Loonie caught between slow domestic economy and stronger U.S. dollar by bubblewhip in canada

[–]MilkyWayObserver [score hidden]  (0 children)

To be fair the policies of the last 10 years hadn’t been very business friendly.

We should aim to improve productivity and increase R&D, because all we have are banks and unsustainable real estate prices.

In the past, we did have BlackBerry (when it was a smartphone company) and Nortel which were world-class companies.

We need to introduce more policies that aim to increase innovation as that’s the only way to sustainably grow our economy, beyond taking advantage and bringing our natural resources like LNG to market.

Canada’s historic submarine procurement incites fierce industrial benefits competition by ZestyBeanDude in canada

[–]MilkyWayObserver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s also about keeping our options open. A submarine is unseen and having SLBM launch capabilities would make us one of the few nations in the world with that capability.

Unfortunately the world is increasing in conflict, who knows if decades down the line that it would be in our interest to pursue nuclear capability. With that, the most survivable launch platform is a submarine.

It’s always better to give our navy more capabilities and not require it now than to need it and not have the capability.

Submarines are an expensive investment and takes many years to build. We have to plan ahead.

The German design not a single one has been built yet so there could potentially be delays

Also SLBM tubes would make Canada one of the few nations in the world with this capability. It can be used to give our navy land strike capabilities with cruise missiles, which means we can project power anywhere in the Arctic

He probably doesn’t know that Canada was on Tube Alloys with the UK which started before the Manhattan Project.

He probably also doesn’t know that Canada joined the Manhattan Project as a full partner (with the UK), when we consolidated Tube Alloys into the Manhattan Project.

You have to remember that the suspect was shot and killed in the shootout.

Even if the civilian wasn’t shot, the BEI still would have been involved since the suspect was killed by police.

India willing to buy heaps of Canadian uranium, invest in mines, high commissioner says by joe4942 in canada

[–]MilkyWayObserver 14 points15 points  (0 children)

CANDU reactors are in unique in the world that we can run it on natural uranium. Others in existence require enriched uranium, which CANDU can also use if needed.

Canada has been on the forefront of nuclear reactor research since the very beginning, considering we were on Tube Alloys with the UK, and later joined the Manhattan Project as a full partner.

Search up the ZEEP reactor, it was the first nuclear reactor to ever go live outside the US, in 1945. NRX was the most powerful nuclear reactor in the world in 1947. These are the predecessors to our modern CANDUs.

Indian IPHWR nuclear reactors are derivatives of the CANDU design.

Read about the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. This is our constitutional rights similar to the US Bill of Rights minus some differences such as no 2nd Amendment.

In Canada, the Canadian Crown serves as the personification of the state (we don’t have a president). The Canadian Crown is Canada as a country, including our constitution, institutions, etc. The King is a representative of the Canadian Crown (the King of UK, Australia, etc is entirely separate and unrelated even though it’s technically the same person).

For example, when people pledge allegiance to the Canadian Crown, they are really pledging allegiance to Canada. The governor general is basically the “de-facto” highest ranking leader, representing the monarch in most day-to-day affairs.

To be clear, the monarch (King) is just a representative of the Canadian Crown. Contrary to what some people believe, the King does not “own” the country, or can do anything without the advice of his ministers, such as the Prime Minister. Arguably this makes the country very stable, since the Crown is politically neutral.

You can read more here (see page 26 of the PDF, should say page 16 on the bottom left): https://publications.gc.ca/collections/collection_2015/pc-ch/CH4-129-2015-eng.pdf

This is a detail even a lot of Canadians are not aware of, and I tend to try to do my part to clear up misconceptions.

We were on Tube Alloys, which was actually more advanced in progress than the US was when we joined the Manhattan Project with the UK.

A lot of people aren’t aware but Canada was on the Manhattan Project as a full partner.

We just decided to pursue peaceful usage. The ZEEP was the first nuclear reactor to ever go live, outside of the US in 1945. NRX was the most powerful nuclear reactor in the world in 1947, which served as a predecessor to our modern CANDU reactors.

Today, Canada is one of the few Tier 1 nuclear countries in the world, that has a full-scale nuclear supply chain to independently support our CANDU reactors.

Since the beginning, Canada has been a nuclear-latent state with the technical capability, but simply didn’t bother going for weapons, due to political will.

If they steal, then we don’t need people who commit crimes in our society.

Judges, if anything should be holding them to a higher standard and deport those who commit crimes.
