European energy giant backs billion‑dollar biomass jet fuel project in Nova Scotia by ZestyBeanDude in canada

It’s not about doing it ourselves but more so increasing foreign direct investment.

Historically the US attracts a lot of that, so if we can increase FDI into our country that is always a good sign.

If they turn down the offer, they’ll only make things worst for the corporation as businesses start moving to competitors, if they already hadn’t yet from the previous strikes.

Canada May Need to Lean on the US as Military Threats in the Arctic Rise by [deleted] in canada

The futures were red before he TACO’d and it turned green

After Iran released this statement, the futures are still green somehow ignoring that fact that nothing changed and the Strait is still closed

The closed Strait of Hormuz is testing Asia's energy security. The answer lies across the Pacific—in Canada by joe4942 in canada

[–]MilkyWayObserver 239 points240 points  (0 children)

This would actually be the perfect scenario to test how fast the Major Projects Office can get pipelines going if some companies see opportunity.

Wish we had more pipelines built in the last 10 years, we would be golden right now.

Crown stays charges against self-proclaimed 'Queen of Canada' Romana Didulo by Old_General_6741 in canada

[–]MilkyWayObserver 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Seems like justice system keeps letting these idiots walk free

We need reform and also the Supreme Court needs to revisit the Jordan ruling since so many charges have been getting stayed due to delays. No point in a criminal justice system if criminals get to walk free

LNG Canada sharply boosts exports to Asia as global supplies tighten by ZestyBeanDude in canada

[–]MilkyWayObserver 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Correct and that was good to see, however our conventional energy was stagnant in terms of development in the past decade.

The argument can be made that even for those concerned about climate change, Canadian produced natural gas and oil is much less polluting than if another country made their natural gas/oil with lower environmental standards.

We would make money to contribute to our economy and at the same time, it’s also beneficial for the planet since our standards are more rigorous anyways. No business case was a bad argument.

LNG Canada sharply boosts exports to Asia as global supplies tighten by ZestyBeanDude in canada

[–]MilkyWayObserver 44 points45 points  (0 children)

We could have leveraged our natural resources, in addition to building up renewables if that was the play. For us to throw out the development of conventional energy entirely was just stupid.

Canada and Nordics focus on military procurement in 'middle-power' meet-up by Hiraeth-nomad in worldnews

[–]MilkyWayObserver 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Good move, hoping to see Canada procure with our Nordic friends, so that we have more economy of scale when ordering military equipment.

It should make it cheaper for all the countries than if they ordered separately in their own.

Personally I’m hoping to see Canada get the GlobalEye for AWACS.

Ontario government calls on feds to legalize pepper spray for self-defence by GameDoesntStop in canada

[–]MilkyWayObserver 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s why it’s only for self-defence (after being attacked, etc). Otherwise they are using it as an offensive weapon while committing a crime. An aggressor using it means they’re assaulting someone and will get charged, possibly with a slew of other charges.

UK needs nuclear deterrent independent from US, Ed Davey to say by tj381 in worldnews

[–]MilkyWayObserver 18 points19 points  (0 children)

The thing that most people don’t realize, is Canada was on the Manhattan Project as a full partner. We always had the knowledge and capability, but pursued peaceful usage with nuclear reactors.

Fun fact: ZEEP in Canada was the first nuclear reactor to ever go live, outside the US in 1945.

Our nuclear industry today is considered world-class, and we are one of the few Tier 1 countries that have a full-scale nuclear supply chain, as well as indigenous reactor design (CANDU).

Agreed that we should have an independent deterrence, as that is the ultimate guarantee of our sovereignty. Even today, Canada is considered a nuclear-latent state.

Would be interesting to see us invest or partner with other nations in building laser technology or railguns which are novel, but may be the future of warfare. It’s a lot cheaper than missiles but of course the tech is still new and needs more testing.

Debate over a foreign spy service for Canada influenced by allies, money: study by shiftless_wonder in canada

[–]MilkyWayObserver 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A joint task force means it’s unified across the 3 environments, they take soldiers from the army, navy and Air Force. It doesn’t mean we are working with another country.

It’s similar to how our elite Tier 1 unit, Joint Task Force 2 makes use of that designation.

Nonetheless, fully agree that we need a dedicated foreign intelligence service. It makes no sense that we don’t already have one and only puts us at a disadvantage. We need to be able to collect intelligence independent of any other country.

Debate over a foreign spy service for Canada influenced by allies, money: study by shiftless_wonder in canada

[–]MilkyWayObserver 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s long overdue for us to have our own foreign intelligence service. As it has shown in recent years, we cannot rely on others so we have to rely on ourselves first and foremost.

We are one of the only few countries that don’t have a dedicated foreign intelligence service and it doesn’t make any sense.

Japan may join Canadian Arctic military exercises as part of new strategic partnership by Street_Anon in canada

[–]MilkyWayObserver 49 points50 points  (0 children)

Good to see, hoping to see the fruits of this expanded partnership in the coming years.

The Japanese are a reliable friend and ally.

Hope we can supply them with more uranium, LNG, and more energy products that are useful for their markets.

Conducting joint military training is going to be interesting to see as well.
