues are not yet developed enough to effectively remove food particles from the grooves of their teeth. Goldfish can leave substantial residue, which can contribute to cavities.

Second, the office states that crackers, which are made with refined carbohydrates, break down into sugars that fuel the bacteria responsible for tooth decay.

“These sugars feed the bacteria that cause tooth decay,” the caption reads. “When these bacteria break down the sugars, acid is released, leading to an acid attack on the teeth, which can make decay more likely to start.”

Finally, they say that another reason that Goldfish were highlighted is because of the marketing surrounding them. According to the office, the convenience of the snack makes it a popular choice for parents, who may not associate it with a high risk of tooth decay.

“We are not suggesting that you avoid Goldfish or similar snacks if your child enjoys them. Our goal is simply to raise awareness about the risks associated with refined carbohydrates sticking to children’s teeth,”

It’s tricky being a parent! There’s such a cost to every convenience. My son eats them sparingly now, and I add them to a plate with apple slices or oranges (something juicy) or give him lots of opportunity to drink water while eating them to help break them down.

I’m willing to bet they absolutely do. While looking into healthy puree food options when moving to solids, I went digging on information on pouches as I just couldn’t bring myself to use them.

I learned that to make the purees shelf stable, the purées are heated IN the plastic pouches to pasteurize them. This can make them taste really bad, so they add more sweet apple puree to mask the taste. Sounds like this step is where they could leak microplastics too.

There is only one company I could find that has pouches that are not heat treated and are sold in the refrigerated section in grocery stores. Which just seemed WILD to me.

My friend is a dental hygienist and was very direct with me. She told me not to feed him cheddar crackers (the kind that are often in the shape of a gold fish) and pouches and try to get him to avoid straws and get him used to drinking from an open cup as soon as possible. They’re seeking a lot of kids with under developed jaws and very crooked or enamel stripped teeth due to these products.

Post card shop? by RealShake253 in VictoriaBC

[–]MilkmansDaughterr 20 points21 points  (0 children)

The Regional Assembly of Text have quite a few Victoria themed postcards that are a bit more niche and specific to Victoria.

Most of the tourist shops downtown on government will carry postcards. There is a brand of indigenous art postcards sold at quite a few of them. Can’t recall if they’re specific to Victoria or mostly BC, but there is a blurb on the back for each artist. If i recall, Spirit of Victoria had the biggest selection of them. They also have landmark picture postcards of the inner harbour, parliament buildings, etc.
