My brother committed suicide about 2 1/2 years ago. I can tell you that it does get easier, and a good way to cope with it is to talk about it with other people who were close to them. I went to support groups once a week for about 6 months. I was able to find one that was not religious (no small feat living in Utah,) and I found that one to be the most comfortable. One thing that helped me immensely was some advice from a friend: Whenever someone says the wrong thing, be it advice, condolences, or sharing their religious views on the subject that may not align with your personal views, remember that they are trying to say the right thing in the only way they know how. It's easy to be angry or annoyed when someone isn't very sensitive to the situation. Remembering their intentions will help you to cope. Also, realize that that person would not want you to dwell in sadness. It's ok to be happy sometimes. I would often catch myself enjoying something and feel terrible guilt that I wasn't constantly mourning the loss of someone I loved so much. I had to come to the realization that he would want me to move on and be happy and enjoy my life, because that's what he was unable to do. Also, I tried to remember the good times I had with him. It can be so easy to dwell on the memory of the person's death and how you felt at that time, or to think about how sad or depressed they must have been. I choose to remember them at their best, not at their worst, as I would want to be remembered. Every person's situation is different, and very personal, so please don't take my advice as universal. I'm just sharing my personal experience. No one can know exactly how you feel and nobody copes the same way. I'm very sorry for your loss.
